Southern California
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11, 1873.
twelve miles below, is the colony of Riverside, founded by Judge North. Following the coast to San Diego we pass through the valleys of San Juan Capistrano, and San Louis Rey containing in the aggregate some thousands of acres of good land with the all important advantage of plenty water for irrigation. There is also plenty of good soil in the county of San Diego, but the rain fall is small, and there are no facilities for irrigation; until that want is supplied, the country can never be thickly settled. It is much to be regretted, that such a fine harbor should be surrounded by a country that is valueless for want of water.
Outside of the lands I have enumerated, there is nothing in the southern coast counties worthy of the name of agricultural lands. Much of those I have described are unequalled, and all of them are good; and I would advise the intending purchaser to visit all the described places before purchasing, and during his investigations, to keep constantly before his mind this fact, that there is no unproductive land in Southern California if it can be irrigated; and also to remember this advice, not to be persuaded into buying any land that is not naturally moist or that cannot be irrigated.

LARGE EUCALYPTUS.—The largest eucalyptus globulus (blue gum tree) that we have seen in the State is in San Jose. It is seventeen years old from the seed, and stands in the beautiful grounds of the Lake House, near Delmas avenue. Its height is estimated by good judges to be about 100 feet. The trunk is two feet in diameter at the ground, and has the taper to the very top of a finely proportioned flag pole. The bark is smooth and the trunk is free from limbs about half its height. It more nearly resembles a tree that was grown in a thick forest than one that has been exposed to comparatively open ground. The upper limbs seem very light and toliage thin for a tree of so large a size. It is in vigorous growing condition, and blds fair to make an immense tree. A few acres of forest of such trees would be a fortune to any one. For all purposes the timber of the eucalyptus is, perhaps, the very best in the world.—California Agriculturist.
From the San Bernardino Guardian we take the following items:
Gilbert Lynch, formerly a resident of our county, now a resident of Santa Ana, near Anaheim, was in town on Saturday. He gives an encouraging report of the crops in the section where he resides, and says the new settlements of Santa Ana and Tustin city are rapidly increasing in population.
We acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to attend the first Reunion of the Olympic Club at their hall.
There are two Justices of the Peace to be elected at the Judicial election on the 15th inst. One of them goes begging—no one can be found willing to accept.
The Guardian office was present—his investigations, to keep constantly before his mind this fact, that there is no unproductive land in Southern California if it can be irrigated; and also to remember this advice, not to be persuaded into buying any land that is not naturally moist or that cannot be irrigated.

The Guardian office was presented, by M. B. Garner, with the largest watermelon that has been produced in the valley this season. It weighed 414 pounds.
We hope soon to see the day and will hail it as the beginning of a long period of agricultural prosperity, when the system of summer fallowing will become universal among our farmers. Its advantages are everything. Clean crops, sure crops, greater yield, fertility of land preserved, sowing and harrowing all done just before the rain sets in, while dry and pleasant, plowing done after the heaviest rains are over; surely the advantages are manifold. Upon this system becomes universal, the necessity of resorting to irrigation will be little urged.
Senator Conklin has written a lengthy letter of acceptance to the President in reply to the latter's nomination of the New York Senator to the vacancy created by the death of Chief Justice Chase.
Some of Casserly's friends are attempting to have the charges made against the Senator modified somewhat,
