Southern Californian SATURDAY ... AUGUST 23, 1873 The Railroad. Last Sunday we took a walk to the depot grounds of the Southern Pacific Railroad, located nearly in front of the County Hospital, and found the track laid from the Los Angeles and San Pedro Depot, to within a few hundred yards of that point. On the grounds we found a construction camp of twelve or fifteen wagons, a dozen tents, a large number of men, horses, mules, scrapers, plows and all varieties of grading tools. The work had already been commenced and a short distance eastward, in the direction of the river, partially graded. This is, we believe, the force which, having lately finished the last section of the road built southward from Tipton, has come here to push forward the work. A sufficient quantity of ties, rails and other material to complete a considerable length of road, is already here, ready for use, and more arrives by every train from Wilmington. These things show that the railroad company mean to push the work through without delay, and already the effect is seen in an improvement of business in the city. — Los Angeles Mirror. The Napa Register says of E. J. Church, a St. Helena fruit-grower, that he has an acre of gooseberries, and he has gathered this year 700 pounds of the fruit. He has two acres of blackberry vines, and has this year sold from them five tons of berries, averaging about seven and a half cents per pound; an aggregate of say, $750 from that source alone; not a bad beginning for a mountain ranch, started without capital.
