It is estimated that the gross receipts of the Pennsylvania Railroad for this year will exceed $25,000,000.
Gratz Brown is a candidate for the Missouri Legislature, and would not object to becoming a U.S. Senator from that State.
The English Government has sent an attorney to this country to search the records of the Port Collectors' offices for evidence in the Tichelborne case.
A Maine boy of eleven, who killed a girl by pointing a gun at her, "in sport," has been found guilty of manslaughter, and will be sent to the Reform School.
The estimates of the various Federal departments in the reports about to be made to Congress will exceed those of last year by about 5 per cent.
Little Nell, the "California Diamond," has fallen heir to an estate which gives her an income of $5,000 during her minority and $200,000 when she becomes of age.
An Iowa city man built himself a $10,000 barn, and sat down in it to have a smoke and contemplate the structure. He liked it exceeding well, and will at once build another on the same site, having obtained his insurance.
A cabbage weighing ten and one-half pounds, has been presented to the editor of the Los Angeles Express by T. Jeff White Esq. It was raised on his place near the Mission of San Gabriel, and carries the above weight divested of the large outside leaves.
The Reporter remarks: Napa farmers seem to be determined to exterminate the squirrels. A petition has been numerously signed to raise the price paid for scalps from five to ten cents per scalp, as the former price did not seem to be sufficient inducement for their slaughter, which is proved by the fact that the fund for their destruction has suffered but a small reduction, and there being now on hand about $2,075 37 in the hands of the County Treasurer.
The Chico Enterprise, of November 1st, describes the latest California invention—a portable boarding house, capable of accommodating sixteen hands. The house is upon wheels, and is 22 by 11 feet. The dining table is lowered and raised from the ceiling, and the bunks fold up on the sides, leaving, in the daytime, the main apartment all clear.
The Chico Enterprise, of November 1st, describes the latest California invention—a portable boarding house, capable of accommodating sixteen hands. The house is upon wheels, and is 22 by 11 feet. The dining table is lowered and raised from the ceiling, and the bunks fold up on the sides, leaving in the daytime, the main apartment all clear. The kitchen occupies about eight feet space in the rear, and is ample for all culinary purposes. Ventilation is secured from an upper-deck arrangement about twenty inches high above the roof, with transom lights. Altogether, the thing is a complete novelty and convenience, and is the brain work of Abram Bidwell, the superintendent of the Bidwell ranch. The saving of time, where a gang of sixteen men are employed, at a distance of four to six miles is nearly one third on the whole, especially in the Winter, when the days are short.
A series of caricatures now popular in Vienna gives the Austrian impression of the besetting sins of the great powers. Prussia, a hungry dame resting upon a sword, represents Pride. England is a scrawny female seated on a cotton bale, and is called Avarice. Russia goes skating and scowling by under the name of Envy. Turkey lols on a sofa, a fat odalisque, as Luxury. France, with a man's hat in one hand and a glass of champagne in the other, dances a decollete cancan, and is called Immodesty. Spain is a wild Petrolouse, and represents Anger. Scotland is a bonnie lassie dropping to sleep on a mountain side, as Laxiness. But America has an eighth capital sin invented to characterize her. She sits on a pile of Pub. Does., scribbling furiously; the iniquity she represents bears the uncanny name of Zeitungschrelberel (Newspaper Scribbling.)
