Southern California SATURDAY ... JAN. 4, 1873 ODDS AND ENDS! Subscription Books for the purchase of the Stock of the San Diego and San Bernardino Railroad are opened. Seventy six millions of dollars have been lost by fires in the United States, during 1871-72, not including Chicago and Boston. The Memphis, Pine Bluff and Shreveport Railroad Company, has been organized with Col. Thomas A. Scott as one of the directors. Col. Gray has taken charge of a division of the Texas Pacific Railway in Texas. The Texas Pacific has 15,000 men employed in its construction. A revolution is feared in the State of Tehuantepec, Mexico. A mine of lithographic stone, has been discovered in Rockbridge County, Virginia. The Mobile and Northwestern Railway are "busted". Liabilities, $680,000. Assets, $30,000. Louisiana ships bacon to England. San Bernardino is to have a new Hotel. Portland, Oregon has street cars. There are 5000 Mormons in Oneida Co., Idaho. The City of Jeddo, Japan contains 23,000 acres of land. A majority of the present Legislature of Vermont are Sons of Temperance. Poor Vermont! Louisiana ships bacon to England. San Bernardino is to have a new Hotel. Portland, Oregon has street cars. There are 5000 Mormons in Oneida Co., Idaho. The City of Jeddo, Japan contains 23,000 acres of land. The British Minister at St. Petersburg has notified Prince Gortschakoff, that the Russian troops must not enter Afghanistan. San Diego will have another bank, ing establishment. Bismuth has been discovered 200 miles south of Salt Lake City. Fire in Portland Oregon Loss $350,000. Severe earthquake shocks were felt in Oregon during December. The Steamer "Los Angeles" exploded her boilers at Wilmington last week. A young lady in Michigan, not eighteen, has two husbands living. To each one she has been married twice. Six thousand now novels published in France last year. Three thousand English joined the Mormons in 1872. Mosby, the guerilla, will marry a rich Philadelphia belle, this month. C. A. Bristed (Carl Benson) is the richest Bohemian in America. Two English Blondes and a Parisian Grisette, are inmates of the barem of the Shah of Peasia. Jas. Gordon Bennett has an income of $700,000. Helena, Arkansas, was almost entirely destroyed by fire on the 23d of December. A farmer in Stanislus County, has cultivated Coffee with success. A recent trip of the Steamship "Baltic" across the Atlantic, was made in 7 days 23 hours and 22 minutes.
