SATURDAY... AUGUST 24, 1872
THE EAGLE AND THE WREX.
A FABLE.
The birds once met—an ancient story reads—
To choose a monarch. So they each agreed
Whoever highest soared by witter wing,
Should be proclaimed henceforth their sovereign king.
Up sprang they then with one accord, and through
Their native element like arrows flew;
But highest rose the eagle, who did scar
Until his wearied wing could beat no more;
Her waiting to be told in better words,
Proclaimed himself the sovereign of the birds.
Between his shoulders, unperceived till then,
Not perched in quiet ease the little wren.
Who, as the eagle ceased to mount, quick rose,
On tiny pinion, far above her fees,
And twittered forth the victory at length
Of wit and intellect over bulk and strength,
Cleanse the Skin
It is a curious fact illustrating the necessity of cleanliness, and of keeping, the pores of the skin open, that if a coat of varnish or other substance impervious to moisture be applied to the exterior of the body, death will ensue in about six hours.
The experiment was once tried on a child at Florence. On the occasion of Pope Leo Xth's accession to the Papal chair, it was desired to have a living figure to represent the Golden Age, and so a child was guilded all over with varnish and gold leaf. The child died in a few hours. If the fur of a rabbit or the skin of a pig be covered with a solution of India rubber in naphtha, the animal ceases to breathe in a couple of hours.
When Barke made one of his famous attacks upon the crown civil list he was several times noisily interrupted by somebody who, occupying an official position in the house-hold, seemed to think himself

When Burke made one of his famous attacks upon the crown civil list he was several times noisily interrupted by somebody who, occupying an official position in the house-hold, seemed to think himself the special champion of royalty. The officious person kept reminding the orator every now and then with vehement interjections, of his duty to the king. At last Burke paused in the flow of his speech, and declared that he perfectly understood it to be his duty to honor the king, but he did not thereby feel constrained to honor the king's man servant, his maid servant, his ox, and—fixing his eyes upon the obnoxious intruder—"his ass."
The monks of La Trappe have a clock in their large hall of the Convent, which is a frightfully complete piece of handiwork and mechanism. A perfect human skeleton stands by the wall, pointing with its fleshless fingers at the hours marked upon the dial, which resolves. The picture is a hideous one, but the monks see a moral in its existence and a lesson in its death-like certainty.
Scotland has a newspaper which is printed on the road from Edinburgh to Glasgow, in a car belonging to the paper, which contains a printing machine, cases of type, and quick compositors. During the journey the edition for the provinces is worked off, with the addition of the news and telegrams received on the road.
A New York farmer laughed when his prudent wife advised him not to smoke on a load of hay. He footed it home that night with his hair singed, most of his garments a prey to the devouring elements, and the iron work of his wagon in a potato sack; and then his wife laugh-ed.

The people of Woodland and vicinity have made a movement toward building a narrow gauge railroad from that point through Yolo county. Residents of Solano have become interested in the Maine Prairie and Cañon project and an effort will be made to act in conjunction.
Mother Goose is not an imaginary person. She was the mother in-law of a printer in Boston, Mass., and her real name was Elizabeth Goose. The first edition of her well-known rhymes was sold for two coppers on Devonshire street.
Servia enjoys the pleasant distinction of being the only European State without a national debt. Its population is a little over one million, and it has an army of 4,000 men, with a milita of 7,000. Happy servia!
England paid the United States last year for cotton $184,000,000 and, making this up into fabrics, she cleared $188,000,000 of net profit, more than doubling her money.
A man out West, speaking of the singing of his village choir, says it is like drift wood in a stream; it drags on the bars, yet don't amount to a dam.
