Southern Californian SATURDAY, FEB. 8, 1873 ANAHEIM POST-OFFICE. Corner Center and Lemon streets—Wm. M Higgins, P.M. Office hours, 8 A.M.-until 8 P.M. Northern Mail—Arrives d'ly, (Sund's ex.) 12 M. "Closes," (Mond's.,) 12 M. Southern," Arrives," (), 9 A.M. "Closes," (Sund's.,) 9 P.M. SUBSCRIPTIONS—for the ensuing year are now due. We would respectfully request our patrons to be prompt in their payments. RICHARD MELROSE. SPECIAL NOTICE. Mr, E. A. Pullen is authorised to collect all moneys due the Southern California. RICHARD MELROSE. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Another Robbery. The saloon and restaurant on Los Angeles street, generally known as "Old George's," has the reputation of being a hard place. There is no doubt of it. Any one who is unfortunate enough to live in its immediate vicinity, and been kept "awake o'nights" by the pandemic of sounds issuing from it, will endorse us when we emphatically repeat that it is a very hard place. A few weeks ago we chronicled the robbery of a sum of money from the drawer of the saloon, and now we have another to record, a young man by the name of Blick, Bleeque Social Party.—We are informed that on Wednesday evening last, a number of ladies and gentlemen met at the residence of Mr. W. J. Smith, about three miles from Anaheim, and spent an enjoyable evening in tripping the light fantastic. Our informant, who is noted for his gastronomic abilities, grew especially enthusiastic over the supper, prepared by the Misses Smith, which he pronounced "muy bueno." Supervisors.—The Board met last Tuesday. Gen J. M. Baldwin and Mr. J. M. Riley, in conjunction with the Board, were selected to examine two county bridges, now completed. A communication from Mr. D. Botiller, County Assessor, in relation to the appointment and pay of deputies, was laid over till the March meeting. At the session on Wednesday morning a number of bills were examined. Day Fixed.—The suit of J. Fischer, Administrator of the estate of Conrad Kuchel, deceased, vs. Ole Bergson, et al., will be tried on Feb. 25th, before jury. This suit will settle the title of one of the most valuable peices of property in Anaheim. Mail Service.—Postal agent, Barstow, has ordered letter mail service via Telegraph Stage Co.'s route. Parties sending letters by this route should mark via Tipton, particularly Eastern letters, as it doubt of it. Any one who is unfortunate enough to live in its immediate vicinity, and been kept "awake o'nights" by the pandemic of sounds issuing from it, will endorse us when we emphatically repeat that it is a very hard place. A few weeks ago we chronicled the robbery of a sum of money from the drawer of the saloon, and now we have another to record, a young man by the name of Blick, Bleeque or Block, being the unfortunate victim. It seems that this Black-Bloke is a waiter in the restaurant above mentioned, and he had, by dint of great economy, contrived to save from his scant earnings, two hundred dollars, whien, for want of a better place, he deposited in his pillow case, where it lay undisturbed for several days. But last Thursday, on going to feast his eyes on his precious hoard, he discovered, with dismay, that some son of a — thief had stolen from his improvised bank one hundred dollars of his dearly prized money. We venture to assert that his thiefship was a green hand at the business; no "professional" would have left a hundred dollars behind. We wouldn't. VALUABLE INFORMATION. — We have received from Mr. Wm. R. Olden a circular, written by him, giving a "General Description and Character of Lands in Los Angeles county—The Stearn's Ranchos," with a description of its rivers, dairy lands, sugar, productions and profits of cultivation, harbors and road steads, transportation facilities, railroads, climate, land titles and prices." Accompanying the circular, is a Hygrometrical and Thermometrical record for the past seven months, prepared by Mr. Francis S. Miles. Any one desirous of procuring one of these circulars can do so, by calling on Mr. Olden at his office, in Anaheim. HOMES FOR THE PEOPLE. — We desire to call the especial attention of our readers to the liberal inducements held out by Messrs. Heimann and George, to those desirous of having a home in our beautiful town. Bergson, et al., will be tried on Feb. 25th, before jury. This suit will settle the title of one of the most valuable peices of property in Anaheim. MAIL SERVICE. — Postal agent, Barstow, has ordered letter mail service via Telegraph Stage Co.'s route. Parties sending letters by this route should mark via Tipton particularly Eastern letters, as it gives them the advantage of three days in time. PERSONAL. — Mr. Wm. Crowther of the firm of Crowther & Johnson left for Santa Clara last Monday. He will return in a few weeks, bringing his family with him. Dr. J. S. Gardiner and a couple of friends, have gone to the mountains for a hunting and prospecting tour. Allen Wilcox, Esq., of the Wilcox Steam Pump Company, arrived on the steamer Orizaba. He is on a business tour, and can be found at the Planter's Hotel. STRAIGHTENED. — When you go to Greety's to buy your peanuts, pause and admire the artistic way in which he straightened that fence. The sweat that rolled off that honest man's brow when he dug the post-holes gave rise to the idea that it rained last week. IMPROVEMENT. — Mr. Robt. Menzell, proprietor of the "City Bakery" has bought of Mrs. Carrillo, a lot on Los Angeles street, twenty-five feet front, for which he paid $300. He will erect a building within the next two months, to be used as a Bakery. ON DIT. — That we are going to have a marriage in Anaheim in a couple of weeks. It may be as well for us to state that we have splendid facilities for printing Wedding Cards—and a great fondness for cake. ILL USED. — John Kneip insured his residence, wine cellar, etc., about a year ago. The late rain totally destroyed his shed, and the Insurance Company will not make good Homes for the People.