Southern Californian SATURDAY...JULY 6. 1873 LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. Church Matters A large and appreciative audience attended Divine service last Sabbath, to listen to an excellent discourse by the Rev. L. P. Webber, prepared with especial reference to the subject uppermost in the minds of all, the erection of a church building. The speaker chose his text from the story of the rebuilding of Jerusalem by the Jews under Nehemiah, and wrought therefrom an eloquent and well-timed appeal to the hearts of his hearers, pertinent to the present occasion. At the close of the service a meeting of these interested in the proposed building was held, Mr. J. P. Pierce acting as Moderator. The lists of subscriptions to the building fund were handed in, and the aggregate amount ascertained to be $1,015 including $500 promised aid from the General Building Fund of the Presbyterian Church, and $230 raised heretofore by musical concert, etc., with accrued interest upon the same. The amount raised is too small as yet to carry out the plans for building. It was intended to build a house worth $3,000, and the aid of the Home Society cannot be had (as we understand it) unless with their contribution, the building be left free from debt. This would leave a considerable sum still to be obliged to stop now after so much has been accomplished and we sincerely hope that the requisite aid will be furnished and the building go forward at once. INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS—At a regular meeting of Anaheim Lodge No. 199, I.O. O. F, held at their hall last Tuesday evening, the following officers elect were duly installed into their respective offices by D.D.G.M., Henry Wartenberg assisted by a number of P.G's and visiting brethren; E.W. Champlin N.G., John P.Zeyn V.G.; Frank R.Lafaucherie R.S.; R. Heimann Treasurer; Lewis E.Smith P.S.; S.H. Dyer R.S.N.G.; Jno Adams L.S.N.G.; Max Nebelung R.S.V.G.; A.J.Brown R.S.S.; H.A.Boego L.S.S.; D.D.G.M. Wartenberg addressed the Lodge after which several addresses were made by the visiting brethren. PETIT LARCENY.—Last Monday evening Peter Maguire was caught robbing the cash-drawer of the City Market. Mr. Geo. Kirsch, who discovered the gentleman in the act, immediately pounced open the offender and punished him severely until he made his escape out of the door. Maguire was at once arrested by Constable C. F. Lehman; and lodged in jail. Next morning he was brought before His Honor, A.Kohler Esq., and promptly pleaded guilty to a charge of petit larceny. He was sentenced to pay a fine of $25 with the alternative of 124 days in the county jail. It was intended to build a house worth $3,000, and the aid of the Home Society cannot be had, (as we understand it) unless with their contribution, the building be left free from debt. This would leave a considerable sum still to be raised, which however it is hoped may be secured in time to enable the enterprise to be pushed forward at once. It would be an excellent thing for Anaheim to have a fine church building such as it is proposed to put up. It would improve the beauty of the town, have a tendency to keep with us many strangers who now pass through, and redeem us from the imputation of having no presentable house of worship. The meeting, after deliberating upon the financial situation resolved to meet again next Sunday and in the meantime, resolve itself into a Committee of the Whole to solicit further subscriptions to the building fund. No building site has yet been selected, and the Rev. John Marquis Mr. Hunter and Doctor J. S. Gardiner were appointed a Committee to select such site and report at the next meeting. And here it is well to state that at the meeting to-morrow, it is possible that the location of the building will be finally decided upon, and anyone having any proposition to make concerning such location had better submit it for consideration before that time. In this connection a brief history of the organization would not be inappropriate. The Presbyterian Church was organized in Anaheim, March 6th, 1870, with nine members. P. C., McKinnie and William Patterson were elected Ruling Elders. On the 20th of the same month a call was extended to the Rev. L. P. Webber to come and take pastoral charge of the little flock. He accepted the call, and in the middle of the following June entered upon his duties, which he has since continued to discharge with unflagging zeal. The First Stake—The first stake on the west end of the T. P. R. R. has been driven on the Rancho, owned by Kimball Bros., and about seven miles from new San Diego. It is in that portion of land of which the Kimball Bros., have offered to donate 10,000 acres for the terminus to be made on their land. Rather Hard—Mr. Hounsley