Anaheim as a Place of Residence for Invalids
In an article on "The sanitary resources of California" published in the Alta California Almanac for 1873, Anaheim is mentioned as one of three places in Southern California "which, though not unhealthy, are, on account of the large area of irrigated land, inferior to the dry towns.
By the courtesy of Mr. Francis S. Miles, we are enabled to lay before our readers a thermometrical record kept by him, showing the mean temperature in Anaheim of each day from July 1st 1872 to Jan. 28th 1873.
Mr. Miles, who has long been an invalid, has spent several years in travelling through Europe and the United States in search of a healthy location and has finally settled here, giving Anaheim the preference over ever Santa Barbara and San Diego, which are mentioned in the Alta article as the most healthy towns on the Pacific Coast.
EDITORIAL NOTES.
The bill abolishing the franc privilege has been passed by Congress and now awaits the sign of the President to become a law.
For years past the Postal system of the United States has been ably members of Congress and various officers of State, and consequence thereof, the difficult heads of the Department have variably been accused of conducting its operation in an unnecessary expensive and extravagant manner.
Simultaneously with the passage of the above bill, the telegraph announces the introduction of reducing the postage on letter two cents. Taken together these bills speak volumes.

Special interest the people pay in a fight between certain papers and the Telegraph Company although it is encouraging to that they have been victorious, have not yet decided which correctly states the causes have induced the Company to the reduction. It is sufficient know that a good move has been made. We are charitable enough to give the Company the benefit the doubt, and will therefor say their desire to benefit their profit has decided them to make the reduction "which they have for time contemplated."
There is a strong probability that hostilities may yet be indicated between England and Russia. The English note to Russia of the northern boundary of Afghanistan and further states that Emir of Afghanistan has repermission to fight the Russians they cross the line indicating replying, Russia, declaring its sure to preserve amicable relations with England, refuses to receive indicated boundary. The pro-Czar exhibits as firm a detection as his predecessor to call the manifest destiny of Russia unless England withdraws from position, war will undoubtedly declared.
Referring to the table, it will be seen that the extreme range between the minimum reading occurring in December, and the maximum reading in October, is 46°, which is the same as reported by Dr. Cole in San Diego. At no time is the difference between the minimum and mean temperature greater than...
