Orders promptly filled Of Battle county the Chico says: The want of rain has doubt, affected some portions of oil and will curtail the yield usually but we are constrained, from servations and from the reports for different sections, as a whole, to be we have a chance for the best crop State. If we have no more rainieve that we will have more than crop and that in this we will have beyond most other sections of the culture of Cranberry. Where do all the cranberries come is a question often asked; and, on occasion, we are fairly astonished to rise and remarkable amount of necessity. No tea table is now complete without it, and on ship it is of indispensable utility. New raises the largest bulk of cranberry this country, employing about six acres for the purpose, the value crop raised on which, last year $600,000. The whole cranberry of the country is estimated at $1, Massachusetts raises not less than thousand barrels a year. Within five years Wisconsin has made progress in the culture of the cranberry and the crop in that State this year estimated at $300,000. The average per barrel of this fruit is $10. California cranberries commanding the highest fruit raised on the Cape is the kind in the world. It is largely to England, and finds its the Queen's dinner-table. The Crops. Days the Merced Tribune: The grain in its vicinity, considering the long spell of weather, looks much better than could be been expected. The early sown grain to last week, looked healthy, but even in the majority of the fields is beginning to look "spotted," the heads begin to wither at the top. Where the soil is an alkali character, the crops thereon be a total failure. Days the Antioch (Contra Costa county) Herter: All the land which was summerowed gives promise of a good crop. It courageing to see the crops of wheat barley about the Iron House on the shish creek delta Mr. Barkley, and also of his neighbors on Eden Plain, have seen what can be done by a small quant of water, raised by wind on a dry field. They have made some of the state places" of the great desert of the Joaquin valley "to blossom as the affording all the necessaries and of the luxuries of life. About half will be harvested in the vicinity of point of Timber, in the delta of Keloreck. Newman, whose farm is in the immeiite vicinity of Antioch, has one hundred acres. How San Diego was Built Up—Influence of the Press. The San Bernardino Argus is publishing a series of articles on the rise and progress of San Diego, doubtless from the pen of Mr. Gould, who was one of the founders of the San Diego Bulletin. We commend to the people of this city the following extract, showing how well the founders of San Diego's prosperity understood the value of the press, and with what sensible liberality they supported it. Outside of San Diego and Santa Barbara, we hardly believe that the Southern Coast offers a parallel for an individual citizen subscribing for more than one copy of the local paper, much less for from ten to twenty: To show how the town was started and the interest its citizens took in spreading information abroad concerning its commercial and climatic advantages and its mineral and agricultural resources, we will state that its citizens patronized the Bulletin liberally. Often have we received eight and ten yearly subscriptions from one man. Our subscription list would average five hundred copies sent to the Eastern States, and nearly all forwarded by people interested in the future welfare of San Diego. In this respect Mr. Horton of his neighbors on Eden Plain, have seen what can be done by a small quarantine of water, raised by wind on a dry land. They have made some of the state places" of the great desert of the Joaquin valley "to blossom as the affording all the necessaries and of the luxuries of life. About half will be harvested in the vicinity of point of Timber, in the delta of Kelnerock. Newman, whose farm is in the immediate vicinity of Antioch, has one hundred sixty acres of barley, which he will yield forty bushels to the acre. Newman informs us that this is the season that his land has been seeded, that he has failed but once during this period of growing a good crop, either of oats or barley. He attributes his efforts to deep plowing and sowing with best rain of the season. Adise valley says the Modesto (Stanislaus county) Nocs, and in the county, there are a great many of the whether it rains or not, will produce a crop, whilst the most of them give a fair yield with light showers loamy damp weather. The early barley is looking decidedly well so noticed wheat grown in March that will set aid of a healthy color, which make a good yield with a little rain. June and summer plowed fields mostly lost and but few could be saved over so much rain. the Santa Rosa, (Sonoma county) Nocs: The condition of the growing is far better than this time last year at more rain we will have fair crops, in the usual shower in haying time will be fully up to the average. Sanoma county correspondent remarks without exception grain upon summer land is looking finely and will largely, while the balance is already ideal. It is evident that while waiting canal our farmers must plow deep summer fallow their lands. The Cajon valley, San Diego county, it was thought grain would not pay, it has (says the Union) improved that all in the valley will be cut except that of Stublet & Co.—about acres—which will be cut for grain.imated that the average yield will be one-half ton per acre of the best of hay. the Santa Rosa, (Sonoma county) Nocs: The want of rain has, without affected some portions of our county curtail the yield usually furnished; are constrained, from our own objections and from the reports from directions, as a whole, to believe that a chance for the best crops of the day we have no more rain, we be-that we will have more than half a day that in this we will be blessed most other sections of the State. To show how the town was started and the interest its citizens took in spreading information abroad concerning its commercial and climatic advantages and its mineral and agricultural resources, we will state that its citizens patronized the Bulletin liberally. Often have we received eight and ten yearly subscriptions from one man. Our subscription list would average five hundred copies sent to the Eastern States, and nearly all forwarded by people interested in the future welfare of San Diego. In this respect Mr. Horton stood foremost in liberality, as he always has since. He believes in patronizing the local paper, and to this fact may be attributed a great share of his successa. The Union was also as liberally supported. The people believed in the true theory, that if they had anything to sell they must advertise; if they possessed superior advantages over another locality in regard to climate, advertise it; if they have finer agricultural lands, better adapted to the growing of fruits, etc., advertise them; if they had the best harbor in the world, advertise it; if the distance between New York and Japan was shortened 800 miles by coming via San Diego, advertise it; and they did advertise it, and successfully too. People flocked in to see what all the noise was about; and they, too, soon began to make a noise, and the clamor increased, until San Diego became as well known all over the world, as New York or Boston. The town became filled with strangers, chiefly from the East, who purchased lots erected residence and business houses, goods commenced to arrive, and the prices of property steadily advanced. Indeed, so great was the advance, that people would go to bed comparatively poor, and wake up in the morning rich. Horton, of course, became the richest of them all. Fitting Boots at the Store. The following from the Danbury News will read like a familiar experience to some who peruse this paper: It is a little singular how well a pair of boots can be made to fit at the store. You may not be able to get your foot only part way down the leg at the first trial, but that is because your stocking is sweaty, or you haven't started right, and the shoe-maker suggests that you start again and stand up to it, and he throws in a little powder from a pepper box to aid you. And so you stand up, and pound down your foot, and partly trip yourself up, and your eyes stick out in an unpleasant manner, and every vein in your body appears to be on the point of bursting, and all the while that dealer stands around and eyes the operation as intently as if the whole affair was perfectly new and novel to him. When your foot has finally struck Culture of Cranberries. Do all the cranberries come from, onion often asked; and, on investigation are fairly astonished to witness and remarkable amount of business acted in this small fruits Towing low lands, useless for any purpose, the cranberry, once planted, adds the possessor a greater profit similar area of other crops on the consumption of this fruit is extendable into all parts of the world; is more and more a household item. No tea table is now considered without it, and on ship voyages disposable utility. New Jersey has largest bulk of cranberries in every employing about six thousand for the purpose, the value of the crop on which, last year, was $150,000. The whole cranberry crop of every is estimated at $1,500,000. Sets raises not less than ten barrels a year. Within the past Wisconsin has made rapid in the culture of the cranberry crop in that State this season is at $300,000. The average price of this fruit is $10, Cape Cod is commanding the highest price raised on the Cape is the best of the world. It is exported England, and finds its way to dinner-table. The funeral of Captain Thomas, killed by the Modocs, took place in Washington on Sunday. General Sherman and nearly all the army officers were present. The funeral services were solemn and impressive.
