Southern Californian SATURDAY APRIL 26, 1873 ODDS AND ENDS. R. D. Bogart has been remanded to the custody of the Naval authorities, and will be tried immediately for desertion and embezzlement. Epizootic is steadily increasing in San Francisco and Oakland. Henry Ward Beecher prayed God to remember in mercy the Indians of the forest whose peat up wrongs had driven him to bloodshed and diabolical murder. A gentleman of San Francisco, calling himself "a practical embalmer," has written to General Schofield, requesting "in the cause of science, and with a desire to gratify the curiosity of the people, the privilege of embalming and bringing to this city the bodies of the Modoc, Captain Jack, John Sconcein, Boston Charley, and Hooka Jim, in the event of their being captured and executed or killed by the troops." He was thoughtful enough to enclose a stamped envelope for the reply. The wheat crop in the San Joaquin valley is looking very badly, and nothing but a copious supply of rain can save it. Modoc News. San Francisco, April 19.—The cave to which it is supposed the Modoes have retreated is six miles from the lava bed, and is more difficult of approach and affords greater protection from shells, and is amply supplied with wood and grazing facilities. Between the two places are a great many small caverns and crevices, but no water within half a mile. It is necessary to make a circuit of forty miles to get the artillery and supplies to the new stronghold. It is believed that the Indians are short of provisions and ammunition and are evidently demoralized. A dispatch from Yreka, dated April 20th, says: A cutler arrived yesterday from the Lava Beds. He says the Indians have not left the caves. Colonel Perry's cavalry started at 6 o'clock Friday morning for the south side of the Lava Bed, to cut the Modoes off from the springs. We glean the following Modoes news from the San Diego Union: Dispatches from Yreka state that the troops have occupied Captain Jack's cave in the center of the lava bed. The only Indian found was John Seconchin, who shot Meacham at the time of the massacre. The soldiers at once killed and scalped Seconchin. The rest of the band of murderers fled in a southeasterly direction. The cavalry are in hot pursuit. It is evident that the Indians have gone to another stronghold, about six miles distant from their late place of refuge, where they are believed to have a plentiful store of food and ammunition and no scarce of water. General Gillem telegraphs Schofield that no effort will be spared to exterminate the savages. He thinks it is impossible for the Indians to escape punishment long. Every settler is on the lookout for straggling Modoes, and the mortars make short work in shelling out the caves in which the Indians take refuge. At Crystal Creek, in Scott Valley the Klamath Indians are painted up and are having war dances. They are all well armed. San Francisco, April 22nd. There is no definite information as to the whereabouts of the Modoes. Some correspondents state that they have separated into squads of five or six. General Gillem telegraphs to headquarters that the bodies of thirteen Modoes have been found concealed in the caves and labyrinths in the Lava Bed. The cavalry and Warm Spring Indians are out hunting the Modoc trail. The death of John Scenchin, from the wound in the abdomen inflicted by Meacham during the massacre is confirmed. The surrounding country is greatly excited over the escape of the Modoes. We are hourly expecting to hear of the depredations on settlers. STABLE, Anaheim, MITCHELL, PROPRIETOR. ON STABLE. Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Pancy Drink made of Poor Rum, Whisky, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors, doctored, spiced, and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonics," "Appetizers," "Restorers," &c., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, made from the native roots and herbs of California, free from all Alcoholic Stimulants. They are the Great Blood Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect Renovator and Invigorator of the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refreshing and invigorating both mind and body. They are easy of administration, prompt in their action, certain in their results, safe and reliable in all forms of disease. No Person can take these Bitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, proviled their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair. Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eruptions of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Bilious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflammation of the Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. In these complaints it has no equal, and one bottle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. For Female Complaints, in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence that a marked improvement is soon perceptible. For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bulous, Remittent and Intermittent Fexers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Infammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs and in Billious Diseases. For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Teetter, Salt- A most Efficient and Pleasant Tonic. These Bitters are prepared from the most choices and wholesome herbs and roots, and have given universal satisfaction wherever tried. Thousands of dyspepties have found relief through their use, and physicians recommend them for the cure of all diseases of the blood and liver, and irregularities of the digestive organs. Headache, Billiousness, and Constipation General Debility and Loss of Appetite are all caused by the derangement of the Stomach, Liver and other functionaries of the system. The IXL Bitters have been successfully used and are warranted to alleviate the sufferer in all the above