Sow Early and Well.
In another article, we have shown the prospect good that the wheat crop of 1874 will bear a good price and that our farmers are warranted in making some extra exertions to put in a large breadth of land and produce a large crop. We would not have them forget, however, that the amount of crop produced does not always depend so much on the breadth of land sown, as upon the time of sowing, and the condition of the ground when sown. The past season, and we may say, all the past seasons in which wheat has been grown in California, have shown one hundred acres of land, summer fallowed and sown in good condition early, will produce more grain than two hundred acres winter plowed and sown late in the season. While, therefore, we advise the farmers to sow with a strong hope of good prices, and tell them the prospects warrant such hope; we would impress upon them the importance of doing well, and in good season, all they do. Put in all the land you have under summer fallow early, then go immediately at the land which you think will make the best crop without summer fallowing and put it in the very best order possible and sow it, but do not follow up this latter mode of sowing too late.
warrant such hope, we would impress upon them the importance of doing well, and in good season, all they do. Put in all the land you have under summer fallow early, then go immediately at the land which you think will make the best crop without summer failow and put it in the very best order possible and sow it; but do not follow up this latter mode of sowing too late in the season. If possible, get all your wheat in by the first of January, but do not by any means continue sowing later than February 1st. Of course something depends on the season, as to how late it will do to sow, out we cannot foresee the season, and it is better not to take too many chances upon it. As soon as all the ground you intend to plant this season is planted, let the work commerce on the summer failow for the following year. Let this year be the beginning for a new era in cropping for the State. Let summer fallow hereafter be the rule and not the exception, then will good crops just as surely be the rule and poor crops the exception. We have always advocated early sowing, and believe that Nature, as well as experience, fully sustains us in taking this position. When first we came to the State, we observed the crop of wild oats was uniformly good on all the vast dry plains of the country. The straw grew to an enormous size and height; the season seemed to have little effect on their growth. We believed, then, and we believe now, that the secret of this uniform growth was attributable in a great degree, to the fact, that the wild oat seed was deposited in the ground at the time Nature, by her laws of reproduction, had established as the proper time of sowing small grain in this country. This time we all know to be in the fall, so early that the new growing grain can receive the benefit of all the rain. Grain sown at this time makes a good growth in the fall; the roots get a good start and penetrate the soil to some depth, and as the warm weather of the following spring opens, the grain comes forward early and matures before the drought can aff
proper time of sowing small grain in this country. This time we all know to be in the fall, so early that the new growing grain can receive the benefit of all the rain. Grain sown at this time makes a good growth in the fall; the roots get a good start and penetrate the soil to some depth, and as the warm weather of the following spring opens, the grain comes forward early and matures before the drought can affect it. The same result will follow grain sown artificially at the same time of the year. It is true that grain sown on cultivated land so early in the season sometimes grows too rankly, and runs too much to straw. This risk, however, is but slight compared to the risk consequent on late sowing. And while we have no remedy for the risk of the drought except by irrigation, for which but few are prepared we have an easy remedy always at hand for grain threatening to grow too rank. We can feed it off or cut it down. By all means then, let the farmer this year sow his grain early in the season, and sow it well.—Record.
Our readers will bear in mind that the fair of the Southern District Agricultural Society comes off in this city in November next, commencing on the 10th and ending on the 15th of that month. Elaborate preparations are being made to make it second to no exhibition of the kind in the State Over $7,000 has been appropriated for premiums, and the managers will spare no pains to make the event agreeable to all. The entries for the races will be made to the Secretary at his office on or before the first of October next, and the entries for the ladies' equestrian contest will be made on the 15th of the same month, to enable the Society to purchase suitable premiums.—L.
