Southern Californian SATURDAY ... MAR 8, 1873 (Continued from first page.) able apologies for horses are retailed to the unsuspecting new comer for from $20 to $50. A good riding and driving horse costs fully as much here as elsewhere. The great fault of the place, however, is its lack of amusements sufficient to keep the average invalid contented to remain. To be sure, one can at any time secure a mustang pony, but the probabilities are that if the animal does not "buck," he will be endowed with some other objectionable accomplishment. It is freqently the case, moreover, that horseback riding is overdone by those who adopt this method of exercise; and some have been permanently injured by this means. I suppose that boating could be brought into favor, but as there is only an open road-tead in front of the town, it does not seem to be at all in vogue. The traveler is told of hunting and fishing grounds in the mountains some twenty miles distant. These, however, are not available for invalids. A Practical Farmers' Movement. The Farmers' Club of Stanislaus county some weeks ago appointed a committee to ascertain the best terms on which they can procure for the members of the club their supply of grain sacks, the 'coming A Practical Farmers' Movement. The Farmers' Club of Stanislaus county some weeks ago appointed a committee to ascertain the best terms on which they can procure for the members of the club their supply of grain sacks the 'coming season. The order represented by the committee was a very large one, and the farmers justly reasoned that it would command competition among the importing merchants. The committee have made a report of their action. They secured the refusal of 80,000 sacks on the way from Liverpool to San Francisco at a very low price. These are second-hand sacks, in which California wheat has already made one passage, but guaranteed in good merchantable condition. We quote: "And further your committee would state that they soon expect to be able to announce, per cable dispatch, as to the price of wheat sacks, an agent having gone to headquarters to engage not only for our club, but for all the clubs of the State, that will report to the Secretary of the State Farmers' Union, and the commissions of the same will scarcely be worth counting, as he seeks to have every sack returned to him full of grain for shipment by his chartered vessels." The committee recommended that the sacks shall be offered in this township to all such as are or will become members of the club, and that notes of hand be taken for the number ordered or "subscribed for" by each member, payable on condition that the same be landed at San Francisco in good order and merchantable condition, as per contract of sale.—Sec.
