THE WATER QUESTION.
Since our last issue, the subject of water has been very actively discussed. At the meeting of the stockholders of the Anaheim Water Company held on Saturday nothing definite was determined upon but the matter was left open until to lay when Mr. Zerv appointed to confer with the Semi-Tropic Water Company, will present to his company the result of his conference. We trust that the opposing interests may not deem it necessary to involve themselves in litigation, but may arrive at a peaceful solution of this much vexed question. In view of the fact that during the past week, Messrs. Howard and Polhemus two gentlemen largely interested in land in this section have visited the proposed route of the large canal suggested by us, for the purpose of investigating the practicability of the scheme we would recommend caution and deliberation in action. These gentlemen have been favorably impressed with our proposition and see the many advantages which will accrue not only to the convention composed of seven Republicans and seven delegates selected People's convention, will assemble to in Los Angeles for the purpose of notting a legislative and local ticket in position to the straight-out Democrat nominations, made at their primaries last month. It is thought that "measures" will be the governing principle of the convention, and an attempt will doubt be made to select from each party those whose personal popularity give strength to an opposition, which as yet no clearly defined platform which to operate. As far as Los Angeles and the northern portion of the county concerned, the fight thus far seems between individuals, to the completeclusion of any issue which has arisen during the progress of the campaign. The southern portion of the city has up to the present time, and favors to the Republicans at first subsequently to a People's movement the Democracy having allowed so strong an opposition to our desire to effect vision of the county. Whether that ing will remain unchanged rests in a measure with the delegates who make this convention. It is favorable returned to our wishes in regard to selection of one of the Assemblymen do not doubt that the People's move will remain popular in our section that the legislative portion of the will meet with a warm and hearty port from our citizens. It, on the hand the gentleman whom we have lected to be our standard bearer is going we have as little doubt that political here will be found to be—in a tail parlance—"very much mixed."
In any event a great interest is due derelations of the convention much as a ter definite action by them
involve themselves in litigation, but may arrive at a peaceful solution of this much vexed question. In view of the fact that during the past week, Messrs. Howard and Porterus two gentlemen largely interested in land in this section have visited the proposed route of the large canal suggested by us, for the purpose of investigating the practicability of the scheme we would recommend caution and deliberation in action. These gentlemen have been favorably impressed with our proposition and see the many advantages, which will accrue, not only to the community generally but to themselves as well, by an undertaking which will not only unite the different conflicting interests on this side of the river, but which will besides by developing our manufacturing facilities, bring into our midst a class of population, adding largely to our wealth and prosperity. After consultation with the other members of the Land Company in San Francisco, one of the two gentlemen, named above, will return to this place in order to inaugurate active measures, tending to construct at the earliest moment, the contemplated canal. There is every prospect now that the water question will, in a very short time assume a tangible shape. We would therefore suggest a second time to our water companies to move slowly and not involve themselves in a litigation which may prove more vexatious than profitable.
ANOTHER COLONY.
We see by the San Diego Union that another colony is in process of formation in Indiana for the purpose of settling at some point in Southern California. Their intention is to purchase ten thousand acres of good farming land, lay out a town in the centre of the tract, and allot to each member a farm with a block three hundred feet square in the town. The colony is to be composed of one hundred and fifty families and already fifty men, heads of families, have enrolled them via Messrs. Berry and Kimball, members of the association, left Indiana solo on the 20th of this month for Southern California to select a suitable site for the colony.
The only really good farming land in this portion of the State is the Santa Ana valley and these gentlemen should not be allowed to pass our section by, without being thoroughly posted in regard to our many excellencies of soil, climate and location. We would call the attention of the Land Company to the matter and trust that injunctions may be offered them to settle amongst us. There is a strong disposition manifested on the part of the inhabitants of the Western States to emigrate to this land of promise. The enterprise exhibited by the citizens of San Diego and Santa Barbara has in the past do not doubt that the People's move will remain popular in our section that the legislative portion of the will meet with a warm and hearty port from our citizens. It, on the hand the gentleman whom we havelected to be our standard bearer is going to have as little doubt that political here will be found to be—in tail parlance—"very much mixed."
In any event a great interest is due dereliberations of the convention much as a later definite action by their campaign will be really opened and leaders on both sides will take the prospective places in order to make open.
WORK COMMENCED BETWEEN GALLATIN AND FLORENCE
On Thursday morning grading commenced on the branch road of Southern Pacific Railway, extending Florence on the line of the an railroad towards Anahiem. It is theention of the company to push tha to completion, as far as our neighbor Latin as rapidly as possible. A quantity of cross ties have already been at Wilminton, and the iron will hand as soon as needed.
The railroad era for Los Angeles has at length arrived. Despite the hostiles of crackers and odors, caption will inaugurate an era of increased wealth and growing prosperity to country, which will undoubtedly be magical to all unacquainted with rapid development, attendant upon road construction. We congratulate sister village of Gallatin upon being first likely to experience good train enterprise. Her immense grain and fields need a speedy and common means of transportation and it is, then without envy and with sincere pity that we herald the advent of the rift to that place.

THE SAN BERNARDINO TRADE.
San Diego proposes to build a wagon road to San Bernardino With San Diego, to propose is to excute. This road completed and the entire trade of San Bernardino and Arizona, now distributed between Wilmington and Anaheim Landing, will be permanently diverted from its natural channel and no effort on our part made in the future, will avail to recover it.
It is such an easy matter to prevent San Diego from doing us this serious injury, at least for some years to come. At a cost of a few hundred dollars, and with light work, a wagon road could be made from Rubot town to Anaheim, and would be instrumental in giving to Anaheim Landing most, if not all, the territorial freights shipped via Los Angeles and Wimington. San Diego is willing and will spend thousands of dollars to secure for itself this addition to its civic income. We do not take interest in the matter, sufficient to even talk upon the subject. The example of enterprise and industry shown by San Diego in developing resources, which more properly belong to other sections, and which are made to redound to the benefit of the residents of that place, is worthy of inspiration.
CONVENTION TO-DAY.
on composed of seven Republican delegates selected by a convention, will assemble to-day for the purpose of nominating and local ticket in opposing the straight-out Democratic made at their primaries, held. It is thought that men, not women, will be the governing principle in action, and an attempt will be made to select from each political whose personal popularity will lead to an opposition, which has early defined platform upon state. As far as Los Angeles northern portion of the county is the fight thus far seems to be individual, to the complete issue which has arisen or bring the progress of the camp southern portion of the councils present time, inclined the Republicans at first, and to a People's movement having shown no treasured to our desire to effect a discount. Whether that feel unchanged resides in a great with the delegates who meet in it. If favorable ear is our wishes in regard to one of the Assemblymen, we that the People's movement popular in our section and active portion of the ticket with a warm and hearty support of our citizens. It, on the other hand, whom we have our standard bearer is ignored little doubt that political affairs are found to be in tailor-made very much mixed."
