THE VINTAGE OF 1872.
A frost, occurring late, in the Spring of last year after the vines had commenced to put forth their leaves, damaged very materially, the crop of grapes. In view of the fact that 1872 was the most disastrous year that the vineyardists of Anaheim have yet experienced, we have prepared with much care the following table, showing the number of vines in the settlement, and their yield:

EDITORIAL NOTES.
The Paul Pry of the Chronicle suffered an unlimited amount of pity last week. Gov. Booth inclined the ear of mercy to the appeal made by the worthy citizens of San Francisco, and commuted the sentence passed on the murder Donovan to imprisonment for thereby depriving that enterprise sheet from depicting in all disgusting minutiae the dying moments of a criminal. In this lightened age, men of intelligence dislike to take life even in a legal manner. To condemn a felony being to appear before his Majesty unrepentant and without preparation, is assuming a grave responsibility from which every one naturally shrinks and which consequently gives an undue weight to the pleadings of the defence Possibly, if capital punishment abolished and life-imprisonment substituted, convictions in many cases could be more easily obtained.
"Anger is a short-lived madness So saith the old proverb and up to a few days ago, the final courts of the United States have decided. Realizing the possibility of convicting a person subject to periodical insanity."
Referring to the table it will be seen that the frost did not affect all the vine-yards equally. The average yield is about one and one-quarter gallons to the vine. The vine yards of Heiman & George and Mrs. Schnider were but very slightly touched, producing over one gallon to the vine, whilst the vineyards of Boldt, Fischer and Hartung, yielded only one-quarter of a gallon. The reason for this is probably to be found in the time of pruning. It is believed by many that the later the vines are pruned, the more vigorous and rapid will be the growth of grape-producing wood, and the earlier the grapes will mature. On this account many of the vineyardists defer the pruning season as long as possible. The vine takes a certain time to heal after being lopped of its branches, and consequently a late frost coming after a period of warm weather, would find those vineyards which were last prepared, less advanced and more subject to injury. However, a season like the last does not often occur. It is in reality beneficial to this section to have had such an unfavorable year, as the yield—500,000 gallons, or five-eighths of a gallon to the vine, proves conclusively that a total failure of the vintage need never be anticipated. The table shows only the vines

It is encouraging to find the faint glimmer of the true charm of the Indian has reached Washington. Secretary Delano in his annual report admits that the Indian is incorrigible and suggests that "the energies of the Department be devoted to the improvement of the rising generation." The Department leaves Gen. Cunnammeled for a short while er," its energies" will not be no very much.
There are in the city of York twelve men who believe a man can commit murder last Saturday Edward S. Saw was found "Guilty of murder in first degree." Three good would have saved Sotom and morrah from destruction. York possesses twelve We gratulate the citizens of that upon their narrow escape.

It is in reality beneficial to this section to have had such an unfavorable year, as the yield—500,000 gallons, or five-eighths of a gallon to the vine, proves conclusively that a total failure of the vintage need never be anticipated. The table shows only the vines growing within "the fence." Outside of this fence and in the immediate vicinity of town, there are over two hundred and fifty acres planted in vines which will bear grapes during the present year, so that we may safely estimate the vintage of 1873, with favorable seasons, at one and one-half million gallons of wine. Preparations are being made by the farmers in the vicinity, to set out between five and six hundred acres in vines of different kinds, but principally of the varieties suitable for table purposes. They evidently have an eye on the demand which will be made by the citizens of Arizona and Texas after the completion of the Texas Pacific Railroad.
There are twenty-one distilleries in Anaheim, and a large amount of Grape Brandy might be made every year. The tax on brandy, including fees of officers, is 76 cents per gallon making the real value in San Francisco 26 cents, from which must be deducted freight, commissions, &c. This leaves no margin to work upon, and in consequence there is no

It is gratifying to us, to see our endeavors to make the southern Californian readable are so appreciated. Since the change in management, between thirty forty numbers of each edition been sold and mailed to participating in the Eastern States. We added to our exchange list two lies, the World of San Diego the Evening Express of Los Angeles. The personal friendship existing between the Editor of the World ourselves has undoubtedly had influence with that paper, but courtesy extended to us by the press we must fain consider it plment. It is a compliment we very highly appreciate, as is no paper published South Francisco which contains so an amount of the Latest News so much interesting reading

"The brilliant sun rose slowly, and calmly seemed to say:
'This is a right I've never seen, before this blessed day!'
and it never bad. Every body stood around the corners of the streets and gasped wistfully at the closed doors of the whiskey saloons, where in the happy days by-gone they were wont to meet and sharpen their intellects by learning how to "set each other back." St. Bartholomew's day was rough on the French Protestants and the anniversary of Guy Fawkes' day was long sorrowfully kept by the English Catholics, but what were their sufferings compared to the agonies experienced by the worshippers of the Devil in observing, on the 4th day of January THE SUNDAY LAW
"Hope for a season," bids the world farewell,
And Freedom shrieks 'California Legislature go to
That bourne whence no traveler returns.'
(This is a poetic license.)
Words can not express their feelings and consequently Town Talk leaves the subject to the imagination of his readers. Something had to be done however to pass away the time. There being no scandal at present which required investigation, Town Talk and his assistant idlers, having exhausted in a few moments the subject of high taxes and having finally located the Texas Pacific between Fort Yuma and Anaheim, turned their undivided attention to

THE WEATHER
and have arrived at the following results: The country was saved by the timely rains in December; if we do not have another rain in ten days, the country is ruined: If chinamen are allowed to vote and white men are forbidden to drink whiskey on Sunday, what will be the advantage of living in a free country and where will the proud bird of freedom batch its future young?
