Southern Californian SATURDAY ... AUGUST 30, 1873 Guinn's speech. From the New Era we clip the following extract from a speech made in Los Angeles by Mr. J. M. Guinn. "It has been charged upon me that I am in the interests of a certain little ring, supposed to exist in Anaheim, who are determined to force a division of this county against the wishes of the people. The charge is false. I am in the interest of no ring, faction or clique in Anaheim, for that or any other purpose. My position upon the question of county division, briefly stated, is this: The right of petition is a right that belongs to all free people. Every Legislator is bound to respect that right. It the people of the county should join in a petition praying for a division of the county, and I should be elected, and such a petition should be sent to me at Sacramento, would it not be my duty, as a faithful representative of my constituents, to present such a petition to the Legislature. The man who would not do so would be unfit to represent you. The question of division is one for the people of the county to decide; if a majority decide in favor of it, then their representatives have simply to obey the will..." How glad we are to know that a "Young Men's Rallying and Protective Club" has been organized here by that marvelously young man Charles G. Johnson! And then to think that this rallying and protective club has but one great purpose in view—the election of F. P. F. Temple! These youths, with Charles G. Johnson at their head, have determined hereafter to "protect" the public coin from spoliation. Their juvenile leader, himself, stands ready to take charge of any amount of it; and give even a life assurance for its keeping. We suggest that it would help Mr. Temple's chances for C. G. J. to organize a branch of this Y. M. R. and P. Club at Anaheim, where he is not at all known.—Los Angeles Express. Ye Hing, a Chinese resident of this city, has astonished the natives by affixing a sign over his cigar factory whereupon is painted his name, translated from the hieroglyphics of China and Americanized so as to read Joseph Hinton. This pagan, it seems has applied himself very studiously in learning the English language and has acquired quite a fluency in speaking; he can also write an intelligible hand and is altogether becoming quite Americanized. We had a short conversation with Mr. Hinton a few days ago and in answer to a few questions he replied that "business is sent to me at Sacramento, would it not be my duty, as a faithful representative of my constituents, to present such a petition to the Legislature. The man who would not do so would be unfit to represent you. The question of division is one for the people of the county to decide; if a majority decide in favor of it, then their representatives have simply to obey the will of the people. Give us an honest and economical county government, and the people of the southeastern portion will not be anxious for separation; continue this unscrupulous ring in power, that have heaped burdens of taxation and debt upon us, and you will have not only the people of that portion of the county but of other portions also, asking to be separated from you." This pagan, it seems has applied himself very studiously in learning the English language and has acquired quite a fluency in speaking; he can also write an intelligible hand and is altogether becoming quite Americanized. We had a short conversation with Mr. Hinton a few days ago and in answer to a few questions he replied that "business is very slow and times are corky." And with a business tact which might be imitated by some of his Caucasian brothers, he has advertised his business in the Southern Californian. Those who affect to believe that there is little use in advertising urge as an objection that the advertisements are not read. They can easily be convinced of their error in this respect by making inquiry. Let them insert an advertisement offering to purchase some article that is tolerably plenty in the market, and they will be flooded with offers to sell before the ink of the advertisement is dry. An enterprising weekly that has a circulation of one, two or three thousand copies is in the position to do the village merchants great good. In its sphere, the weekly is of quite as much service to the advertiser as is the daily, and oftentimes enjoys the privilege of being the exclusive family visitor, a privilege the daily soldom ever has. Mr. Stanley publishes an emphatic card, denying that he will withdraw from the field for Senator. He has no idea of leaving the contest until the polls close, and is the most certain candidate about his election we ever saw. He has enough names booked to elect half a dozen Senators.—Express.
