Southern Californian GEO. C KNOX, EDITOR. SATURDAY ... FEB. 22, 1876 L. P. FISHER. 20 and 21 New Merchants' Exchange, is our authorized Agent in San Francisco. Major Max. Strobel. IN MEMORIAM. SAN DIEGO, Feb. 18th, 1878. A. LANGENEERGER: — Our poor friend Strobel died in London yesterday. He was attended by my old friend Thompson of La Paz. JOHN FORSTER. Max. Frantz Otto Strobel was born at Munich, Bavaria, on the 1st day of February, 1826, of Roman Catholic parents. He was educated for a soldier, and at the commencement of the troubles in Germany, in 1818, was serving as a lieutenant in the Bavarian army. Imbed with the love of liberty during his student life, he cast his fortunes with the Liberal party and, after their defeat, was exiled from his country. After living a short time in England, he went to Canada, in the service of the English government, and thence to Washington City. Whilst in the draughting department of the U.S. Coast Survey at Washington, he made the acquaintance of John C. Fremont, and acquired his confidence in a high degree. He came to California with Fremont on his second trip across the plains, and was subsequently placed by him in full charge of his mining interests on the Mariposa grant. Afterwards, returning to the States, he joined as a member of the staff the Walker expedition, which was ended by the defeat of the Americans at Grenada. A second time an exile, he made his way again to California, and resuming his profession of civil engineering, was engaged for a number of years in connection with Levi Parsons of New York and others in developing the New England army poured out their blood to preserve the homes and fires in the Carolinas, the South should imbittered feelings against their demands. Remembering that Virginia to the common cause a Washington North should obliterate from its pessimisms which so long disturb harmony of the States. That the received in that fratricidal contest commenced to heal, we are glad to have trust, ere the year rolls by, to two sections of the Great Republic united as when in common grief, the representatives stood beside the great Washington. A second time an exile, he made his way again to California, and resuming his profession of civil engineering, was engaged for a number of years in connection with Levi Parsons of New York and others, in developing the mineral wealth of this portion of the State. In 1865 he came to Anaheim, where he has since resided. Five months ago he was sent to Europe, in order to effect the sale of the island of Santa Catalina, a valuable mineral deposit lying off San Pedro bay, and it was whilst engaged in completing his negotiations that he received the inevitable summons which must come to all. Concerning his last hours we have no information, further than the brief telegram which announced his death. We only know that in a foreign land, far from the friends of his maturer years, he was stricken by the icy hand of death, and we give to realize that around his dying couch to dear ones watched to smooth, with loving hand, his pathway to the grave; that, as his eyes looked their last of earth, there was with him— No voice well known through many a day, To speak the last—the pritting cry, Which, when all other sounds decay, Is still like distant music heard. That tender farewell on the shore Of this rule world, when all is older, Which cheersthe spirit, or its bark Puts off into the unknown dark. Major Strobel was of a singular nervous temperament, but with all his faculties under the most complete self-control. Pessessing an indescribable charm of manner, he impressed favorably and irresistibly attracted every one with whom he was brought in contact. peculiarly unfortunate during his later years, his energies never slackened under the weight of misfortune. Through all the dark clouds which at times lowered around him, he could ever see the silver-lining. The implicit confidence with which he believed in his ultimate success impelled him, undismayed by temporary misfortune, to press ever forward; but just as the fruition of his hopes was plainly in view; just as with a victor's hand he reached forth to grasp the prize for which he had so long and earnestly striven, the dread flat came and as life gave way, he realized for the first time the impossible. A most loving and affectionate father, he was ever regarded by his children as a kind and sympathizing companion. A warm friend to his friends, his many sterling qualities of mind and heart commanded their respect, and involuntarily drew towards him their love. A warm friend to his friends, his many sturdy qualities of mind and heart commanded their respect, and involuntarily drew towards him their love. Deeply interested in the growth and welfare of the section in which he resided, no public enterprise was entertained without his sanction and active participation. We, who knew him most intimately for nearly five years, and for whom a place was always especially reserved by the family fireside, feel that words can but feebly express the silent victues of the man. With fall heart and silent lips, we can but briefly express the poignant grief experienced by the entire community at the sudden loss of its most valued citizen, and whilst sympathizing with his loved ones in this their reallife tion, breathe the conviction that the stormclouds, against which he so manfully battled, have at length lifted and that though he lies far removed both from the associates of his youth and the loved friends of his manhood— "After life's fitful fever he sleeps well." The Anniversary of Washington's Birthday. To-day, throughout the entire length and breadth of the United States, all unite in commemorating the anniversary of the natal day of George Washington, the soldier and the statesman. Although nearly a century has elapsed since, covered with honors, he retired from public life and resumed his place as a private citizen of the Great Republic, the memory of his many services in the cause of Liberty is still as green in the hearts of his countrymen as when they gave to him their proudest title of nobility—The Father of His Country.
