RESULT OF THE PEACE POLICY. Particulars of the Modoc Outrage. From the Evening Express: Yreka, April 11.—Yesterday the Peace Commission sent a message to Capt. Jack, asking for a talk this morning, at a point about a mile from our picket line. The meeting was agreed to by the Indians, General Canby, Dr. Thomas, A. B. Meacham and Mr. Dyer, with Frank Riddle and his squaw as interpreters, started for the place appointed. The party arrived at the appointed place, and were closely watched by the signal officer, Lieut. Adams, from the signal station on the hill overlooking our camp. About half an hour after the party had arrived, a cry from the signal station was heard, saying that the Indians had attacked the Peace Commission. Shortly after Dyer and Riddle and his squaw returned and gave the following account of the treachery: Meacham told Captain Jack that they could not have what they wanted, and young Sconchin arose to reply. Captain Jack told Meacham he need not say any more; he had said enough. While Sconchin was speaking, Jack got up, stepped Shortly after Dyer and Riddle and his squaw returned and gave the following account of the treachery: "Meacham told Captain Jack that they could not have what they wanted, and young Sconchin arose to reply. Captain Jack told Meacham he need not say any more; he had said enough. While Sconchin was speaking, Jack got up, stepped behind the rest and said, 'All ready!' snapping his pistol at General Canby. He cocked it again and fired, hitting General Canby under the right eye, killing him instantly. Mr. Thomas was next shot dead. Meacham was shot through the shoulder and head, and is not expected to recover." While General Canby's party were en route to meet the Modocs, Riddle, the interpreter, advised the Commissioners that there was danger ahead. His advice was disregarded. Captain Jack, Sconchin and six others composed the Indian party. Meacham first spoke, followed by Thomas and Canby; Jack then spoke, followed by Sconchin. While the latter was speaking, Jack shot the General, the ball entering beneath the left eye and killing him instantly. Boston Charley and another Indian killed Thomas, and Sconchin wounded Meacham so seriously that he cannot survive. The troops will move forward at once. Lava Bed, April 12.—An attack was made on Colonel Mason's command, yesterday, at the same time as the assassination of Canby. It was a portion of the Modoc program to kill all the commanding officers. The Indians appeared in front with a flag of truce, and Lieut. Sherwood, the officer of the day, accompanied by Lieut. Boyle, went to see the nature of it. They were fired upon, and Lieut. Boyle was badly wounded. The troops double-quicked five hundred yards and rescued both officers. Areka, March 13.—Tae bodies of General Canby and Dr. Thomas arrived here yesterday. Kreka, March 13.—The bodies of General Canby and Dr. Thomas arrived here yesterday. The former will be sent to Indianapolis. The remains of Dr. Thomas are en route to San Francisco. The most intense excitement has prevailed here to-day, and at Jacksonville Secretary Delano was burned in effigy, placarded "Make peace, if it takes all summer." Washington, April 13. Gen. Schofield, Commanding, etc. Your dispatch of yesterday was received last night. At midnight, Adjutant General Townsend came to my house with a telegram from General Gillem of the same tenor as yours, which dispatch he had shown to the President. I answered General Gillem direct, with a copy of this answer to you. The President now sanctions the most severe punishment of the Mo-does, and I expect to hear that they have met the doom that they so richly merit by their insolence and perfidy. Consult Mrs. Canby and have every honor paid to the remains of General Canby. I will see the President and notify you of any changes in the existing command, it made; but you may be sure that any measures of severity to the savages will be sustained. W. T. Sherman. Vinegar Bitters are not a vile Pancy Drink made of Poor Bum, Whiskey, Proof Spirits and Refuse Liquors, doctored, spiced, and sweetened to please the taste, called "Tonica," "Appetiters," "Restorers," &c., that lead the tippler on to drunkenness and ruin, but are a true Medicine, made from the native roots and herbs of California, free from all Alcoholic Stimulants. They are the Great Blood Purifier and a Life-giving Principle, a Perfect Renovator and Invigrator of the System, carrying off all poisonous matter and restoring the blood to a healthy condition, enriching it, refreshing and invigorating both mind and body. They are easy of administration, prompt in their action, certain in their results, safe and reliable in all forms of disease. No Person can take these Bitters according to directions, and remain long unwell, provided their bones are not destroyed by mineral poison or other means, and the vital organs wasted beyond the point of repair. Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Headache, Pain in the Shoulders, Coughs, Tightness of the Chest, Dizziness, Sour Eructations of the Stomach, Bad Taste in the Mouth, Billious Attacks, Palpitation of the Heart, Inflammation of the Lungs, Pain in the region of the Kidneys, and a hundred other painful symptoms, are the omnipresence of Dyspepsia. In these complaints it has no equal, and one bottle will prove a better guarantee of its merits than a lengthy advertisement. For Female Complaints, in young or old, married or single, at the dawn of womanhood, or the turn of life, these Tonic Bitters display so decided an influence that a marked improvement is soon perceptible. For Inflammatory and Chronic Rheumatism and Gout, Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Bilious, Remittent and Intermittent Fevers, Diseases of the Blood, Liver, Kidneys and Bladder, these Bitters have been most successful. Such Diseases are caused by Vitiated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a Tonicle, possessing also the peculiar merit of acting as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Infammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs and in Billious Diseases. For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetters, Salt-Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Sore Knees A most efficient and Pleasant Tomato. Three Bitters are prepared from the most choices and