An Association has been formed by the Memento Farmers' Club in order to co-ordinate in the manufacture of wines and cakes. The following extract from the writings of the Club of March 22d, gives some idea of the intended work of the society. Adams, Chairman of the Committee to whom the above subject was referred, made the following report: Committee: The Committee to solicit lots of land and money for the local contempled co-operative would report that Mr. F. On board this remarkable man-of-war there are no less than thirty-four distinct and separate engines, and, indeed, the value which she represents is as serious as her fighting capacity. What remains to be learned is the behavior of the ugly giant in a real Biscay gale, and whether or not the cul-de-sac which she carries ast will or will not prove a mistake in a heavy flowing sea. With stability assured to fifty-five degrees, with no top gear to set her over, and with decks which can be hermetically sealed, she would be safe enough; but whenever she does roll, or pitch, or scud, the rivets and fittings in her huge body will be thoroughly tried. In September last we brought to the notice of the readers of the Press that Rosse & Grant, nurserymen at Topeka, Kansas, had introduced the Persian walnut, a nut about a half larger than the English walnut, with very rich meat and shell nearly as thin as paper. We have obtained further information in regard to this nut, to the effect that, the tree usually comes into bearing the seventh year from the planting of the seed. The tree is perfectly hardy south of 429 north Having a tap-root which descends deep into the earth, it is not liable to be affected by the drouth and needs no irrigation. The tree at ten years old generally attains a height of 30 or 40 feet, with a head spreading out 25 feet in diameter. The tree grows slowly until the fourth year, then grows with great rapidity. A sandy loam is probably the best, although it makes but little difference with them; they seem to grow well on all kinds of soil. Undoubtedly this is by all odds the best dessert walnut grown. They should be planted when they are one year old. The nuts are germinated with great difficulty, only about one in twenty of them sprouting. They have beautiful foliage, and make a very ornamental tree. Mr. Finch of Alameda ordered from Messrs. Rosse & Grant 50 of these one-year old trees and obtained only 36; of these he has sold at $10 each to Mr. Latham 10 trees; to Mr. Selby 2; to J. D. Roberts 4 and to Win Meeks of Alameda 12. The entire stock of these trees—of the Messrs. Rosse & Grant is disposed of except twenty-four year old trees, which are not for sale. We deem their introduction a valuable acquisition to the list of California nut-bearing trees. Senator Sabgent has procured at the botanical garden and sent to the Secretary of the State Agricultural Society, to several farmers and to leading agriculturists and florists in different parts of the State, a new plant called the rice paper plant of China This plant grows in the deep, swampy forests of the Island of Formosa, and apparently there only forming a small tree, branching in the upper part. The stems are filled with pith of a very fine A Marine Monster. This plant grows in the deep, swampy forests of the Island of Formosa, and apparently there only forming a small tree, branching in the upper part. The stems are filled with pith of a very fine texture and white as snow, which, when cut, forms the article known as rice paper. Large quantities of the stems are taken in native crafts from Formosa to China where they are cut into thin sheets for the manufacture of artificial flowers. These flowers are largely imported from China. If experiment shows that this plant will thrive in California, the flowers can be made by the Chinese in the State. Sacramento Record. FLOUR WITHOUT MILLSTONES. A machine for making flour without the use of millstones, has just been started in England. The grain is crushed by one thousand little trip hammers attached to the proper machinery to produce the result desired. The new machinery is very cheap and does up its work in a scientific manner. The flour produced is said to be far superior to that obtained by grinding. A pounding mill costing $1,000 will produce as much flour every day as an old fashioned mill, costing five thousand. The new mill is very simple. When a hammer is out of order you can replace the same or a few cents. For four thousand years millers have produced flour by grinding the grain with stones. The new idea gives a new departure. What results it will produce in this country remain to be seen. California Agriculturist. THE Greeley (Colorado) Tribune asserts that at times the singing of the Rocky Mountain turkey is "really beautiful." Probably when the listener is uncommonly hungry.
