Southern Californian SATURDAY... AUGUST 10, 1872 "Ocean's Flowers" At the house of a friend, in Tustin City, we recently found the following pretty lines, written under a wreath of bright-colored seaweeds.—Ed. Call us not weeds, we are Bow's of the sea. For lovely, and bright, and gay tinted are we. And quite independent of sunshine'and showers; Then call us not weeds, we are ocean's gay flower's. Not nursed, like the plants of a summer parterre, Where gales are but sighs of an evening air, Our exquisite, fragile and delicate forms Are nursed by the ocean and rocked by the storms. Redwood Wine Casks At a meeting of the Grape Growers' Association of Sonoma, Napa and Solano counties, convened at St. Helena on the 13th inst., the statement was made that difficulties were likely to arise in procuring a supply of casks, in consequence of the scarcity and high price of oak staves. This information elicited the fact from several sources, that redwood casks answered a tolerable purpose. Mr. Hood of Sonoma, had used them for several years, and their cost is 50 per cent less than those made of oak. Mr. Pellet had several redwood casks in use, of the capacity of one thousand gallons each, and found no particular objection to them for holding either white or red wine. There was a trifling leaking the first year, owing probably to imperfect construction, but they soon received a tartar incrustation that remedied this defect. A Practical Illustration. Shortly after the installation of a new Justice of the Peace, Pat C—entered the office in a great hurry and accosted him, saying: "I met a man across the way who struck me just so," (giving the Justice a poke in the ribs); "will you tell me what I could do to him?" "Well, sir," said the Justice. "I should have served him just so," giving Pat a kick that sent him bowling out of the office. It is to winesdrinking we owe the origin of the kiss. After Maecenas caught his wife sucking his finest wines, through the bunghole of a barrel with a straw, the custom became general in Rome for the husbands to kiss the lips of their wives, that they might discover the quality of their good ladies' stolen libations; and Cato, the elder, recommends this plan to the serious attention of all careful heads of families. A colored preacher in Sparta, Ga., sometime ago, was heard to say in a funeral sermon of a deceased brother: "He ruminates no longer among us; he have exonerated from the syllogisms of this world's discrimination, and when he gits to de cold dry streem of de River Jordin the Kerosines and Periphenes will meet Lim dare to row him over on dry land to the sylverstering city." A venerable secesh citizen of South Carolina recovered his speech, after being dumb for nine years, on reading of Greeley's nomination by the Democratic convention in that state. He glanced at the paper in dumb amazement for a white, and then, with a mighty effort, shouted, "That just beats h—ll!" Strangely enough, he hasn't spoken since. It is said that so popular are American travelers in Austria, that the primary school books in the schools contain spelling exercises and parsing exercises as follows: "The American are a generous people." "The Americans are rich and liberal." "All Americans are rich," etc., etc." Wise Infant—At one of the schools in Cornwall, Eng., the inspector asked the children if they could quote any text of Scripture which forbade a man having two wives. One of the children sagely quoted in reply the text, "No man can serve two masters." A Quaker's advice to his son on his wedding day: "When thee went a courting I told thee to keep thy eyes wide open; now that thou art married, I tell thee to keep them half shut. A bashful printer refused a situation in a printing office where females were employed, saying that he never "set up" with a gal in his life. A Western man at a "prayer meeting" said, somewhat enviously: "Brother Lawson can sing better than I can, but by the grace of Heaven I can fiddle his shirt off."
