Appreciation of Weekly Newspapers.
Notwithstanding the improvements in locomotion and the velocity of the telegraph, it is doubtful if men's brains work faster, or their thoughts flow with greater freedom than they did a thousand years ago. Memory has no greater powers now, than then, and the food of the mind can only be eaten and digested after the fashion of men, and not by steam or lightning. These thoughts are engendered by the obvious wear, tear and mental suffering embraced in the daily newspaper business, both by editors and readers; and a consideration of the sensational slops which are constantly stewed up, even manufactured to order, to fill the columns and excite in any manner, the interest of the reader. The hastily prepared articles and items of the dailies are necessarily light reading, and the surfeit is only swallowed up by the public with large quantities of sensational sauce.
The weekly is the welcome guest at the fireside and home circle. It is carefully prepared, and the effects of its contents upon the public weighed with much care in advance of its issue. Even the monthly is hailed at the expiration of each interval, as the appearance of an old friend that has been missed; and all its contents, advertisements included, are perused with care and interest. Many of the weeklies and monthlies of the Pacific coast are beginning to enjoy an enviable literary reputation, containing as they do, leading articles prepared with a strict regard for truth, and on which

Many of the weeklies and monthlies of the Pacific coast are beginning to enjoy an enviable literary reputation, containing as they do, leading articles prepared with a strict regard for truth, and on which the reader can depend for reliability.
We do not wish to appear especially harsh in this view of the dailies; a few good ones in the larger cities, edited by competent and conscientious men, are useful; but as a mania, we deprecate the daily publication business, and regard it as an unhealthy sign, and an instrument which in its wild competition with itself for sensation, tends to lower the standard of public morals, emasculate thought, foster and encourage partial views, hasty and immature judgments, and a general slip-shodiness of illogical deductions by the great mass of readers.—Real Estate Reporter.
GLEANINGS.
Both the California sugaries — that at Sacramento and that at Alvarado — are working hard upon their beets, and are turning out large quantities of excellent sugar. The Sacramento establishment is so well pleased with this year's work, that it is preparing to greatly increase its beet growing acres. And the success of these enterprises should stir other localities to activity in this sugar business. It will pay, and there is plenty of room in California for fifty more.
A Hungarian, seeing his wife dying of an accidental dose of corrosive sublimate, treated her with killing kindness and shot her dead rather than see her suffer.
The name of Theodore Tilton has been stricken from the rolls of Plymouth Church. Beecher protested against the action.
A patient who has been for thirty years under treatment in the Brattleboro, Vt., Insane Asylum, has just been discharged cured, at the age of sixty-four.
It is considered certain that a change will soon be made in the California Surveyor Generalship. It is believed that Senator Sargent will name Von Schmidt as Hardenberg's successor.
It is a painful sight, says the Danbury News, to see an old man, seventy-five years old.

It is a painful sight, says the Danbury News, to see an old man, seventy years of age, trying to sap the stamp from a second-hand postal card.
A young lady in Niagara county New York, had a bumblebee removed from her ear the other day, the insect having dashed in there. Now figure on the size of her ears.
William Baxter, of Newark, has been awarded the $100,000 prize of forered by the State of New York, for the best steam canal boat. On the trial trip of Mr. Baxter's boat, only fourteen pounds of coal per mile were consumed.
A Bennington (Vt.) boy is bowed down beneath the weight of the name of Burnside Butler Grant Martin Palmer Hooker Shade. That boy is bound to die young.
The political relations existing between the French and Italian Governments are assuming an unpleasant and hostile character, and a rupture is believed to be impending. The Duo de Broglie, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, has instructed the French Ambassador to prolong his absence from Rome for the present.
Within the past three months a wine manufactory has been established at Healdsburg, a short distance from the railroad depot. The proprietors are Chambaud & Co., experienced French wine-makers. They have not only erected their own buildings, but constructed the winery press themselves.
