Southern California SATURDAY... AUG. 17. 1872 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Land-squatting—Title to the Ranchos. As we have heretofore published some items relative to the taking up of claims on the San Joaquin and Lomas de Santiago ranchos, it may be of interest to state that we have since carried considerably more regard to the title to these lands, by the courtesy of Mr French, agent for the owners. From memoranda from the patients it appears, as far as we can judge, that there is a complete title to the grants in the gentlemen Mr P. represents, and patents duly recorded for the same. Also that these grants actually cover the ground that is claimed for them. We publish this to apprise all parties concerned of the true state of the case, as it appears from the best fight we have upon the subject. In handing us this memoranda, Mr. F. remarks. "My object is to have the facts stated so that honest citizens may not be mislead, and induced to engage in an enterprise that will prove disastrous to themselves and annoying to us. Suit will soon be commenced in the Dist. Court against persons who have already squatted on the ranch, unless they vacate. Enclosed I hand you memoranda to these lands." A Voice from Santa Ana. En. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN—Mr Olden, in his last communication on the R.R. question, gets excited and, in language not polite, goes off ter those who signed the protest, saying they signed it by misrepresentations made to them. Now there were many signed that protest that are just as well informed on the subsidy question as Mr Olden, who it would seem, wants to arrogate to himself the right to speak for this portion of the county. There are many of us voters and taxpayers who would like to know whether Stanford & Co. are legally bound to build the Anaheim road or whether they have merely promised to build it. If the latter is the case (which I suspect is) they will be prepared to demand and enforce more concessions when they have secured the 5 per cent. subsidy. For this and other good reasons, one of which is they have not designated the initial point whether Los Angeles, Compton, or some other point, no one seems to know, and Mr Olden—a subsidy champion—in place of further enlightening us on the subject, closes in a lofty burst of verbose eloquence, calling those who differ with him on the subject "silly fools;" profound argument that, but will (?) change many votes to subsidy. J. P. JOHNSON. Dedication. By the courtesy of Messrs M B. Craig and Jesse Davis, we are enabled to give some definite information concerning the approaching dedication of the new school house. "My object is to have the stated so that honest citizens may not be mislead, and induced to engage in an enterprise that will prove disastrous to themselves and annoying to us. Suit will soon be commenced in the Dist. Court against persons who have already squatted on the ranch, unless they vacate. Enclosed I band you memoranda from the Patents to these lands which you may rely upon as being entirely accurate." More Artesian Wells.—Two more artesian wells have been struck at Westminster since our last report: one at Mr. Zachariah McChesney's and another at Mr. Thos Goldworthy's. These make thirteen good artesian wells now in operation in the Colony, and make that place in this respect quite a formidable rival of Comptonville. Three sets of arterian boring tools are in constant use. Mr. Putney is boring for a second well at Mr. Napiers, the Colony tools are boring at J Y Anderson's, and the Company's tools are working at Mr. Yates. Great consternation has recently been caused at San Jose by the discovery of trichinae in a Chicago ham, part of which had already been eaten. What consequences ensued to the eaters we have not yet heard. Another discovery in connection with these terrible posts is announced by scientific men, viz. that their existence is not confin'd to pork, but extends to other meats as well: beef, mutton, etc. It seems that the only absolute safety in eating any kind of meat is in having it thoroughly cooked, which is sure to kill any animal life that may exist within it. LAND SALES:—Mr Francis S. Miles has this week bought from the Land Co. 440 acres of land about 24 miles north of the center of town. This is in addition to the purchase of 400 acres by Mr M. from the same Co., mentioned last week. He has been an invalid for fifteen years past, and as such has made an especial study of climate, both in America and the Dedication. By the courtesy of Messrs M B. Craig and Jesse Davis, we are enabled to give some definite information concerning the approaching dedication of the new school house in Westminster. The dedication, as stated elsewhere, is to take place on the 20th inst.-next Tuesday. The exercises begin at 11 A.M. with a dedicatory address by Rev. Dr Poor, of Oakland. Other addresses will also be delivered, and vocal and instrumental music fill up the intervals. A tree dinner will be spread at two o'clock, P.M., to which all are invited. The whole to conclude with a "social" in the evening. The public generally are invited. This will make a pleasant time to visit Westminster and see the many fine artesian wells in operation there. Our Heavy Men.—Over seventy person and firms in this county are this year assessed for $20,000 and over. Twelve are in for over $100,000 each, viz (in round numbers). That beats our climate. LAND SALES:—Mr Francis S. Miles has this week bought from the Land Co. 440 acres of land about 2½ miles north of the center of town. This is in addition to the purchase of 400 acres by Mr M. from the same Co., mentioned last week. He has been an invalid for fifteen years past, and such has made an especial study of climate, both in America and the old world, and now fixes upon Anaboim as possessing climatic advantages superior to any other portion of the world he has visited. NOTARIAL APPOINTMENT.—It gives us pleasure to announce that our esteemed fellow citizen, John W. Clark, Esq., has received the appointment of Notary Public for this County, to succeed Dr. J. A F. Heyermann, whose term has expired. Mr Clark may be found at his office in Enterprise Hall building. PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.—Preaching next Sabbath at 10½ A.M., at Enterprise Hall, by Rev. D. W. Poor D. D., pastor of the first Presbyterian Church of Oakland, and Prof. of Ecological and Biblical History and Church Government in the Theol. Seminary of San Francisco. Dr. Poor was born in Ceylon, India of Missionary parents, where he lived until 19 years old. He is impressed with the fact that Anaheim in trees, shrubs, and flowers presents much to remind him of the lovely country of his early youth. The Alpine Miner, of the 3d inst., contains the Great Register of that county, by which we observe that, according to a column of figures headed "age," the people up there are all the way from 250 to 380 years old. That beats our climate. The California Agriculturist is at hand for August. We think this is the most interesting number we have received and evinces considerable improvement in the editorial department. Published at San Jose by Holloway & Herring; $1 50 per year. KILLED BY LIGHTNING.—Fifteen sheep belong to Irvine Flint & Co., were killed in Santiago Canon by lightning, during the heavy thunderstorm which prevailed Monday night and Tuesday morning 5th and 6th inst. CAMP MEETING.—From a friend who was present we learn that the camp meeting held in Santiago Canon this week was very well attended, there being about 200 people present. THE MASONS.—Held a meeting this week. Desiring to keep up our reputation as an enterprising newspaper, we sent a man up to report, but they would not let him in. At the old Mission of San Diego are 300 olive trees that are from 80 to 100 years old. ...Captains John Auckland, of the British army, has just died in Ireland. He was ninety-three years of age; and at Corunna commanded the burial party which committed the body of Sir John Moore to the earth under the G.W. Preston array. JOHN battles of Rainbow Salamanca and Culdad Rodrigo his history was distinguished. He is one of the leaders of the forlorn hope in the storming of Badajoz. He fought at Verdin and used to say that one of the greatest Napoleon pointments of his life was that he could not reach the field (Waterloo until Napoleon had taken flight). It is decided that eleven thousand five minutes in the proper speed for the rise of the circular saw to travel to do the best work. His saw is small of course; it will require more revolutions per minute to acquire that speed than it will for a large saw. No. OF SCHOOL CHILDREN.—Supt. McFadden has just favored us with the following: The school census marshals have their returns all in and the school census children between 5 and 15 years foot up 6,177. Last year there were 5,137. The Germans propose to celebrate annually, the 2d of December, the day on which German quality was proclaimed in the same way that we celebrate the 4th of July.
