Menzel has gone to San Bernardino, and will return with a cargo of Accident.—We learn from the Los Angeles Express, that Mr. M. G. Pumphrey, well known in Anaheim, met with a serious accident. It seems that on Sunday night he returned to his room, on the third story of the Pico House, but, after going to bed, found the heat so oppressive that he could not sleep, and got up and sat on the sill of the window of his room. In this position he dozed off into a sleep. This is the last thing he recollects until he awoke from the shock of striking the solid asphaltum sidewalk. The presumption is that in his sleep he moved forward, and instinctively finding himself falling grabbed at the halt shut window above his head, for he was heard to strike with a loud noise against the arc it rave on which his feet had rested. He was carried to his room, and Dr Wise was called, who examined the injured man. He considers that his chances for recovery are hopeful. Although he is by no means out of danger, he is much better than the Doctor had hoped for. Mr. Pumphrey arrived from Oakland on Wednesday evening by the Telegraph Stage Line, and her caretaking nursing will go far towards hastening his recovery. A Row.—On Wednesday a complaint was lodged in Judge Kohler's Court, by Dubarry Jean, charging one Henry Bossa with threatening The weather has not been so sultry as during the past week. Both of the gentlemen in question live near the Corote house, and are engaged in the propagation of wool and sheep. Bossa owed Jean some money, but a slight misunderstanding as to the amount, led to a quarrel, and while Bossa ran into his cabin with the intention of procuring his pistol, Jean ran into Anaheim and had him arrested. Owing to the impossibility of procuring legal advisers, the case was transferred to Judge Trafford's Court in Los Angeles. A Concert.—On Wednesday evening, a concert will be given at Enterprise Hall, by the Westminster Choir. Their object is to procure money to purchase an organ for use in the church and school house. Among those who will assist on this occasion are Mesdames Goldworthy and Bowley and Messrs Poor and Crowther. Mr. Poor will read several of Hans Breitman's longbable Dutch sketches. Justice Clark rendered the following judgments during the week: Crowther vs. Leihy, judgment for plaintiff for $871; Crook & Sulliwan vs. Leihy, judgment for plaintiff for $1461. The San Diego papers are waking up the Supervisors of that county in regard to grading the worst part of the road between San Diego and San Bernardino. One John Magee offers to make the necessary repairs for $1,000. We were much pleased to make the acquaintance of Dr. C. W. Bush during a recent visit to Los Angeles. We found the Doctor to be a quiet, unassuming gentleman, pleasant and courteous in manner, and possessing qualifications of mind, which will undoubtedly cause him to become a power in the next Legislature. His selection by the People's Party, as their leader in the present campaign, was unquestionably a master-stroke of policy. Bush, Assembly, A. Higuei, J. M. Guirn, Sheriff, Wm. R. Rowland, Clerk, A. His visit to this section is for the purpose of properly organizing and placing in complete working order, the Subordinate Granges, which have recently been formed in the southern portion of the State. Communications can be addressed to him through the post office or Wells, Fargo & Co., Los Angeles. Los Angeles Library—One of the institutions of Los Angeles city is the public library, founded some months ago. It is a child of the people originated and supported by them, and has proved already of incalculable benefit in offering to all but more particularly to young men, a pleasant place for recreation, amusement and instruction. To the kind assistance given the undertaking by Gov. Downey, Dr. Griffin, and other public-spirited citizens of Los Angeles much of its present prosperity is indebted; yet we cannot refrain from expressing the belief that in its general internal arrangement and management, the institution has prospered by having secured the services of the gentlemanly and courteous librarian, J. C. Littlefield. Thermometrical and Hygrometrical Record for July. We present below to our readers, our final record of the wet and dry bulbs of the hygrometer, prepared by Mr. Francis S. Miles of this place. JULY 1872 The average temperature for the month of July, 1872, was 72 degrees, the thermometer ranging from a maximum of 83° to a minimum of 66°. We present this to our readers, in order that they may compare the two years together, and judge for themselves, regarding the evenness of our temperature. NEW WAY OF COLLECTING.