Election is over—the railroads run.
Twenty-five trains where they used have one;
In the ditch by the track, there he is casually rolled;
A ragged old Granger, stark and cold.
And a fat office-holder, with clutch and grin,

What Granges Are.
The Rural World gives the most correct conception of a Grange and its objects. It says:
A Grange is an organization of farmers. It has for its object in provement. It is designed to elevate and eplighten the farmer. Would better quality him for his God-given profession. It aims to bring about those objects by association. It unites those of the same calling in one grand brotherhood for protection of all. It establishes in every neighborhood a lecture room—which is the Grange itself in which the most important truth are unfolded. It disseminates valuable information, by which all are benefitted. It collects as well disseminates it receives knowledge as well as dispenses it. It is an intellectual institution. It calls for exercise of the mind. It brings mind in contact with mind, and by the contact, other minds are illuminated by the friction. It draws on latent talent. It makes active tangible what has been before done and unseen. It shows the importance of cultivating brains well as soil. It demonstrates that fact that as rich harvests are developed by brain culture as soil culture—that a great crop of weeds has grown up and smothered out useful plants, by the neglect of brain culture. The Grange is social institution. It makes a gracious sister and brotherhood. It units by strong ties, those that have before been strangers. It makes

It demonstrates the fact that as rich harvests are developed by brain culture as soil culture —that a great crop of weeds has grown up and smothered out the useful plants, by the neglect of brain culture. The Grange is a social institution. It makes a grand sister and brotherhood. It unites by strong ties, those that have before been strangers. It makes each feel an interest in all, and all each. It heals up the wounds of the unfortunate. It administers comfort to the sick, and alleviates the sufferings of the distressed. It a husband to the widow and a father to the fatherless. It makes every neighborhood one kind, affectionate family. It is a financial institution. It seeks to obtain for its members the highest price for their products. It looks to the good of all. It learns how and when the best prices can be obtained. It cuts the Gordini knot which has bound the farmer—the middleman, who has absorbed the chief profits of his labor. throws its protecting arms over all around all, and would make them more independent.
To those who think the farmers complaints are unjustified, the San Jose Mercury recommends a comparison of prices now and at the same time last year. Wheat is no bringing 12s 6d and 12s 9d in Lincoln; which is exactly the quotation of the same day last season. Wheat in San Francisco is selling for $2 30; one year ago $1 65 was that was offered; comment necessary.

OLD CHANGER.
All the mills of Lowell have decided to run on three-fourths time till business is better.
Potato blight has stricken the potato crops of Ireland and the east of England, which has ruined them, and a potato famine is threatened.
J. W. Patton, a clerk in the San Francisco postoffice, a cousin of Sargent, and R. D. Herrick, another clerk, have been arrested for stealing money from the postoffice.
Hon. R. M. Widney has petitioned the Board of Common Council of Los Angeles, for a franchise to construct a street railroad in that city.
John Meredith Read, Consul-General at Paris, has been promoted to the position of Minister Resident at Greece, vice John M. Francis, resigned.
A. T. A. Torbet, Consul-General at Havana, has been promoted to Read's place at Paris. Henry C. Hall is appointed to the Consulship at Havana.

At a meeting of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the subject of mowing off the leaves of strawberries was discussed. It was generally agreed that the effect was to produce a more vigorous and healthy foliage, with increased strength in the flower buds and roots.
The reporter of a Nashville paper who, mentioning a young lady's disease, touchingly alluded to her as "one of the brightest jewels that ever glittered in the diadem of an earthly home; one of the purest stars that ever gleamed upon the frontlet of our social sky; one of the sweetest flowers that ever bloomed in the garden of earliest association," has had his salary raised to four dollars a month, half cash and the balance in cordwood.
A good advertisement says the Boston Journal is the best of all possible salesmen. It is a salesman who never sleeps and is never weary; who goes after business early and late; who accents the merchant in his shop, the sobolar in his study, the lawyer in his office, the lady at the breakfast table: who can be in a thousand places at once, and speak to a thousand people every morning and evening, saying to each one the best thing in the best manner.
A rather singular bet was made a few days ago at the South Fork of Jackson creek. A young woman had been engaged for several months to a young man, and had received a ring from him. Having heard that he had said he intended to marry her out of spite only, she offered to return his ring, and wished to break off the engagement. He denied having said what she alleged against him, but she backed up her assertion by offering to bet $200 that such was the case. The bet was accepted and the money deposited. She failed to prove her assertion and he consequently pocketed the stakes, and broke off the engagement.

The San Jose Mercury thinks that a first-class missionary could find steady employment and good wages among the school teachers of Monterey county, judging from the following from the Hollister Enterprise: "During the session of the Teachers' Institute, Henry Houghton had on exhibition in the hall, a large number of chromosomes, among which was a very impressive one of The Savior, crowned with the cruel wreath of thorns, and the blood drops trickling down the upturned face. One of the teachers from the lower end of the county, when he saw it, wanted to know 'who in the blazes is that fellow crying?'
About five miles from Saucelito,
in the direction of San Rafael, on
the North Pacific coast line, the Pacific Bridge Company is building for the Railroad Company a long and lofty piece of trestle work over a deep gulch. There are in this trestle thirty lengths or benches, and it is three stories or sixty feet high. It had been blowing a norther during the night, and the wind was still high on Saturday morning. The carpenters, some fifteen in number, were at work, the job being almost finished. About 9 o'clock, eighteen benches fell with a tremendous crash, and four men came to the ground with heavy timber. There names were John Fagan, R. Duncan, Joseph Dunn, and a man named Andrews, a Swede, all residents of San Francisco. They were all seriously injured.