who was married here a few months since was, we learn, arrested last week and taken to San Diego County on a charge of an assault, committed several months ago. Deer Shooting—The following is of interest to those who contemplate shooting deer: "Sacramento, June 28th, 1872. J. Williamson, Secretary California Acclimation Society: Season for deer shooting August 1st to January 1st, except El Dorado, Placer, Sierra and Siskiyou, in which counties from August to February. Drury Melone, Secretary of State. A Lady Practitioner—We invite attention to the medical card of Mrs Alice Higgins, in another column. Many cases arise in domestic practice which are more properly within the province of woman than man to attend to, and where, as in the present instance, a lady of learning and experience is at hand, it will be found of great advantage to the patient to secure her services. Apricots—We return thanks to Mr. Rimpau, for some very fine ripe apricots, among the first of the season, which have mysteriously found their way from his garden to our one hundred and ninety-seventh street. P. C. McKinnie and William Patterson were elected Ruling Elders. On the 20th of the same month a call was extended to the Rev. L. P. Webber to come and take pastoral charge of the little flock. He accepted the call, and in the middle of the following June entered upon his duties, which he has since continued to discharge with unflagging zeal, coupled with a deep interest and the most strenuous efforts for the improvement and advancement of the country where his lot has been cast. Amid many adverse circumstances, the young church has struggled on, slowly gathering strength and numbers until now it embraces a membership of about 25 yet is still feeble in temporal resources. They have heretofore conducted their excercises in places other than those consecrated to the worship of God but they feel that the time has now come when this growing and flourishing town, one of the most prosperous in the state, should include among her public building, a church. They appeal to the people of Anaheim and vicinity for means to erect a sanctuary which shall at once be a credit to the place and a centre from which a healthful influence shall go forth As before remarked, over half the sum has already been subscribed. It will require a good deal of present self-denial, but on next Sabbath it is to be decided whether to go forward or not. APRICOTS.—We return thanks to Mr. Rimpau, for some very fine ripe apricots, among the first of the season, which have mysteriously found their way from his garden to our sanctum. "Gospel Swamp."—An excellent letter from this locality appears on first page. A gentleman capable of writing so good a communication should keep us better posted than we have heretofore been upon the merits and local institutions of his neighborhood. We hope to hear from him again; By the way, we dislike exceedingly to designate so fine a settlement as this by so irreverent a title, but as the people call themselves by that name we feel constrained to "follow suite." Can they not adopt something which would be prettier and in better taste? WESTMINSTER School House.—The contract for building the school house at Westminster was let to Mr. P. C. McKinnie, and work commenced on the 26th ult. The main building is 24x32, with a wing 14x16. It has a 14 foot ceiling and will be sided with rustic. The cost will be about $1,300. Its location is in the town site of Westminster, near the residence of Mr. Josso Davis. Literary Notices, The Overland Monthly.—It is a pleasure to open a new number of this California favorite and enjoy the nice little sketches, and the weightier historical articles, which are sure to be found therein. The July No. comes to hand, fresh and spicy on the breezes of one of our own lovely plains, and a reading of its contents is like the delicious snuffing of the breath of many flowers, "Recollections of Gen. Halleck," is a useful article to begin with "The Maguey — Century Plant" tells something few of us know before of a plant which is common in our door-yards. "Southern California" is a poem by Joaquin Miller. Don't think much of it. Miller must do better—or sell out. What does he mean by "Cocoa" in this country. We have never meet it in our travels. In a "Journey in Early Summer" the writer makes the geographical blunder of locating Red Wing on the Mississippi river below Maiden Rock, when it really is over twenty miles above it. We happened to spend the greater part of our boyhood's days within sight of that rock, and we recollect the geography of the country tolerably well. "Timm's Strategy" is a funny little story, well told. Altogether this is to us an unusually interesting number and ought to be read by all. Published by J. H.
