SATURDAY OCTOBER 4, 1873
The Squirrels and Gophers.
In many of the counties of this State, the squirrels and gophers are not only a great nuisance to individual farmers, but they are a real and no inconsiderable drawback to the general agricultural advancement. In many instances in Contra Costa, in Santa Clara and Alameda and we presume in many other agricultural counties, they destroyed half of the wheat grown on individual fields of grain. Now that the cultivation of Chile clover is becoming so general and the crop is so valuable, the presence of the gopher is recognized as one of the greatest drawbacks to its cultivation also. There is no root more sought for and relished by this little enemy of the farmer, than that of the Chile clover. They burrow in the ground and work from point to point, living on this delicious root, and the wilting plant on the surface shows the course of their underground roads and ravages. Individual efforts to exterminate them, seem to have been heretofore, and will be hereafter, ineffectual and unequal to the task of destroying them or even materially checking their increase. For every one that a farmer may destroy on his farm, in neighborhood where there are no gophers.

on this delicious root, and the wilting plant on the surface shows the course of their underground roads and ravages. Individual efforts to exterminate them, seem to have been heretofore, and will be hereafter, ineffectual and unequal to the task of destroying them or even materially checking their increase. For every one that a farmer may destroy on his farm, in neighborhoods where they are plenty, ten seem to come to avenge his loss. Adjoining farms seem only the breeding grounds to send out their monthly crops of tens and hundreds of young to take the place of the ones and twos destroyed. To be effectual, any plan to get rid of these nuisances must be general—at least, so general as to embrace or cover the entire section of the country infested with them. There must be some general system or campaign adopted, that shall be carried out fully and thoroughly, so as to leave no nook or corner in which the enemy, once routed, may recuperate. Some action must be had by the Legislature, by which the necessary concert of action may be brought about; and we are glad to see that the farmers' clubs and granges are already agitating the subject and consulting together as to what plan had better be proposed to the next Legislature for its approval.
The Contra Costa county Farmers' Club has taken the initiative in this matter, and have proposed a meeting of farmers at the rooms of the State Farmers' Union, in San Francisco, for a general conference. They have invited a number of the members elect of the next Legislature, and it is evident from this fact that they intend to apply to the Legislature for some legislation upon the subject. We approve of this move, and would suggest that those most interested and who have had the most experience with these pests, take means to lay such experience, and all practical suggestions derived from such experience, not only before the Legislature when in session, but also before the public now and at any time before the meeting of that body — Record
The Mexican Veterans:
An adjourned meeting of the Veterans of the Mexican War was held in the office of J. D. Dunlap, Saturday evening.
J. A. Talbott was called to the chair, and explained the object of the meeting to be to effect a permanent organization of those who had served in the Mexican War now living in Los Angeles county.
On motion, General George Stoneman was unanimously elected President, Jno. D. Dunlap Secretary, and John Schmacher Treasurer.
A committee was then appointed to draft a Constitution and By-laws for the Association, consisting of J. J. Dunlap, Peter Thompson and H. C. Wiley.
The Secretary was instructed to notify the officers elect of their election.
On Saturday, 11th day of October, when the Constitution and By-laws will be presented for adoption.

We learn from the刻录 Times that Colonel Strong has rented of Peck & Meoney, on Deep creek, about two acres of land, upon which he proposes to plant cotton next spring. Col. Strong has proved to his satisfaction that cotton is one of the best paying crops in the State, and proposes to follow up.
