You must determine for yourself whether Kansas or Texas or Colorado or the Pacific Coast suits best your health, your purse and your taste. But, negatively, I would earnestly enjoin you not to emigrate into an unhealthy locality on any terms. No matter how tall the corn, how big the squashes, or how cheap the land, have nothing to do with a fever and ague township; no, not though you could own the whole swamp. Look around you, inquire, put a notice in the papers, and if you cannot bear of a Christian neighborhood near at hand and do not feel competent to organize a colony yourself, write to L.P. Webber, Anaheim, California, who will mail you the documents of the Westminster Colony of Presbyterians, eight miles from the village, and about twelve miles from Wilmington, where the San Francisco and San Diego steamers make regular landings every ten days. This colony is a good illustration of the advantages of Presbyterianism in an agricultural point of view. I am not aware that the Westminster divines, or Dr. Hodge, have treated largely of the Presbyterian peach business, or of the relation of Calvinism to Artesian wells, therefore, as I have stumbled across some facts indicative of such relations, I take the liberty of alleging a natural affinity between orthodox Presbyterianism and successful colonization. By colonization I mean organized emigration. Rev. L.P. Webber, well known —The wild man of the (Ky.) Caucasian thus an defeat of Butler in the sett State Convention roaring, rearing, rampaging—the foaming, frothing fiendish Beast—the brawling, blustering, Beast—the bellowing, brimstone-belching Lowell was defeated last in the Nasty-Nasty-Nasty State Thieves' Own County Governor! Report of Special Committee on Water to the Farmers' Club of San Gabriel Valley. How to increase water supply of Los Angeles county for agricultural purposes is a question of prominent importance. In considering it the following inquiries arise: First, can such increase be secured? Second, will the expected benefits justify the expense? Third, how can it be accomplished? Fourth, by what agency can it be effected? Fifth, what preliminary steps are necessary to the undertaking? To the first inquiry it is safe to reply, that the amount of water for irrigation in this county can be increased almost indefinitely. In reference to the second inquiry, "Will it pay?" Experience under various systems, in other countries, elsewhere in the United States, justifies the belief that the direct benefits as well as enhanced values would probably be greater here, especially if a general system of irrigation be adopted. Irrigable land in the San Antonio valley, Texas, is worth from $200 to $300 per acre. The congregation unites with the Presbyterians around Anaheim in reporting the gospel, and in building a church there. I had the pleasure of uniting with six Presbyterian and an Episcopal clergyman in the dedication of this interesting holding after the trustees had read statement that the cost of the office was three thousand three hundred dollars, and the assets were thousand dollars, whereupon people promptly raised the balance, and dedicated the church free debt. They like to do things so California, and feel good after it. Now," said one of the workingies, "we must go for raising our pastor's salary next." Progress is in motto. There are three Presbyterian ministers now resident in Colony, and more coming, invading some of them, but gaining health by horticulture. We have not left myself room to talk about the tall corn and big pumpkins, and perhaps it is best so, my readers might hardly like to believe me were I to say that I assured and helped to eat a hermelon forty-eight and one-half inches in circumference one way. By thirty-eight and three fourths. But thousands of lime, lemon, orange, spin vines, fig, olives, walnut and wood trees are the ambition of the poets, and rightly so. With the name of Syria, and a richer soil, that this colony needs is water be an oriental garden, and the water is easily reached at from reply, that the amount of water for irrigation in this county can be increased almost indefinitely. In reference to the second inquiry, "Will it pay?" Experience under various systems, in other countries, elsewhere in the United States, justifies the belief that the direct benefits as well as enhanced values would probably be greater here, especially if a general system of irrigation be adopted. Irrigable land in the San Antonio valley, Texas, is worth from $200 to $300 per acre, while land of equal fertility and not more than a stone's throw from the former, is worth only $5 per acre. In parts of Europe, a large portion of the land commanded by irrigating systems is worth from $1,000 to $2,000 per acre, while the non-irrigable, adjacent, is worth only $100 to $200 per acre. The bulk of the non-irrigable lands of Los Angeles county have merely a nominal value. Were they subject to a proper system of irrigation, they would be worth from $25 to $100 per acre; and these figures consequent upon the influx of an intelligent and thrifty rural population will increase yearly. In proportion to the water increase will be the increase of the population. So that if the former increase should be tanfold, one would not be chimerical if he should expect a corresponding addition to our population. The third is the main question to be answered. We know of no system of irrigation which would meet the necessities of Los Angeles and other counties similarly situated. The systems in use elsewhere generally apply to some failing streams fed by perpetual snows, while our streamlets are few and ever failing, especially when most wanted. To increase the water supply of this vicinity, we must resort to artesian wells or to pumps, or if the water must be secured from the rivers during the wet and held in reserve for the dry season, the latter way being reliable, comparatively cheap and having every capacity for an abundant water supply, will be preferred. Our mountain water sheds are unlimited, and in many of the canions which penetrate the mountain ranges for miles may be found extensive basins with narrow outlets formed by the contraction of the canons and covered by extending water sheds. These narrow outlets may be easily dammed, for material, timber and stone is ample and on the spot. The water collected in these basins will measurably be protected from evaporation by the surrounding The wild man of the Lexington Bay.) Caucasian thus announces the treat of Butler in the Massachusetts State Convention: "Theearing, rearing, rampagerous Beast the foaming, frothing, ferocious. Andish Beast — the blathering, sawling, blustering, blackguard Beast—the bellowing, blear-eyed, limestone-belching Behemoth of well was defeated last Wednesday at the Nasty-Nasty-Nastychusette State Thieves' Own Convention for Governor. These narrow outlets may be easily dammed, for material, timber and stone is ample and on the spot. The water collected in these basins will measurably be protected from evaporation by the surrounding mountains. Many deep ravines along our foot hills being similarly constructed, may also be used as reservoirs. In other localities where natural reservoirs do not exist, reservoirs can be constructed. The waters of the canions may be led to the reservoirs by canals and used from when required. An individual case is cited to show the efficacy of reservoirs. A Mr. Kronig, who resides near Fort Union, concluded that the rainfall along the base of the mountains could be made to irrigate extensive tracts. He made, in the open plain, two or three lakes or reservoirs, from which he now irrigates 2,500 acres of land. As a result, Mr. Kronig has a model farm with groves and avenues of thrifty trees, where but a few years since was a sterile plain. It individual effort can effect so much, what may not be expected from associated enterprise? In Nevada county, large reservoirs store the winter's water, to be used in mining in summer. The dam of the Eureka Lake Company is 62 feet high and 270 feet long, with a surface spread of over 330 acres. Its reservoir has a capacity of 920,000 cubic feet. The Bowman dam, belonging to the North Bloomfield Grand M. Co., is 72 feet high and 810 feet long; the reservoir created by it covers 390 acres. It contains 448,000,000 cubic feet; still it is proposed to double this capacity. Other reservoirs of the mag-
