Southern California SATURDAY...SEPT. 21, 1873 L. P. DISHLER, 20 and 21 New Merchants' Exchange, is our authorized Agent in San Francisco FOR CONGRESS. FOURTH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT. E. J. C. KEWEN, OF LOS ANGELES. B. R. Survey through the Santa Ana Canon. On Tuesday the interest felt by Anaheim in the Railroad question, now agitating the minds of the people of the county, was greatly enhanced by the arrival in our midst of an engineering party in the employ of the Texas and Pacific R.R.Cr. Mr. Jackson, the engineer in charge, will run as rapidly as possible a preliminary line through the Santa Ana Caifon, by San Bernardino, and thence to the eastern foot of the San Gorgonio Pass. The object of the survey is to obtain all necessary information for the subsequent location of the Texas Pacific Railway on the line examined, should the routes more directly connecting San Diego and Fort Yuma cost so large an amount of money as to prove financially impracticable. The Engineers of the Texas Pacific are also making a preliminary examination of that supplement. We present our readers this week with what is intended to be ailar feature of the paper hereafter supplement. This enables us furnish a large amount of sol matter, and vastly enhances the value of the Southern California as a family paper. This su ment will be furnished regularly with both weekly and semi-week editions. Declaration of Sentiment the Anaheim Greeley City Following is a Declaration of Sentiment adopted by the Greeley and Brown C Anabeim, and condensed from the De tion of Independence, by their Secrete All men are created equal; that th endowed by their Creator with certain alienable rights; that among these a liberty and the pursuits of happiness to secure these rights, governments instituted among men deriving their powers from the consent of the gov em that whenever any form of gover n becomes destructive of these ends, it duty of the people to abolish it, and ate new government, laying its f lion on such principles, and organis powers in such form, as to them shall most likely to effect their safety and pines. The Engineers of the Texas Pacific are also making a preliminary examination of that portion of the "Poole" Survey lying between Warner's Pass and San Diego, and of a line running north from San Diego, passing up the valley of the San Luis Rey river, and connecting with the Poole survey at the head of that river. Should the Texas Pacific adopt the line through San Gorgonio, it will pass over the most direct route from Fort Yuma to Los Angeles city and will diverge toward San Diego at a point not more than thirty miles from Los Angeles. Should the road be constructed from Warner's Pass to the San Luis river, Los Angeles will be distant only ninety miles from the point of divergence. It is not only possible but extremely probable that one of these two routes will be finally adopted, and in that event Los Angeles city can be made the temporary terminus of the main trunk line from Shreveport to San Francisco by the construction of less than one hundred miles of railway, passing through the centre of the agricultural lands of the county. The San Diego & Los Angeles Railway propose to make this connection and ask for that purpose aid from the county. The general favor with which their proposition has been received proves conclusively the earnest desire of our people for connection with the Eastern States, and their confident belief in the assurance of Col. Scott, that connoction shall be immediate. HOW FAST WE GROW. Referring to our forthcoming semi-weekly, friend Lawrence of the Havilah Miner, pays Anaheim the following handsome compli- new government; laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing powers in such form, as to them shall most likely to effect their safety and pines. And accordingly, past experience shown that the people of this enlightened country are a long way along, patient and law abiding people when a long train of abuses and nuisances, pursuing the same object, evinces design to reduce them under absolute poverty, it is their duty to throw off government, and to provide new guild their future security. The history of administration of President Grant is testimony of repeated injuries and usurpation all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over States. To prove this, we submit the following facts: 1st. He has refused his assent to the most wholesome and necessary public good— He has forbidden Governors and legislatures of the several States of this country to pass laws of immediate and prudent importance, unless suspended in operation until his assent should be obtained— He has refused to pass other laws the accommodation of large districts, people, unless those people would quish the riget of representation Legislatures of States and Congress United States— He has, in a most unprecedented manner, called together legislative bodies the sole purpose of coercing them presence of bristling baynoots) intelligence with his measures— He has dissolved representative repeatedly, for opposing with manliness his invasions on the rights of people— He has constantly obstructed the institution of justice. He has made judges dependent will alone— He has erected a multitude of offices, and sent into our sister States of officers to harass our people and their substance— He has kept among our sister standing armies in time of peace, and our consent of their Legislature— He has rendered the military force absent of, and superior to, the civil force— He has combined with others to our people to a jurisdiction foreign rights, unacknowledged by their framed laws, and then giving him to their pretended acts of legislation. He has deprived the people, in cases, of trial by jury— He has while lavishing in rural side sports neglected and wholly turned a deal ear to the appallance of the wounded and dying pioneers. HOW FAST WE GROW. Referring to our forthcoming semi-weekly, friend Lawrence of the Havilah Miner, pays Anaheim the following handsome compliment: SEMI-WEEKLY.—The Anaheim Southern Callforian, of Los Angeles county, published by the enterprising and talented young genius of the "Art Preservative," Charles A. Gardner, will soon be published semi-weekly. The cause of putting the editor to so much expense and extra labor is that that flourishing, progressive and intelligent little city is willing to pay for it. When the paper was first published there less than two years since—Anaheim only polled 75 votes; to-day it can poll nearly 600. This immense increase in her population is mainly due to the Callforian which has made known the unlimited resources of which Anaheim—the destined paradise of California—can justly boast. Never falling crops of oranges, lemons, figs and other tropical fruits grow there in as great abundance as in the vicinity of the equator, their native soil and climate. We would not be surprised at a daily making its appearance in Anaheim before another year rolls around—there is no telling what that little incident may come to, when backed by a liberal public and an energetic editor. At first blush we were disposed to regard his figures as exaggerated, but a reference to the record of past elections, and a calculation of the percentage of increase shows that he is not far wrong. The last general election before the publication of a paper here was in 1869, when 83 votes were cast. In 1871 at the general election 276 names were enrolled, which shows a gain of 233 percent in two years. Now if the gain is half that in one year, (as it doubtless is.) we should have over 600 voters enrolled for the general election this fall. LITERARY NOTES. Peters Musical Monthly for Sept. is received. It contains the following music: Father of all, Lay Me where my Mother's Sleeping, Little Dan (Song & Chorus), Coronation Song, Merry Insects Flying, Love Chase Galop, School Girl's Waltz, Willie's Schottische, Laughing Wave Masurka.
