SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 1873.
An Excited Fire Company.
Some years ago a new fire company was organized at Reading, Penn., and the members one evening thought they would have a little innocent fun at the expense of Hopkins, their Captain. They decided to rush around to Hopkins' house just after dark, to throw up their ladders, pull out their hose, climb on his roof, and scare him with the belief that his dwelling was on fire. But that very day Hopkins moved out of the house and a clergyman moved in, without the company being aware of the change. So about 8 o'clock they dashed out and went through all the movements, getting on the roof and splashing water around and creating a terrific disturbance generally. A rival company, noticing what was going on, also hurried to the scene, and without understanding the joke, attached their hose to a plug, smashed in the front windows, and began to empty a two-inch stream on the family of that Presbyterian clergyman. They squirted into all the rooms, split open the window shutters with an axe, broke down the front door, ran out the furniture, torched off the shingles, and bawled through trumpets until the hired girl had convulsions on the

They squirted into all the rooms, split open the window shutters with an axe, broke down the front door, ran out the furniture, torched the shingles, and bawled through trumpets until the hired girl had convulsions on the kitchen stairs. The fire company tried to explain, but the new-comers thought an effort was being made to get them out of the way, and a fight ensued, and presently firemen were sliding off of the roof, and pelting down the chimneys, and bleeding over the entry carpet, and having boisterous encounters with spanners and brass horns on the stairs. And the next morning that divine and his family moved out, they said the place seemed to be too animated and sensational for a quiet domestic circle. They wanted a house where there was calmness and peace; where they could have more security for their privacy and pianos, and for their front doors and shingles, and peace of mind and window sashes.
The Khedive of Egypt is one of the most enterprising and intelligent farmers of the present day. He is making use of all the labor-saving machinery invented in Europe or America. We have some pretty extensive farmers in California, but Egypt can boast of farming on a scale which throws even California in the shade. The Khedive has, this year, 25,000 acres in sugar cane and he will raise about 20,000 bales of cotton, some of which, being of the Sea Island sort, will sell in England at 70 cents a pound. It is true he does not own all the land that raises these crops, but he takes the whole and pays what he pleases, and if the people say they will not work, he sends his soldiers and makes them. More than this, they must do their work well, stir around early in the morning, and keep busy all day. There must be no fooling Nor will he allow cotton speculators; everything must go direct to
is true he does not own all the land that raises these crops, but he takes the whole and pays what he pleases, and if the people say they will not work, he sends his soldiers and makes them. More than this, they must do their work well, stir around early in the morning, and keep busy all day. There must be no fooling Nor will he allow cotton speculators; everything must go direct to the commission houses. He has the best kind of cotton gins and presses, extensive sugar works, and 200 steam plows.
The firm of Call and Tuttle was a well known clothing house on Washington street, Boston, some years ago. One day a quizzical looking stranger of rather a rural air stalked into the store, and, addressing one of the clerks, remarked, "I want to tuttle." "What, sir? ejaculated the startled clerk. "I want to tuttle," replied the stranger, in a somewhat raised tone and with increased emphasis. "I don't understand you, sir," said the mystified clerk. "Why, look here," said the stranger, "it says on your sign Call and Tuttle. Now I've called, and I want to tuttle."
