A Ridiculous Story.
The Graphic publishes an extract from a private letter, dated Rome, May 15th, which tells of a rumor prevalent in that city that Pope Pius IX died some days previous, and that his place is filled by a bold and astute priest named Abbate Minati. The story goes that when the news of the Pope's fatal illness was published the Cardinals hastened to the Vatican to consider the condition of affairs. They found the situation an exceedingly critical one for the Church. It seemed to them that nothing could be more inopportune than the death of the Pope and the election of his successor at this moment. They determined upon a stroke of the most daring and astonishing character. There was a priest of the Order of Benedictines named Abbate Minati, who bore a most striking resemblance to Pius the IX; accordingly, they determined that Father Minati in the event of the Pope's death should enact a part. The Pope died, but instead of their announcing the fact to the public, they began to inform the outside world that the Holy Father was getting better and finally that he was quite well again—the fact being that the remains of Pius IX, were hidden away in some secret recess of the Vatican cellars, and that Abbate Minati,

The Pope died, but instead of their announcing the fact to the public, they began to inform the outside world that the Holy Father was getting better and finally that he was quite well again—the fact being that the remains of Pius IX, were hidden away in some secret recess of the Vatican cellars, and that Abbate Minati quietly stepped into his place. Today the head of the Church is a dummy wearing the form and keeping up the traditions of Pius IX, even to the extent of taking a pinch of snuff during Mass. Of course great care will be taken that this propontiff exercises none of the functions of real infallibility. He will receive deputations, smile at fably after compliments in Latin, take a walk now and then in the Vatican gardens, and perform such of the sacred ceremonies as are indispensable; but anything beyond that he will not do. We shall not have any more bulls, fulminations, encyclicals or syllabuses for the present.
Artificial Clouds.
The Pall Mall Gazette says: "What with phylloxera, oidum, etc., the vineyards of France have so many enemies that there is some consolation in being able to announce that a curious contrivance has been devised for protecting plants from frost. How many hopes of endless barrels of wine have been nipped in the bud on one cold cloudless night. Last year the vines of Thomery were frozen to the very marrow by a sudden change in the temperature, and it will be long before they recover. Yesterday M. Barrel ascended a heap of stones on the road which runs from St. Cloud to Suresnes, and from that improvised tribune explained to about one thousand persons the immense advantage to be derived from artificial clouds, which can be drawn like a curtain over any spot threatened with frost. When the sky is clear, when there is neither wind or dew, nor clouds, and when the glass falls below zero, then danger is to be apprehended. To avert evil effects, small pots of tar-soil, placed about twenty feet apart, should be lighted; these will emit a dark, heavy smoke, and hang for several hours over the land, preventing radiation, and, in fact, answering one of the purposes of clouds, which is to prevent heat..."

For about £5 a whole country side can be protected in this way and the evil influences of the 'red moon' averted. These artificial clouds have been tried at Montpelier, where they are said to have answered capitally. Some were manufactured yesterday, but there was much wind and they were swept away in the direction of St Cloud."
State Grange.
We learn from the Sacramento Record that Mr. Garretson, of Iowa, is on his way to the coast to visit the Granges already organized and to establish a State Grange. The following Granges have now been organized: Napa, West San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Vacaville, Chico, Merced, Salida, Suisun Valley, San Jose, Hollister, Sacramento, Yolo, Point of Timber, Bennett Valley, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, Pilot Hill and Colusa. Mr. Baxter has appointments for organizing five more Granges, and is corresponding with more localities. A State Grange will be organized in a few days and this movement will give a new impetus to the work. New Deputies will probably be placed in the field as one man is unable to meet the calls for his services. The faster the farmers enroll their names as members of this Order the sooner will the good to be derived from the organization be realized.

Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Fancy Drink, made of Poor Rum, Whiskey, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquor, doctored, spiced, and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonies," "Appetizers," "Restorers," &c., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, made from all Alcoholic Stimulants. They are the Great Blood Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refreshing and invigorating both mind and body. They are easy of administration, prompt in their action, certain in their results, safe and reliable in all forms of disease.
No Person can take these Bitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair.
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Billious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Infammation of the Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the onsprings of Dyspepsia. In these complaints it has no equal, and one bottle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement.
For Female Complaints, in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence that a marked improvement is soon perceptible.
For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilions, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs.
They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Inflammation of the liver and Visceral Organs and in Bilious Diseases.
For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt-
A sure Cure for Dyspepsia!
A most Efficient and Pleasant Tonic.
These Bitters are prepared from the most choice and wholesome herbs and roots, and have given universal satisfaction wherever tried. Thousands of dyspeptics have found relief through their use, and physicians recommend them for the cure of all diseases of the blood and liver, and irregularities of the digestive organs.
Healthy, Billiousness, and Constipation. General Obligation and Loss of Appetite are all caused by the derangement of the Stomach, Liver and other functionaries of the system. The IX.L. Bitters have been successfully used and are warranted to alleviate the sufferer in all the above cases.
The IX.L. Bitters are sold only in glass; to sell other than the genuine article out of our bottles is foolish, and we will when detected present such parties to the full extent of the case.

I have carefully examined Dr. Henley's IX.L. Bitters, and have failed to detect anything which would figure even the most delicate constitution. From the composition of the Bitters, as far as I know should include IX.L. Bitters must be a very efficient remedy in Dyspepsia. Indication. Loss of Appetite and similar complaints being composed of a number of vegetable drugs which are principally used in diseases of that nature, and are of the greatest efficiency in their cure.

One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of their curative effects.
Cleanse the Vitilated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sorces; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow.
Grateful Thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained the sinking system.
Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectively destroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist: There is scarcely an individual on the face of the earth whose body is exempt from the presence of worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breed living monsters of disease. The system medicine, no vermifuges, no antilemmines, will free the system from worms like these Bitters.
Mechanical Diseases, Persons engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Type-servers, Gold-boaters, and Miners, as they advance in Life are subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this, take a dose of Walker's Vinegar Bitters twice a week.
Billions, Remittent, and Intermittent Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States especially those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red Colorado, razos,Rio Grande,Pearl,Ambala Mobile,Savannah,Roaneke, janes, and many others with their vast tributaries throughout our entire country during the Summer and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness are invariably accompanied by extensive deramments of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal visceras. In their treatment,a purgative exerting a powerful influence upon various organsis essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr.J.Walker's Vinegar Bitters as they will speedily remove the dark-colored visual matter with which the bowels are loadedat the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs.

Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the inflammation (the tubular deposits)the affected parts receive health, and a permanent cure is effected.
The properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are Aperient,Diaphoretic,Carminative,Nutritious,Laxative,Direcute,Sedative,Counter-Irritant,Sudorife.Alterative,and Anti-Billions.
The Apterient and mild Laxative properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are best safeguard in cases of eruptions and malignant fevers. The biliary canal healing, and soothing properties protect the humors of the fauces. The Sedative properties allay pain in the nervous system,t stomach, and bowelsfrom inflammation wind, colic, cramps,eTC.

Dr. RADWAY has had several years' experience with every thing that was recommended; just what help needed; saw your Resolution; and thought I would try but had no faith in it because I had suffered for twelve years. I took six bottles of the Resolution and one box of Radway's Pills; and both had little benefit if I did not feel it to be so for twelve years. The worst-factor was in finding out of the bowels over my gums; I write this to you for the benefit of others. You can publish it if you choose.
