Very respectfully,
Kohler & Frohling.
Messrs. Kohler & Frohling, San Francisco, California.
GENTLEMENT—Your favor of the both instant, making inquiry in regard to the insect Phylloxera vasta, has been received. In answer to questions similar to your own, the Department has replied that while this insect has been known to exist in the United States many years, its ravages have been of a character to seriously injure grape growers. Professor Kohler, one of our most experienced entomologists, has traced it back as far as the year 1845. This gentleman seems to have been the only entomologist who has noted serious attention to an investigation of the history, habits and ravages of this insect. Froment investigation he has satisfied that vineyards attacked by have to be rooted out used for other agricultural purposes. It is said to have made its trance in Austria, Italy, Greece, south of Russia, Asia, and even both houses of England, and is used to have been introduced Austria by grape cuttings and from the United States. German Government, to promote German wine growers, has presented prohibited the imitation of grape cuttings and the growing importance of culture of the grapes to the United States, together with the fact that this insect is not destroyed transportation, no matter how far the distance would, we think, grant our Government in adoption similar prohibitory regulations. We largely interested in the cultivation of the grape, both in Los Angeles and Sonoma counties, in this life; we take the liberty of calling attention to these facts, and of asking the inquiry whether your petition has any information of existence in this insect in the United States, and if so, what means should be used for its extermination.
Very respectfully,
Kohler & Frohling.
been of a character to seriously in grape growers. Professor y, one of our most experienced ontologists, has traced it back as the year 1845. This gentle seems to have been the only of our Entomologists who has noted serious attention to an investigation of the history, habits and ravages of this insect. From ent investigation he has satisfied himself that the insect is the known Grape Leaf Gall Louse. In recent report, which accompanies the transactions of the Mis-State Board of Agriculture, for year 1871, he devotes considerable space to a discussion of the subject. In this article are detailed his recent investigations and disruptions as to the history and habits of insect.
Believing that Prof. Riley's report furnish you the desired information remain very respectfully,
Fred. Watts, Comissioner.
A comparison of the newspaper of the country, from an early census of the year 1870, develop many interesting facts. A number of newspapers publish in the United States in 1725; in 1775, 34; in 1801, 200; in 1839; in 1826, 630; in 1828, 528; in 1830, 1,000; in 1834, 1,265; in 1,401; in 1850, 5,302. It will be seen by the foregoing that the increase in thirty years was 1,042, to the increase in the last thirty years—from 1840 to 1870—was; the total number of public reports in the census of 1870 was 5,871; or one for every 6,561 population.