cases. The IXL Bitters are sold only in glass; to sell other than the genuine article out of our bottles is felony, and we will when detected, prosecute such parties to the full extent of the law. CERTIFICATES Messrs. H. EUSTEN & Co. Gentlemen: I take pleasure in stating that agreeably to your wish I have carefully tested and examined the sample of your IXL Bitters, which you self me, and find it not only agreeable Bitters, but also some that cannot fail be beneficial as a tonic and promoter of Digestion. O. HOLLAND, M.D. CITY AND COUNTY HOSPITAL San Francisco, June 20th, 1871. I have carefully examined Dr. Henley's IXL Bitters, and have failed to detect anything which could injure even the most delicate constitution. From the composition of the Bitters, as far as I am able to determine it, I should judge that the IXL Bitters must be a very efficient remedy in Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Loss of Appetite and similar complaints being composed of a number of vegetable drugs which are principally used in diseases of that nature, and are of the greatest efficacy in their cure. F. H. ENGLES, M.D. Ass't Res. Physician Apothecary C. & C Hospital symptoms, are the offsprings of Dyspepsia. In these complaints it has no equal, and one bottle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Fewers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitilated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonic, possessing also the peculiar motif of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Inflammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs and in Bilious Diseases. For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetter, Salt-Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring-worms, Scalp-Head, Sore Eyes, Erysipelas, Itch, Scurfs, Discolorations of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out of the system in a short time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such cases will convince the most incredulous of their curative effects. Cleanse the Villated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sores; cleanse it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when. Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow. Grateful Thousands proclaim VINEGAR Bitters the most wonderful invigorant that ever sustained the shaking system. Pin, Tape, and other Worms, lurking in the system of so many thousands, are effectively destroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist: There is scarcely an individual on the face of the earth whose body is exempt from the presence of worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that worms exist upon the diseased humors and slimy deposits that breed these living monsters in disease. No system of medicine, no vermifuges, no anthelmintics, will free the system from worms like these Bitters. Mechanical Diseases—Persons engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Typesetors, Gold-bearers, and Miners, as they advance in life, are subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this, take a dose of WALKER'S VINEGAR Bitters twice a week. Billions, Remittent, and Intermittent Fevers, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red Colorado, Brazos, Rio Grande, Pearl, Alabama Mobile Savannah, Roanoke James, and many others with their vast tributaries throughout our entire country during the Summer and Autumn and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness are invariably accompanied by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal viscera. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon these various organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose due to Dr. J. WALKER'S VINEGAR Bitters, as they will speedily remove the dark-colored violet matter with which the bowels are loaded at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs. Scrofula, or King's Evil, White Swellings, Ulcers, Erysipelas, Swelled Neck, Goatre, Serofolous Inflammations, Indolent Inflammations, Mercurial Affections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes, etc., In these as in all other constitutional Diseases. WALKER'S VINEGAR Bitters have shown their great curative powers in the most obstinate and intractable cases. Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the inflammation (the tubercular deposits) the affected parts receive health, and a permanent cure is effected. The properties of Dr. WALKER'S VINEGAR Bitters are Apertient, Diaphoretic, Carminative Nutritious, Laxative, Dietetic, Counter-Irritant, Sudorific Alterative, and Anti-Billions. The Apertinent and mild Laxative properties of Dr. WALKER'S VINEGAR Bitters are the best safe-guard in cases of eruptions and malignant fevers. Diuretic, Sedative, Counter-Irritant, Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Billions. The Apterent and mild Laxative properties of Dr. WALKEE's VINEGAR BITTERS are the best safeguard in cases of eruptions and malignant fevers. Their balsamic, healing, and soothing properties protect the humors of the fauces. Their Sedative properties allay pain in the nervous system, stomach, and bowels, from inflammation, wind, colic, cramps, etc. Their Counter-Irritant influence extends throughout the system. Their Anti-Billeous properties stimulate the liver, in the secretion of bile, and its discharges through the biliary ducts, and are superior to all remedial agents, for the cure of Billious Fever, Fever and Ague, etc. Fortify the body against disease by purifying all its fluids with VINEGAR BITTERS. No epidemic can take hold of a system thus fore-armed. Directions—Take of the Bitters on going to bed at night from a half to one and one-half wine-glassful. Eat good nourishing food, such as beef-steak, mutton chop, venison, roast beef, and vegetables, and take out-door exercise. They are composed of purely vegetable ingredients, and contain no spirit.
