EXAMINATION OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF ANAHEIM.—We were compelled to omit a report of the proceedings at the school-house last week, for want of space. The examination of
THE PRIMARY SCHOOL
was held on Tuesday Dec. 16th. Classes in Reading, Mental Arithmetic, and Primary Geography were taken through exercises in these branches, exhibiting remarkable feats in mental gymnastics for such miniature athletes. Miss Marquis evidently has her pupils thoroughly trained and the examination reflected credit both on the teacher and her pupils. The examination of
THE GRANMAR SCHOOL
came off on Friday Dec. 20. The exercises were in Mental Arithmetic, Physical Geography, Grammar, Physiology, History, Arithmetic and Algebra. The pupils showed a thor-
ANAHEIM HOTEL BALL.
The Ball given at the Anaheim Hotel last Wednesday evening was a most enjoyable affair, and taking into consideration the state of the weather, which was bad, the attendance was unusually large. The following, as far as our reporter could ascertain, is a list of the LADIES present.
Misses I and S Smith; Mrs J Fischer; Mrs and Miss Bremmerman; Mrs F A Korn; Misses F and N Carillo; Misses Smythe; Mrs T Reiser; Mrs Burkley; Mrs A W Steinhart; Mrs Kroeger; Mrs Knipe; Miss Eva Parker; Mrs P Davis; Miss Mendelssohn; Miss Guthrie; Mrs Bauer: Miss Myerholz; Miss Clavitur; Mrs Martin; Mrs Conrad; Mrs Rust; Mrs Joel Parker.

The Grammar School came off on Friday Dec. 20. The exercises were in Mental Arithmetic. Physical Geography, Grammar, Physiology, History, Arithmetic and Algebra. The pupils showed a thorough acquaintance with those subjects, and answered difficult questions with a readiness really remarkable. In examining the more advanced classes Mr. Guinn discarded the text book altogether, neither teacher nor pupil using one. Mr. G. had a number of problems, ranging from primary rules to cubeboot in Arithmetic, and to Quadratics in Algebra, placed in a box. Each pupil drew one, and solving his problem at the black-board, explained his solution without word or hint from the teacher. The pupil was obliged to judge from the nature of the question, under what rule it came. To do this, a thorough knowledge of the principles upon which the rule is based was required. Although some of the problems were quite difficult, we did not notice a single failure. The solutions and explanations were made in a brief and clear manner. Altogether the examinations show that the youth of Anabeim, have passed their time to great advantage under the able instruction of Mr. Guinn and Miss Marquis.
Free lunch at Anaheim Hotel to night.
The Christmas Tree.—The festival held at the Masonic Hall last Tuesday evening was a general success. The hall was literally crowded with the elite of our city, and we noticed a large attendance from the suburbs of Anaheim, Los Nietos, Santa Ana, Richland, and Tustin City. The evening was opened by Mr. & Mrs. Mc Kinnie and Mr. Crowther singing "Christmas is here", which was followed by 'Kris Kringles Kristmas Karol" sung in fine style by a number of children. Mr. S.Avon; A G Beebe; H Kroeger; R N White; F Langenberger; F Lafauchier; A W Steinhart; M Steinheart; Jno Knipe; J P Zeyn; Gus Davis Burkley; F Rimpau; A Rimpau; L Halberstadt; Martin; Louis Dravsen The
Toilets of the ladies were all that could be desired: Our reporter went there with the full expectation of "doing up" the toilets à la Jenkins, but on attempting to describe the love of a "Bow" worn by Miss G. the duck of a plaid that encircled the fair form of Miss P. and the elegant "switch" which added not a little to the charms of Miss Z.—his feeble mind began to totter, and not until he had consumed half a dozen glasses of cigars, did he return to his normal condition. The mysteries of the feminine toilet were as much above his comprehension as are those of the Elensinian. The Music was furnished by the Anaheim Brass Band, and that, together with the good "calling" of Me Laugblin, contributed not a little to the pleasant res of the evening.
New Goods.—We would call the attention of the public to the new stock of goods just opened by M. Calisher & Co.—This firm offers great inducements to farmers. Although doing a strictly cash business, they are prepared to take in exchange country produce of every description. Liberal cash advances made on wool.—Let every one give them a call before purchasing elsewhere.*
Get your sausages at Dravsen & Boege.*
LARGENY.—The stable of F. S. Miles was entered on Tuesday night by some person unknown.—He was a gentleman evidently of great consideration as he only supplied his necessities, taking off with him saddle and bridle but leaving the horse unmoleated.