—We desire to call the especial attention of our readers to the liberal inducements held out by Messrs. Heimann and George, to those desirous of having a home in our beautiful town. The limited space originally devoted to building purposes by the founders of Anaheim, and the natural aversion of the vineyardists to cut up their lots for building purposes, have deterred many persons from building homes, because of their inability to procure a suitable location. Happily, this is now remedied, and we have no doubt but that another year will see many a beautiful home on vineyard lot C. 3. Ashore.—We see by the Express, that the three lighters of the Railroad Company went ashore at San Pedro. They were got off without serious damage. All the lighters at Santa Barbara went ashore. One of the lighters at Anaheim Landing was outside during the storm, but Providence and good management kept it from injury. Saddlery.—A visit to the harness and saddlery warehouse of Mr. S. C. Foy, in Los Angeles, will convince any one that his stock is the largest and best of any house, south of San Francisco. We invite attention to his ad, which will be found in another column. Ill Used.—John Kneip insured his residence, wine cellar, etc., about a year ago. The late rain totally destroyed his shed, and the Insurance Company will not make good his loss. Poor Kneip! treated badly by both God and man. Land Sale.—Cowan has sold to Dr. W. N. Hardin twenty acres of land, lying immediately west of Anaheim, for $1600. Dr. Hardin intends planting the whole tract in orange and lemon trees. Semi-Weekly.—La Cronica published in Los Angeles, has come out as a semi-weekly. It is handsome in appearance, ably edited and in every respect a "buena papelle" Tree Planting.—We counted during the past week. twenty-three wagons loaded with vine cuttings and every variety of Fruit trees, all to be set out by farmers around Anaheim. Change of Time.—The attention of our readers is called to the change in the advertisement of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company. Born. Near Anaheim, Feb. 5th, to the wife of Alexander Carpenter, a daughter. READ THIS.—The Southern Californian will be mailed to any address in the Eastern States for Three Dollars per Year, payable in advance. The Southern California and Pacific Rural Press, an agricultural paper of sixteen pages published weekly in San Francisco, will be furnished for $7 per year, payable in advance. RAFFLE—At Clark's book store, to-night, a handsome assortment of albums, musical instruments, gold pens, etc., etc., will be raffled off at cost price. We understand that on every Saturday similar raffles will be held. Now is your chance to obtain a handsome present with a very small outlay. RELIGIOUS NOTICE.—Services will be held in the Catholic Church by the Rev. Philip Farley on February 16th 1873. Green peas and every kind of spring vegetable on the bill of fare at the Challenge Restaurant. Corn and Barley taken in exchange for trees and vines, by J. W. Clark. SEEDS—Alfalfa and all kinds of fresh garden seeds can be had at Steinhart & Bros.*tf P. Davis & Bro. are prepared to make liberal cash advances on the "Spring Clip." See ad. Copies of the "CALIFORNIAN" put up in wrappers, for sale at Clark's. LETTERS FROM THE PEOPLE. [We would be much pleased to insert every week communications regarding subjects which are of general interest to our readers. Personal communications will be invariably rejected. School Matters, Present and Prospective. The thanks of the community are due to those public-spirited individuals who generously contributed shade trees to ornament our school grounds; and also to the energetic pupils who assisted the teacher to set them out. A few years hence, and we will be able to boast of our academic shades and arcadian groves, amid which the perepatetic philosopher may wander, discoursing of science to his listening followers; beneath which the school boy of the period may play marbles and swap jacknives; through the interstices of which the school girl may chase her playmate, in "hide-and-go-seek" or "pussy wants the corner;" whilst, sheltered by the evergreen foliage will sit, uncaged, "the love-chanting mocking bird and the golden-winged canary," singing their entrancing lays to the searchers after knowledge—to the swappers of jacknives, and to the seekers after corners. But to descend from the realms of Fancy to those of Fact, our present school rooms and school grounds are inadequate to the needs of our rapidly increasing juvenile population. But to descend from the realms of Fancy to those of Fact our present school rooms and school grounds are inadequate to the needs of our rapidly increasing juvenile population. Our monthly enrollment of 125 pupils exhaust the utmost capacities of our present school rooms There are several applicants now for whom there is neither seats nor house-room.The establishing of an Intermediate Department becomes an urgent necessity, and cannot be delayed longer than the beginning of the next school year.A third building upon our limited school grounds, and there will be scarcely standing room left to the small army of pupils who will daily muster there. I would respectfully suggest to our citizens that it would be well now while land is cheap,to secure a plat of four or five acres, farther away from the business portion of the town than our present site, the erect new school buildings on.This could be planted with shade trees, and ornamented with shrubbery now.In the course of two or three years when means will admit of it,and our increased population demands it,我们 could erect a large and tasty school house that, with its beautiful surroundings, would be both the pride and ornament of our town.J.M.Guinn.
