The town of Anaheim near the Santa Ana river, and principal towns in Southwest It is twelve miles from thirty miles from Los Angeles five hundred miles from San Francisco. It was first commenced by a group of Germans, about twenty in twelve years ago. They purchased thousand acres of land and entire tract with a fence, then into lots of twenty acres each village site, which was laid acre lots. Each member wore a village, also a twenty-acre twenty acres there was eight and facilities for irrigation. Had been done by the company drew cuts for the location early. Since that time the plan along in the way of prosperity. The streets are clean and clean, running at right angles dwellings are neat and comfortable yards and gardens are tastful and kept in nice order. The good hotels, two good schools registered, and an attendance of 100. They have business houses and many large goods, with a very good branches. They support a Southern California Richard Melrose publisher and assisted by Capt. Knox; whole souled, warm hearted drove a quill. I am pleased with their efforts in the newspaper appreciated by the citizens. I am indebted for much information many favors. Anaheim is just its fine vineyards, its product its delightful climate. Like places in southern California sometimes suffered from drought materially since 1864. They good system of irrigation at they are trying to improve in wells, which if successful the effects of a drought outfit.
The climate of Southern probably unsurpassed by any in the world. Along the coast there is bracing and pleasant the cold, raw air we get from in the Eastern States, and as toward the foot-hills and moun

ANAHEIM, CAL., March 1st, 1873.
FRIEND OLIVERS.—Having in times past heard much talk about Anaheim and its vine, a curiosity seized me to visit the famous town, and learn from observation that I could never learn otherwise. On the invitation of a friend a few days since took a ride across the country to this famous town. I found the view of the countryside and the scenery along the road more than repaid the trouble of the journey. We passed through some of the finest country I have ever yet seen in this State. Although no part of it is cultivated, it is very productive. It is wholly used for estorage, and such immense herds of cattle and bands of sheep and horses I ever saw before. On a single ranch there are fifty four thousand sheep and several thousand cattle with room and feed for them. This valley is one of the finest acts of land in this State. It is well watered, having four rivers running across from north to south; taking their rise in interior of the State, they have caught down and deposited a rich soil, which is adapted to any crop, or for grazing. The town of Anaheim is situated on the Santa Ana river, and is one of the growth of nearly every kind of crops. All kinds of fruits and nuts and all kinds of grain, except wheat, does well here. For fruits they raise pears, peaches, apricots, nectarine, figs, olives, apples, walnuts, oranges, lemons, limes, and other varieties of semi-tropical fruits. The principal crops of grain are corn and rye, which grows luxurious and yields abundantly. The former frequently yielding 140 bushels per acre. Cotton is a good crop here. I have before me now some fine specimens of cotton balls, and it is said that they get two or three crops from one planting. I have also been shown some fine samples of the ramie plant grown here.
The land in this vicinity is being bought up by eastern parties and set to grapes. Some 200,000 vines were set last season, and it is estimated that twice that number will be set this season. One thing is much needed here, railroad communication with the rest of the world, and there is a good prospect of that want being supplied. This town now numbers about 800 inhabitants, mostly Americans, but like all California towns has some foreigners.
We shall return to Los Angeles in a few days. where we intend to remain a few weeks longer. We find this climate is quite beneficial to us.
Pre-Emptors' and Listed School Lands.
DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,
GENERAL LAND OFFICE,
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 18th, 1872.
REGISTER LAND OFFICE, Los Angeles,
Cal.—Sir: In examining your returns of land sales, pre-emption filings, etc., for the month of November last, it is observed that you have actually allowed entries to be made, under the Homestead Act, on lands which had, long prior to the date of settlement, as claimed by the pre-emptors, or of the date of the Homestead applications, been selected by the State as indemnity for deficiencies in school lands, and which were shown by your records to have been so selected. This is directly contrary to your instructions, and proves conclusively either that you do not read the instructions received from this office, or that you pay no attention to them. The circular from this office, of January 5th, 1872—copy herewith enclosed—expressly states that "when such selections are filed, you will enter them on your records, report them in the usual manner, and allow no further disposition of the tracts, except in cases of prior pre-emptors, or instructions from the office." Yet, notwithstanding these instructions, you have permitted parties to file on lands which have been selected by the State, when by your own showing, the parties filing do not claim settlement until long subsequent to the date of the selections. This practice causes unnecessary trouble and must be discontinued, and you are hereby directed to at once notify all parties whose filings and homestead entries, in Townships 2 and 3, of ranges 13 and 14 west, San Bernardino Meridean, bear date subsequent to the State selections in these Townships that...
the climate of Southern California is rarely unsurpassed by any climate in the world. Along the coast the atmosphere is bracing and pleasant, never like cold, raw air we get from our lakes, or the Eastern States, and as you advance the foot-hills and mountains the becomes dryer and more agreeable. By mile you travel from the coast you notice a perceptible difference in the temperature. It becomes dryer and lighten you approach the interior. This lit-town is becoming quite a resort for kids. I find here quite a number of earn people, who have tried various dates and places for relief from pulmocomplaints all to little or no purpose. Early every one of them are improveme, and they all speak highly of their ideal and healthy climate.
The temperature is very even here, there generally no more than sixty degrees between summer and winter. And generous personage the oldest infant," informed me that 28 degrees lowest the thermometer has ever to indicate in this place. The vinehere are considered the finest and productive of any in the State, also the less manual labor to keep them in order.
There are in this settlement 884 acres of vines upon which there was growing near 783,000 vines from which there manufactured 500,000 gallons of wine every season the yield would be much higher. The frost in April injured some vines so that they did not yield the amount. I find some vineyards, the vines were not bitten by Mr. frost, yielded one and one-third gal-ler vine. Last season being the first frost has even injured the vines, don't anticipate a recurrence. This mild climate appears to be adapted to the office." Yet, notwithstanding these instructions, you have permitted parties to file on lands which have been selected by the State, when by your own showing, the parties filing do not claim settlement until long subsequent to the date of the selections. This practice causes unnecessary trouble and must be discontinued, and you are hereby directed to at once notify all parties whose filings and homestead entries, in Townships 2 and 3, of ranges 13 and 14 west, San Bernardino Meridean, bear date subsequent to the State selections in these Townships, that the same are invalid, and will not be considered by this office.
You will please acknowledge the receipt of this letter.
Very respectfully, your obedient serv't,
WILLIS DRUMMOND, Commissioner.
Anaheim Vineyards.
Anaheim has already an established reputation as a vinicultural section. The name is as familiar in New York as in Southern California. The vineyards stretch endlessly on every hand. A well kept vineyard is a thing of beauty. The rows are planted five or six feet apart and are kept with great care. The regularity with which the grape is planted, and the conscientious attention bestowed upon the vineyards, give the fields around Anaheim a deliciously pretty and cultured appearance.
Anaheim is the nucleus around which are gathered multitudes of attractive homes. From a casual glance, we should judge that there are few very wealthy, and as few very poor people, in Anaheim. A studied effort is made to ornament even the humblest homesteads, and with marked success. Devotion to beauty and to flowers is always accepted as a gauge of refinement. Judged by this standard, the people of Anaheim are not airpassed on the American continent.
The hotels and other public buildings in Anaheim, are of a very creditable description. The town supports two livery stables, and has every appliance of comfort. As we entered, the settlement was being flooded by the irrigating ditches. — San Diego World.
