One dreary morning when I rose, The sky was overcast, And sharply blew the chilling wind— The drops were falling fast. When from the window I looked out: No pleasant thing was seen, For not a flower showed its head, Nor spear of tender green. The branches of the leafless trees Swayed slowly to and fro, Above, no sun to greet the eye, No pleasant sounds below. Displeased to look, I turned away. Ah! what can living thing Enjoy abroad, in air or sky, This dreary day of Spring? Thus said I sadly to myself, When hark! a cheery note, Like stream of liquid sunshine, burst From out a Robin's throat. The rain-drops beat upon his head, The cold wind shook the tree; He had no fire wherewith to warm, No home nor breakfast he. THE PATRONS OF HUSBANDRY. The California State Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry have just concluded their first annual meeting at San Jose, which appears to have been a prolonged, laborious and very successful session. The representation was full from all the Granges as well as from all parts of the State. The Mercury speaks in the highest terms of the farmers composing the State Grange, and encouragingly of its objects. It says the gathering of farmers was surprising, not so much from their numbers as their intelligence. In everything they did, they displayed the soundest sense, and a knowledge of the "way out of the woods" that was entirely unlooked for. The Mercury adds: "Our farmers read, study and ponder, and in their straight-forward way go to the bottom of every matter. They know their comparative numerical strength and commercial importance and will demand for themselves the consideration to which they are entitled, and which they have the Displeased to look, I turned away, Ah! what can living thing Enjoy abroad, in air or sky, This dreary day of Spring? Thus said I sadly to myself, When hark! a cheery note, Like stream of liquid sunshine, burst From out a Robin's throat. The rain-drops beat upon his head, The cold wind shook the tree; He had no fire wherewith to warm, No home nor breakfast he. But Robin heeded not the storm, So glad was he to live; His happy song still rippled on, The sweetest he could give. Dear little bird! I inly said, His song reproaches me For all the blessings I receive, Why not so glad as he? Then, children, when the world goes wrong, If tempted to complain, Just call to mind the cheerful song Of Robin in the rain. Wine and Brandy Association. At the annual meeting of this Association held at Sacramento some time since, there was a fair attendance. From the President's address we learn that there will be produced this year from twelve to fifteen millions of gallons of wine, of the value of $3,500,000; besides, about two million of pounds of grapes for table use, worth about $250,000; and one-quarter of a million pounds of raisins. There is not within this State to exceed forty thousand acres planted to vines. Of hill and mountain land alone, which is eminently susceptible to the cultivation of vines, there are more than eight millions of acres. With reasonable cultivation, and without diminishing any of the other productions of the State, we have acres enough to produce annually from the vine more than $2,000,000, and these lands are mostly unsuitable for any other production as a staple. President Blanchard deems favorable legislation necessary to sustain wine making, as will appear from the following extract from his address: "Our highest prosperity will never be reached until the occupation of these lands is made an element of legislation; until the subject shall have encouragement and aid. Commerce is not to be forgotten; manufactures should not be overlooked; neither should this great and most natural resource of the State—vine-growing—be made the subject of legislative oppression." We are of everything they did, they displayed the soundest sense, and a knowledge of the "way out of the woods" that was entirely unlooked for. The Mercury adds: "Our farmers read, study and ponder, and in their straight-forward way, go to the bottom of every matter. They know their comparative numerical strength and commercial importance and will demand for themselves the consideration to which they are entitled, and which they have the means to enforce. They hold the daily bread of the nation and they know it. They hold a majority of the votes of the Union and they know this, too. With these two weapons in their hands, they can dictate their own commercial and political terms." It is said that the Grange is not a political organization. We suppose that this means that it is not "Republican" or "Democratic." But we have evidence, in the late Eastern elections, that the members of the Granges go to the polls and vote as they deem best for the interests they labor to achieve by their organization. Their leaders, however, are not politicians in the general sense. They inaugurated their organization, purely with a view to self-protection, and not as an organization to make war upon either of the present political parties, with a view to their dismemberment and its own political supremacy. Two Crops From One Sowing. Messrs. Poorman & Green, of this city, one year ago this last spring, rented to the Beet Sugar Company, a part of their farm, lying near the sugar factory. The land rented was for planting with beets, and by contract, the rentors plowed the same about eleven inches deep. In consequence of late planting, the crop of beets was not large. Last fall, the same land was sown by Messrs. Poorman & Green, to wheat, and the result was a very large growth of straw, and a yield of thirty-three and a third bushels of excellent wheat to the acre. The wheat field contained sixty-five acres, and being headed, there was left on the heaviest portion of it, thirty acres of high and heavy stubble, which the owners wished in some way to turn to account, and at the same time, get it off the ground, so as to facilitate the next plowing. They offered to sell it, but could get offered only $100 for the same. Rather than sell at that price, they put a reaper to work, and mowed thirty ing, as will appear from the following extract from his address: "Our highest prosperity will never be reached until the occupation of these lands is made an element of legislation; until the subject shall have encouragement and aid. Commerce is not to be forgotten; manufactures should not be overlooked, nor our mining interests neglected; neither should this great and most natural resource of the State—vine-growing—be made the subject of legislative oppression." We are of the opinion that wine and brandy making in this country will never prosper through legislation, but that if we make good wines and brandies they will sell, and viniculture will become self-sustaining. — Marysville Appeal. Mutual Aid Association. On Friday, October 24th., there was incorporated in this city, the Southern California Mutual Aid Association, with the following list of Trustees: J. Q. A. Stanley, Thomast A. Garey and L. M. Holt, of Los Angeles; Geo. C. Gibbs, of San Gabriel Mission; J. H. Gray, of El Monte; J. E. McComas and J. A. Walker, of Compton; C. Gridley and Richard Melrose, of Anaheim; S. L. Bequette, of Los Nietos; and E. G. Brown, of Riverside. The objects of the Association are to render pecuniary aid to the families of deceased members; said families will be entitled to as many dollars as there are members in the Association at the time of the member's death. Each member must pay annually into the Company, from $3 to $10, and an assessment of one dollar whenever a member dies. The details of this system will be given to the public as soon as the Company is fully in working order, which will be in about three weeks hence. Similar Associations are successful operation in various parts of the State, and especially in Petaluma and San Francisco. Mr. Holt goes above by the next steamer for his family, and on his return, the Company's office will be opened in this city. — Los Angeles Star. De Chambord issues a circular saying that if made King of France he will not attempt to disturb the present temporal power of the Pope, or re-establish the dethroned dynasties of Spain and Italy. Ezra Carr, a son of Prof Carr, of the State University, was killed at Alameda while coupling two cars on the Central Pacific Railroad.