wholesome herbs and roots, and have given universal satisfaction wherever tried. Thousands of dyspeptics have found relief through their use; and physicians recommend them for the cure of all diseases of the blood and liver, and irregularities of the digestive organs. Headaches, Billiousness, and Constipation. General Debility and Loss of Appetite are all caused by the derangement of the Stomach, Liver and other functionaries of the system. The IX.L bitters have been successfully used and are warranted to alleviate the sufferer in all the above cases. The IX.L Bitters are sold only in glass; to sell other than the genuine article out of our bottles is felony, and we will, when detected, prosecute such parties to the full extent of the law. CERTIFICATES. Messrs. H. Einstein & Co. Gentlemen: I take pleasure in stating that agreeably to your wish I have carefully tested and examined the sample of your IX.L Bitters, which you sent me, and find it not only an agreeable Bitters, but also one that cannot be beneficial as a tonic and promoter of Digestion. G. HOLLAND, M.D. CITY AND COUNTY HOSPITAL, San Francisco June 20th, 1871. I have carefully examined Dr. Henley's IX.L Bitters, and have failed to detect anything which could injure even the most delicate constitution. From this composition of the Bitters, as far as I am able to determine it I should judge that the IX.L Bitters must be a very efficient remedy in Dyspepsia, Indigestion, Loss of Appetite and similar complaints being composed of a number of vegetable drugs which are principally used in diseases of that nature, and are of the greatest efficacy in their cure. P. II. ENGLES. M.D. Ass't Res. Physician Apothecary C. & C Hospital. STATE ASSAYER'S OFFICE. SAN FRANCISCO JULY 31st, 1871. Such Diseases are caused by Vitilated Blood, which is generally produced by derangement of the Digestive Organs. They are a Gentle Purgative as well as a powerful agent in relieving Congestion or Infammation of the Liver and Visceral Organs and in Billious Diseases. For Skin Diseases, Eruptions, Tetters, Salt-Rheum, Blotches, Spots, Pimples, Pustules, Boils, Carbuncles, Ring-worms, Scald-Head, Sores, Erysipelas, Scalds, Scarrings of the Skin, Humors and Diseases of the Skin, of whatever name or nature, are literally dug up and carried out of the system in a short time by those of these Bitters. One bottle in such cases will convince the most ineradiculous of their curative effects. Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its impurities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Eruptions, or Sorries; clean it when you find it obstructed and sluggish in the veins; clean it when it is foul; your feelings will tell you when Keep the blood pure, and the health of the system will follow. Grateful Thousands proclaim Vinegar Bitters the most wonderful Invigorant that ever sustained the sinking system. Pin, Tape, and other Worms, inking in the system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed and removed. Says a distinguished physiologist: There is scarcely an individual on the face of the earth whose body is exempt from the presence of worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humour and silky deposits that breed these living monsters of disease. No system of medicine, no vermifuges, no anthelmintics, will free the system from worms like these Bitters. Mechanical Diseases—Persons engaged in Paints and Minerals, such as Plumbers, Type-setters, Gold-bearers, and Miners, as they advance in life, are subject to paralysis of the Bowels. To guard against this, take a dose of Walker's VINEGAR Bitters twice a week. Billous, Remittent, and Intermittent Fevera, which are so prevalent in the valleys of our great rivers throughout the United States, especially those of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Cumberland, Arkansas, Red Colorado, Brazos, Rio Granule, Pearl, Alabama Mobile, Savannah, Roanoke, James, and many others with their vast tributaries throughout our entire country during the Summer and Autumn, and remarkably so during seasons of unusual heat and dryness, are invariably accompanied by extensive derangements of the stomach and liver, and other abdominal viscera. In their treatment, a purgative, exerting a powerful influence upon those various organs, is essentially necessary. There is no cathartic for the purpose equal to Dr. J. Walker's Vinegar Bitters, as they will specially remove the dark-colored viscous matter with which the bowels are loaded; at the same time stimulating the secretions of the liver, and generally restoring the healthy functions of the digestive organs. Scrofaula, or King's Evil, White Swellings, Ursens, Erysipelae, Swelled Neck, Gottre, Scrofolous Inflammations, Indential Inflammations, Mercurial Affections, Old Sores, Eruptions of the Skin, Sore Eyes etc., etc. In these as in all other constitutional diseases, Walker's Vinegar Bitters have shown their great curative powers in the most obstinate and intractable cases. Dr. Walker's California Vinegar Bitters act on all these cases in a similar manner. By purifying the Blood they remove the cause, and by resolving away the effects of the inflammation (the tubercular deposits) the affected parts receive health and a permanent cure is effected. The properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are Aperient, Diaphoretic, Carminative Nutritious, Laxative, Dinetic, Sedative Counter-Irritant, Sudorific, Alterative, and Anti-Billious. The Aperient and mild Laxative properties of Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitters are the best safe-guard in cases of eruptions and malignant fevers. Their balsamic healing and soothing properties protect the humors of the faeces. Their sedative properties allay pain in the nervous system, stomach, and bowels from inflammation wind, collec, cramps, etc. Their Counter-Irritant influence extends throughout the system. Their Anti-Billious properties stimulate the liver in the secretion of bile, and its discharges through the biliary ducts and are superior to all remedial agents for the cure of Billious Fever, Fever and Ague, etc. Fortify the body against disease by purifying all its fluids with Vinegar Bitters. No epidemic can take hold of a system thus fore-armed. Direction: Take of The Infection on going bed at night from a half and one-half wineglass.
