SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25, 1873.
The dedication.
The following extracts, we take from a letter written by Mr. John Hunter of Anaheim, to the Peterborough Examiner, a Canadian paper:
ANAHEIM, August 28th., 1873.
In addressing you this time, I propose to give you an account of the dedication of the Presbyterian Church here, which took place on the 17th. of this month. I believe in some of my letters, I mentioned that the few members here—somewhat less than thirty—purposed to erect a house of worship for the use of the congregation, and I think I said that I did not know where the money would come from. We commenced, however, in earnest and had a subscription list passed round, and being so well satisfied with the result of the canvass, we thought we were justified in proceeding with the work.
The building is of frame, and was built on the plan and specifications kindly donated by an architect in San Francisco, to one of the Elders of the congregation. The size is somewhere about 30x50 feet; it sits well up from the ground and looks well, being painted white outside. Inside, the walls are plastered, and the wood work varnished, as well as the seats, so that altogether every part looks well. There is a small gallery which will hold about fifty people that is also well furnished.
San Francisco, to one of the Elders of the congregation. The size is somewhere about 30x50 feet; it site well up from the ground and looks well, being painted white outside. Inside, the walls are plastered, and the wood work varnished, as well as the seats, so that altogether every part looks well. There is a small gallery which will hold about fifty people, that is also well finished. On the passages leading from the doors to the pulpit, matting has been placed, and on the pulpit floor a carpet of a very pretty pattern. On the top of the building stands a dome, somewhat resembling the dome on some of the public buildings in Canada. It certainly gives the building a very chaste appearance, yet to my mind, a Presbyterian steepele, with its tall vane pointing upwards, would have been more becoming, pointing as it would towards the Heavenly land, and warning the worshippers as they enter the gates, to lift their thoughts from below and follow the line indicated by the silent monitor. The Building Committee, however, followed the plan.
On the day of opening, the house, which is seated for about 500 people, was crowded to the door. Punctually at eleven o'clock, the choir commenced and sung a short voluntary, after which the services were proceeded with. * * * The report of the Trustees of the Church was then read, which showed that the site of the building cost $200; the building, $8,307.72. There was collected by subscription, $2,450.28, and the sum of about $600, receivable from the Church Execution Fund. * * * In order to gather the amount still wanting, being over $250, a collection was taken up, and in a little while the money was all raised except $10. On hearing this stated aloud in the church, one of the elders was seen making his way towards the altar with the money, when the attention was arrested by one individual calling out, "here it is for you," thus leaving the church
In order to gather the amount still wanting, being over $250, a collection was taken up, and in a little while the money was all raised except $10. On hearing this stated aloud in the church, one of the elders was seen making his way towards the altar with the money, when the attention was arrested by one individual calling out, "here it is for you," thus leaving the church $10 in advance of the debt.
Now a word about the subscriptions received. In several instances, carpenters gave $50, some $100, and some more, some less. Then we received from a gentleman in New York, $200 as a present. From ladies in San Francisco and Illinois, who were known to some of the members, we received quite a sum. Again we have the gratifying intelligence from two ladies of the State of New Jersey, that they present us with a handsome pulpit Bible and Hymn Book. Truly our hearts overflow with gratitude to all, who by their donations and services have assisted us to rear a Temple to the name of the King of Kings. Starting as we did, with a little over twenty members of the church around us, it appears to me truly a great work, and we are under many obligations to two lady members, who manifested such interest in the collection fund for the completion of such a building.
One day last week, a very careless man went to the cellar and stuck the candle in what he supposed was a key of black sand. He sat near it drinking wine until the candle burned low, nearer and nearer it got to the black sand; nearer and nearer, until the blaze reached the black sand—and as it was nothing else but black sand, nothing happened.
