Experience under various systems, in other countries, elsewhere in the United States, justifies the belief that the direct benefits as well as enhanced values would probably be greater here, especially if a general system of irrigation be adopted. Irrigable land in the San Antonio valley, Texas, is worth from $200 to $300 per acre, while land of equal fertility and not more than a stone's throw from the former, is worth only $5 per acre. In parts of Europe, a large portion of the land commanded by irrigating systems is worth from $1,000 to $2,000 per acre, while the non-irrigable, adjacent, is worth only $100 to $200 per acre. The bulk of the non-irrigable lands of Los Angeles county have merely a nominal value. Were they subject to a proper system of irrigation, they would be worth from $25 to $100 per acre; and these figures consequent upon the influx of an intelligent and thrifty rural population will increase yearly. In proportion to the water increase will be the increase of the population. So that if the former increase should be tanfold, one would not be chimerical if he should expect a corresponding addition to our population. The third is the main question to be answered. We know of no system of irrigation which would meet the necessities of Los Angeles and other counties similarly situated. The systems in use elsewhere generally apply to some failing streams fed by perpetual snows, while our streamlets are few and ever failing, especially when most wanted. To increase the water supply of this vicinity, we must resort to artesian wells or to pumps, or if the water must be secured from the rivers during the wet and held in reserve for the dry season, the latter way being reliable, comparatively cheap and having every capacity for an abundant water supply, will be preferred. Our mountain water sheds are unlimited, and in many of the canions which penetrate the mountain ranges for miles may be found extensive basins with narrow outlets formed by the contraction of the canons and covered by extending water sheds. These narrow outlets may be easily dammed, for material, timber and stone is ample and on the spot. As a result, Mr. Kronig has a model farm with groves and avenues of thrifty trees, where but a few years since was a sterile plain. It individual effort can effect so much, what may not be expected from associated enterprise? In Nevada county, large reservoirs store the winter's water, to be used in mining in summer. The dam of the Eureka Lake Company is 62 feet high and 270 feet long, with a surface spread of over 330 acres. Its reservoir has a capacity of 920,000 cubic feet. The Bowman dam, belonging to the North Bloomfield Grand M. Co., is 72 feet high and 810 feet long; the reservoir created by it covers 390 acres.