Tuesday evening was a general success. Mr. S. A. Hawkins made a splendid "Kris Kringle" and his appearance on the stage in the orthodox costume, peculiar to that character, was the signal of great laughter and applause. It was our intention, to give a list of the recipients, but as the Committee of Arrangements failed to provide an arm chair and desk for our reporter, and as he found it impossible to write his notes, with the crown of his hat for a desk, that interesting part of the programme must be omitted. We, however, must return thanks to that unknown tail one (our burrum tells us it must be a fair one) who so kindly remembered the "Southern Californian." We will hang that showstring up in our Sanctum, we will prize that stocking, you, we will cherish that stocking at the apple of our eye. After the presents had been distributed, the hall was cleared for dancing, and the young ones proceeded to enjoy themselves, and at midnight when our reporter retired were still treading the windings of the many.
If you want a nice dress suit for the Holidays, go to M. F. Riecke on Centre street.
LAEGENY.—The stable of F. S. Miles was entered on Tuesday night by some person unknown.—He was a gentleman evidently of great consideration as he only supplied his necessities, taking off with him saddle and bridle but leaving the horse unmolested.
DEEDS RECORDED.—A. Robinson Trustee to John Mc Arthur 567-100 acres of Los Coyotes Kancho for $708.44.
Ole Borgson to O'Melvony and Hazard.—Contract to convey certain land in or near Anaheim for the consideration of professional services.
SONOMY —Wm. Miller, an old sinner of fifty two years, was examined before Justice Kohler last Thursday and sent to jail in default of $500 bail, for an attempt to violate the person of a little boy eight years of age. He was also held over on Friday to answer to a charge of Grand Larceny.
New Years presents of all kinds at Clarke.
THE HALL ON SILVER DRIVE —Do not forget that the grand affair of the season will come off on Tuesday evening. "Mine host" of the Planters'—worthy John Fischer, knows how to get up a real nice "Hop". Go early and get your tickets; young gentlemen. It is your last chance this year.
Business suite made to order at Riecke's.
The Overland.—The January number of this popular monthly contains the usual interesting articles.
The "Christmas Chronicle" by Charles Warren Stoddard, and"The Thrust in Tiers" by David O'Connell are annually good.
Renovation of the Water Commissioners.—We are informed that the Water Commissioners have decided that it is impossible to accomplish anything under the law regulating water, and consequently will resign, calling at the same time a public meeting of the citizens of this Township, in order to take steps to organize a joint Stock Company.
This call will be made shortly after New Year.
Delinquency Taxes.—After Saturday January 4th, all taxes unpaid will become delinquent, and five per cent will be added to the original amount.
Rain — Monday morning at 1.05 o'clock A.M., the long looked for rain made its appearance. Since that time, the sky has been continuously overcast with heavy clouds with occasional showers. The Los Angeles Star says "In looking back at our rain date, we find that the first rain in 1870 71, fell on the 2nd of October to the extent of one inch. In 1871-72 on November 25th, and 26th. It inches". At the time of our going to press there is every appearance of a long continued rain. The
Town Talk
If there's a bullet in your mouth I guide you best.
A child's writing you talk about world and life here.
Town Talk was cruelly snubbed last week and not allowed to unbounce himself to his many friends. He was told that his elated space was needed for important matter, but, although the finest assurances of his nature were unfeltly lascared he has not been ill. He has been busy interviewing all the merchants and everybody else. He has been in all the stores and all the shops and several times has been in seven places at once. Although unnoticed he has not been unobservant. One thing in particular, excited his admiration, and that is, the liberal patronage bestowed upon all classes of business men now that there is so great.
A scarcity of money and all purchases and all fluids and all weeds and everything else are "chalked down." Town Talk is proud of his fellow citizens. He sees that in the town which he has honored by making it his residence, merit and credit are appreciated and money looked upon with contemptuous indifference; he feels that Richard is himself again; that his foot is once more upon his native beath, and that his name is Wilkins M.T. Talk—the above is a modley selected from the best authors and is not original.—It is astonishing how a well-regulated mind can not

Talk—the above is a medley selected from the best authors and is not original.—It is astonishing how a well regulated mind can not divert his thoughts from business matters even in the midst of THE CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.
The Christmas trees, the Christmas balls and all the other festivities incident to the season have made all grown up persons forget their cares and sorrows and become for a short period young again, and have caused the young people to take all the best things for themselves and act in that respect like old folks. The great event of the week however was.
THE BALL AT THE ANAHEIM HOTEL, which was really a very creditable well arranged affair, One thing Town Talk noticed with pleasure, there were no improper characters admitted. Some of our past balls have been rendered disagreeable by the presence of persons who were entirely out of place. Town Talk has in his composition a great deal of that christian charity which Tom Hood says the majority of the good people of the world lack, and thinks that a certain class of people are oftentimes as much sinned against assining. He believes that charity should "suffer all things" except allowing the persons of whom he speaks to appear in respectable society. Town Talk trusts that the example of Mr. Neberlung may be strictly followed in the future. Town Talk in his endeavors to cater to the public tastes interviewed the other evening.

He wished to see if she could say anything except "Yes" and "No". He opened the campaign by remarking that he thought we would have some rain this year, if it was not a dry season thereby affording an opportunity for an argument. She replied in accents soft and mellifluous, "Ohl Dear Town Talk. we will have such a lovely, sweet, delicious time at Fischer's ball next week and won't the Masquerade in February be delightful.
It will be so nice when we take off our dominoes, and oh! Town Talk don't you dote on the Redowa—Here Town Talk hastily interposed, lifted up his hands, and exclaiming in the maiden tongue, Goodness gracious! watched her retreating form as a tall slim man with side whiskers whirled her from the vacant chair on the side nearest Town Talk's heart.
