County Clerk's office solicits the petition of Recorder and Auditor. All who had occasion to transact business with Clerk, know and appreciate the fitness of this gentleman for the position which he aspires. He too has opposed which, like the attack upon Mr. Roose seemingly relies upon innuendo and sensitivities for its success. The integrity Mr. Mottr, however, is too well established to suffer harm from an opposition, so tasteful in its character. He will unquestionably receive the support of the try precinct, and has only to fear where the influence of money is more tent than individual merit.
There are certain offices in the great people which require of their inhabitants, not only natural ability, but a certain amount of educational training, allude to the surveyorship and the terrestrial agency of the Public Schools; other qualifications being equal, the reference should invariably be given to one, who has been thus prepared: the Surveyorship, Frank Lecovreur whose professional reputation is too established to meet mention, offers him for re-election. For the Superintendent GEO. H. Peck of E. Monte is a candidate Mr. Peck, in addition to the University diplomas, received after a thorough study presents to the public a report as a scholar and an instructor of y rarely equaled and exceeded by none H. M. Mitchell, a rising and young lawyer of Los Angeles, has no position for the position of Public Attractor. THE INDEPENDENT TICKET.
On account of our limited space, we have not heretofore placed in a prominent position those candidates, to whose success we have endeavored from time to time to lend a helping hand, and who in our estimation are best qualified to worthily fill the trusts to which they aspire. In presenting these gentlemen in this issue of the CALIFORNIAN, we deem it proper, for the information of our patrons, and more particularly those living in the country, to make mention of each candidate, and whilst not attempting to detract from the individual merit, which may be possessed by their opponents, show cause why their election would conduce to the greater advantage of those citizens of the county, whose suffrages they now solicit.
DR. C. W. BUSH, of Los Angeles, who heads the ticket as a candidate for Senatorial honors, although well known in the city of his residence, and honored for his many sterling qualities of head and heart, has not a large acquaintance in the country precincts. Connected for many years with the press of the northern portion of the state he was an active and energetic worker in the early days of California's existence, and brought with him to this county on his retirement from public life a reputation for virtue and probity rarely excelled. Contrary to his desire, he has been induced by the solicitation of those who knew his value as a public man, to re-enter the political arena, and to engage again in an avocation, to which his habits and his tastes are averse. Judging from the past public record of Dr. Bush, and knowing his rare, though modest and unobtrusive merit we believe him to be one who will unswervingly guard the interests of his constituency.
J. M. GUINN, of Anaheim, is so well and so favorably known in our section that it is almost needless to mention the merit and the pre-eminent ability which make him par excellence, the leader of the Independent Ticket. During the five years, in which he has been identified with the educational interests of Los Angeles county, he has won golden opinions from all, and to-day stands before the people of the county, as the only man, whose public morality and private morality are so high that study presents to the public a report as a scholar and an instructor of young lawyer of Los Angeles, has no position for the position of Public Attractor. Although on this account he not need the active assistance of his trainee influenced by a strong sense of sterling qualities, can not retain congratulating the people of the county upon their good fortune in securing services of so capable a gentleman.
For the new office of Commission Highways, two gentlemen present themselves, F. M. QUINN, of En Monte W. M. OSBORNE, of Los Angeles. Of them would satisfactorily fill this task. We give the preference to Quinn however, because in his capacity of Deputy Assessor he has better opportunity of becoming acquainted with our road necessities, and being aident of what is considered the sound end of the county, would conscientiously devote much attention to road matters have heterobore been sadly neglected.
One of the most important and reliable offices—that of District Attorney has been filled for the past four years C. E. THOM, of Los Angeles, who is a delegate for re-election. This gents ranks deservedly amongst the leaders the Bar of Los Angeles, and during time, in which he has officially served people has obtained the approval of law abiding citizens for the stern rigid discharge of his duty. The person that he is an eminent and talented lawyer; they know that the duties inherent upon the District Attorney never been so ably and impartially charged as by him; and it would be prudent therefore to entrust so impatient office to an untrivial man; moreover toify a desire for a change.
TWEEDLEDUM AND TWEEDEE.
It is really amusing to note the argument by the advocates of Mr. TEMPLE induce the people of this county to draw their support from the present thy County Treasurer. Nothing is said against him as an individual or public servant, but it is argued that county funds are in danger of absence they are deposited for safety in the vaults of a banking institution with which Mr. Rowan is clerically connected. Mr. Rowan has no indictment in the Farmers' and Mercury Bank, and in all probability value good name more than the prosperity employers. Mr. TEMPLE, on the corp constitutes "The Bank." There is a proverb that says "distrust a woman praises of her virtue, and a man who
J. M. GUINN, of Anaheim, is so well and so favorably known in our section that it is almost needless to mention the merit and the pre-eminent ability which make him, par excellence, the leader of the Independent Ticket. During the five years, in which he has been identified with the educational interests of Los Angeles county, he has won golden opinions from all, and to-day stands before the people of the county, as the only man, whose public morality and private worth are of so high an order, that no pledge regarding his future public action is required by his constituency.
WM. H. WORKMAN, of Los Angeles, the other candidate for the Assembly, is an old citizen of the county and is at present one of the City Fathers of Los Angeles. In that capacity he has proved himself a zealous advocate of the interests of the agricultural community, and we do not hesitate to assert that, if selected to represent this county in the next Legislature, he will prove worthy of the trust which will have been reposed in him.
That A. W. PORTS and WM. R. ROWLAND, the candidates for the Clerkship and Shrievalty, are efficient public servants is demonstrated by the fact that they have no opposition for the positions to which they aspire. They have each served a term, and have approved themselves emphatically the best men for their respective offices.
THOS. E. ROWAN, the present incumbent, is a candidate for re-election to the Treasurership. His affability and uniform courtesy of manner have deservedly given to him a personal popularity, which is more than friendship and nearly akin to love, whilst his strict attention to, and conscientious and faithful performance of the duties of his office have conclusively shown his public incorruptibility. A weak attempt is being made to defeat him, but the high estimation in which he is held will undoubtedly render futile an attack, which is born of personal spleen, and which relies solely upon money to give it success.
S. H. MORT, who for many years has filled the position of chief deputy in the public servant, but it is argued that county funds are in danger of absorption because they are deposited for safekeeping in the vaults of a banking institution with which Mr. ROWAN is clerically nected. Mr. ROWAN has no interest in the Farmers' and Mercury Bank, and in all probability values good name more than the prosperity of employers. Mr. TEMPLE, on the contrary constitutes "The Bank". There is a proverb that says: "distrust a woman praises her virtue and a man who proclaims his incorruptible honour." We would not for an instant harbor idea that either of the two candidates the Treasurership would commit a defect action. It has merely occurred that the line of attack pursued by TEMPLE is most strongly suggestive.
AN INSULT.
It is asserted publicly in Los Angeles and with strong evidence of truth twelve hundred dollars has been placed in the hands of some person in this town by friends of Mr. TEMPLE for purchasing the German vote. It is the case, it is a gross insult to the man portion of the community, votes are proverbially unpurchasable can only redound to the disadvantage overwhlming defeat of Mr TEMPLE gentleman, if this report be true, even one of the most sublime instances of votion to the public interests on receipt the salary does not justify a large ditture of money, or else he wants badly — the office.
AN EFFICIENT OFFICE
Under the old regime, it had been by-word that crime could not be punished in Los Angeles county: Since the occasion of the office of District Attorney by Thom convictions have been made in instance, where guilt existed. Receiving this case would undoubtedly mean to to the ancient disorderly and lawless Law abiding citizens should endure retain an officer so fearless in the presence of his duty.
