SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 1873.
Miscellaneous.
It is probable that another United States census will be taken in 1875, in time for the centennial celebration.
The Postmaster of El Dorado, Arkansas, has been charged with the embezzlement of public funds.
A Minnesota Teuton has won fame and $5 by drinking ten glasses of lager beer in two minutes and a half.
It is said that a new penal code, by which the death penalty is abolished, will soon be introduced by the Italian Government.
A Negro woman in Charleston, Indiana, whose husband was hung by a mob two years ago, has begun a lawsuit against his murderers.
There have been $1,309 railroad accidents in this country within the past twelve months, resulting in 341 deaths, and 1,410 injuries.
A man who thinks Western railroad tariffs exorbitant, recently rode from Chicago to Laporte; Indiana, a distance of about 100 miles, roosting under a car.
The net debt of the new city of Boston will be about $30,000,000 when consolidation takes place.
Nearly $200,000 rent is annually paid by the National Government for private buildings, which are used for offices in Washington.

A movement is on foot in Boston, to procure the rescinding of the resolutions censuring Senator Sumner's action on the battle flag question.
New York Police contributed $1,000 to the Memphis Police, and at nine polling places, $4,400 was deposited for the suffering city.
The Courts of Illinois are reported to have already over 8,000 divorce cases on their dockets, with accessions of new applications at the rate of 29,000 per annum.
The Postmaster-General has finished his annual report. He renews his recommendations for a Postal Telegraph and Post Office Savings Bank.
A New Orleans paper says: "Some Chinamen last winter rented 160 acres of land a short distance from the city, and now they are gathering a splendid rice crop. They used a syphon to flood their fields from the river."
The Herald says: "Jute seed is now being gratuitously distributed by the Farmer's Jute Manufacturing Company. of San Francisco. We hope some of our Los Angeles farmers will procure some of the seed, and test the adaptability of our soil to its culture.
A new class of claims will come before Congress this winter. During the rebellion in 1863, General Burnside impressed in Kentucky about 8,000 slaves to work on military roads, etc. Some of the owners were compensated at the time of impressment, and now the remainder, or a large number of them, are pressing their claims upon the Government. It is estimated that they amount to something over $2,000,000.
We take the following from a Chicago dispatch: The Farmers and Anti-Monopolists have opposed both the old parties in the late campaign. In this respect their victory has been almost unparalleled. They have carried forty-nine counties against the Democrats or the Republican party, which ever happened to be the stronger in the particular county of contest; while the Republican and Democratic parties
We take the following from a Chicago dispatch: The Farmers and Anti-Monopolists have opposed both the old parties in the late campaign. In this respect their victory has been almost unparalleled. They have carried forty-nine counties against the Democrats or the Republican party, which ever happened to be the stronger in the particular county of contest; while the Republican and Democratic parties together have only carried thirty-six counties. A year ago, every county in the State was in the possession of one or the other of the old parties.
A dispatch from New York says that about 5,000 persons visited the Navy Yard on last Saturday, many of them being in search of work. Not taking into account those who went there for purely personal motives, the officers of the Yard say that at no time since the war has the general public evinced such interest in the affairs of the Yard. No secret is made of the fact, that orders have been received from Washington to prepare all available vessels at the Yard for active service as soon as possible, and well informed parties say that orders have been issued to prepare for sea at once every suitable vessel in the Navy.
Philadelphia, Nov. 16.—This afternoon there was a large mass meeting of workingmen and women held in the Academy building, to discuss the situation. The City Council was denounced for not providing work for the destitute, and a committee appointed to meet the council committee to-morrow. There are about 40,000 people out of employment here. Seven hundred men are at work to-day on the Monitor, Manhattan and Ajax and Canadaqua. The Manhattan will go into commission to-morrow. The Pinta, a large tug, is being made ready as a dispatch boat between Key West and Havana to New York.