—On Thursday, Isaac Calisher was arrested by Constable Pulley, on a complaint made by Juan Moreno. The case was tried yesterday before Judge Khler. It seems that Calisher and Moreno were indulging in a quiet game of "draw" in which the former got "busted," and in a fit DEEDS FILLED.—Anos Travis to Mary C. Vandegraft—One hundred acres of land in the rancho Santiago de Santa Ana for $5. James F Barham to Henry Watson—Land in the same rancho for $1. A. B. Chapman to J. W. Davenport—a west half of the "Davenport tract" in the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana, $815 60 in gold coin. P. Coleman and S. Coleman to B. A Daring—Certain lots in Anabeim for $500 gold coin. REAL ESTATE AGENCY — We would call the attention of the public to the column of Frank R. Lalaucherie, agent for the house of Bennett and Page in San Francisco. He has also established an agency for the sale of lands, stock or anything that is salable. "Frank's" energy and business fact are too well known in Anabeim to need comment, but we would advise all who wish to employ an agent to transact their business to call upon him, as we do not doubt that, by so doing, they will largely benefit themselves. MARINE INSURANCE.—P. A. Clark the agent of the State Investment and Insurance Company of California, has been empowered by this company to issue marine policies on all shipments of grain, wool and general merchandise, made on the NEW WAY OF COLLECTING.—On Thursday, Isaac Calisher was arrested by Constable Pullen, on a complaint made by Juan Moreno. The case was tried yesterday before Judge Kohler. It seems that Calisher and Moreno were indulging in a quiet game of "draw" in which the former got "busted," and in a fit of indignation reached over the table, to where the money won by Moreno was lying, and "grabbed" nine dollars, which he pocketed and refused to give up. Calisher in his own behalf admitted taking the money, but claimed that Moreno owed him nine dollars borrowed money. Judge Kohler, while disputing his assertion, reminded him that there was a more lawful manner of collecting old debts, and ordered him to pay over to Moreno the sum of nine dollars, and pay the costs, amounting to as much more. ANOTHER CHURCH — We are informed that efforts are being made by the Episcopal portion of the community to erect a church edifice. The Rev. Mr. Luke of San Gabriel was in town on last Sunday, but owing to the illness of his child, was prevented from bringing the subject prominently before the public. He is intention during the latter part of the present month to hold religious service in Anaheim, the Presbyterians having kindly offered him the use of their building. During his visit here at that time, he will investigate the probabilities of recurring the funds necessary to erect a suitable building. A CELESTIAL MUDDLE.—Sin Se Wau invoked the aid of the law to recover from another Chraman the sum of ten dars, alleged to be due for board. The witnesses being all natives of the Flowery Kingdom, and no interpreter to be had, it was impossible for Judge Kohler to decide intelligently. But having great confidence in his powers as a physiognomist, he gave judgment for Sin Se Wau, being convinced themselves regarding the evenness of our temperature. MARINE INSURANCE.—P. A. Clark the agent of the State Investment and Insurance Company of California, has been empowered by this company to issue marine policies on all shipments of grain, wool and general merchandise, made on the regular line of steamers or sailing vessels to and from San Francisco, San Diego and way ports. He also insure any steamer shipments from Anaheim, via San Diego and Panama, to New York. No risks will be taken on "scows" during the winter months. But having great confidence in his powers as a physiognomist, he gave judgment for Sin Se Wau, being convinced from the honest expression of his features, that his claim was just. Bush vs. Morgan. The defendants in this suit have been allowed five days to amend their answer, thus virtually continuing the case until the next term of the District Court. It is a suit, which is quite interesting to the purchasers of land on the Santa Ana ranch, as it involves the question of how many ditches were allowed to be constructed through that ranch, by decree of the court, giving to each owner of land in the ranch a right of way for irrigating purposes. Smash Up. A buggy, containing Mrs Purney and her daughter, collided with a six-horse team late yesterday afternoon and was upset, throwing the two occupants out.
