Southern Californian SATURDAY...JULY 27,1872 The Spiritualist Convention—Addresses by Thos. A. Garey and Mrs. Kate Parker. The Convention of Spiritualists, which was first announced three weeks ago, through the columns of this paper, was held here on Saturday and Sunday last, 20th and 21st inst. It was held in the open air, in a sort of camp meeting style, just at the eastern edge of town, about 80 rods south of Center street, in a shady place under the willows and poplars. Board seats were provided, and a cabinet organ furnished music and constituted the speaker's stand. The attendance on Saturday and Sunday in the forenoon, was light, but in the afternoon of the latter day a large audience assembled. The seats were well filled and every available "leaning" place occupied. The many wagons and carriages standing around were also filled with listeners. FIRST DAY. Saturday, at 3 P.M., the convention was called to order by Mr. Garey, in a few appropriate remarks concerning the motives for which the company had assembled. Mrs. Parker announced the subject of her address for the following day, and then, the number present being but small, it was resolved to defer a formal organization until Sunday at 10 A.M. to which time the meeting adjourned. SECOND DAY. Speaker read extract from Brick Peterson's "Saturday night," as an excerpt. Didn't endorse "Brick" politically, admired his "Saturday night," and did to add his name to the list of notable italists. SECOND DAY. Sunday at 10:30 A.M., the convention was organized by electing Joel Parker President; Mrs. George Lord, of San Bernardino Vice President, and Chas. A. Gardner Seey. The exercises of the day were commenced by music and singing, Mr. Charles Counza presiding at the organ. The President then announced Mr. Thos A. Garey, of Los Angeles, who thereupon proceeded to deliver the opening address of the convention. MR. GAREY'S ADDRESS. Mr. Garey first read to his audience a poem entitled "There are no Dead." He then prefaced his remarks with a comparison of the small beginnings of spiritualism to the sources of a great river. The Mississippi was narrow and insignificant at its head, but, by and by, it flowed on and gathered strength and volume, until it became resistless in its mighty course. So with the progress of the faith whose tenets he came to teach. This was the first Spiritual meeting or lecture in Anaheim. The number present was small. Only a few would even hear what he had to say. But the people would become interested and want to know more. From the comparative obscurity of the present principles of Spiritualism would burst forth into the light of popular investigation. Spiritualism was young, only 24 years old, yet it had spread through the United States and crossed the ocean. In England, France and Germany and throughout the Universal Kingdoms of man its principles were being rapidly accepted as the popular faith. The Emperor of France was a Spiritualist, the Czar of Russia, likewise, under the teachings of Hume. Queen Victoria performed no important official act without first consulting the spirit of her dead husband. Lincoln was a spiritualist and most of the great minds of the age were imbued with its spirit. The introducers of all new creeds were unpopular. Men suffered martyrdom now, if not by stoning, at least by the scathing fire of public opinion. Jesus was looked upon with suspicion. The people wanted no contradiction of the established faith. The world had progressed up from Christina of India to the Christianity of the present time. Spiritualism is the touchstone of reason; weigh our teachings, do not condemn without a hearing. Modern spiritualism in an innovation on prior teachings of the 19th century it is the quintessence of the teachings of the Nazarene. It is to Christianity what the teachings of Jesus were to the teachings of Moses, or, in other words, explains more fully the exalted teachings of Jesus. The forms and ceremonies of religion are empty and useless, "a sounding brass and tinkling cymbal," The age of form and ceremony had passed away. The speaker then announced the subject of his lecture as "Death and the After Life." After death was the resurrection, Gabriel sounded the trumpet and all go to judgment; the wicked to perdition and righteous to abode of the blessed. But no place had ever been assigned to his soul, from the time it left the body until that resurrection—a period of perhaps millions of years—its condition had been never explained. Thought people should set apart a time free from the cares of the world, to commune with themselves, and the spirits of the departed. As usual Mr. G. prefaced his remarks by a reading, this time a poem "Just across the River." Speaker remarked upon the great antiquity of the principles of Spiritualism. They were as ancient as man; have existed from the beginning of time; oldest records abound in their evidence. Chinese have authentic records dating back 40,000 years; they are spiritualistic. Two hundred millions of Hindos believe in gods, demons, and various grades of animated spiritual life. Nature as well as man, grow, mature and die. Systems of religions grow, mature, fill their niches in the temple of progress, then pass away to give place to more advanced systems, adapted to the age. AMERICAN HOMES—This pleasant little magazine again comes to hand filled with interesting sketches, poems, and many pictures. It is very cheap; only 10 per number or 125 per year with a chromo. The Farm and Fireside is a little paper coming from New York, which appears to be an advertising sheet for a sewing machine company. 200 years: they are spiritualistic. It is probable that Abraham was a Brahmin, from the country of his reputed natively, Abraham saw spirits. Said most people who attended church, did so merely for the looks of it. Had observed some of most prominent church members in Los Angeles go to sleep during service. Speaker knew it was unpopular to become an avowed Spiritualist. When he openly embraced it, he lost his reputation, but still retained his character. Had been advised to contribute to a church fair for policy's sake but didn't do business in that way. The Farm and Fireside is a little paper coming from New York, which appears to be an advertising sheet for a sewing machine company. Well Boring—The success which has of late attended the boring of artesan wells makes it a matter of public interest, and many will now seek this great benefit to their land, who would not have thought of it before. Mr. A. E. Putney has been exceedingly successful with his method of boring, finding good streams of water where others have after much useless expense, failed. Mr. Putney will give prompt attention to any business in that line upon addressing him at Anaheim.* The great Boston Peace Jubilee was financially a failure. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN.—The disgraceful affair of last Sunday shows the real necessity which exists for a city government. With a more efficient local organization no such transaction could have happened, and the few movers in the petition for disincorporation should feel ashamed of themselves, in view of the fruits of their under-handed efforts. There was at best but a small portion of the people in favor of relinquishing the city charter, and if the question were put to vote to-day, after what has just happened. I believe that nine-tenths of the voters would be in favor of the city. If law ceases to be respected here, and the life of every man hangs upon the mercy of gamblers and desperate victims of that state of affairs have only to thank a small portion of the community for their instrumentality in destroying our local government.
