They were inspired by the then validament of slavery and the slave trade in and to the United States. They are supposed to have some bearing upon the present political situation, but what that bearing may be depends altogether upon the motives the reader may ascibe to the publication of the poem.—Dr. Sutton Caulman. All hall the flaunting Lie! The stars grow pale and dim, The stripes are bloody seers, A lie the vaunting hymn. It shields a pirate's deck. It bleeds a man in chains. It yokes the captive's neck. And wipers the bloody stains. Tear down the flaunting lie! Half mast the starry flag! In naught no sunny sky With hate's polluted rag! Destroy it, ye who can! Deep sink it in the waves! It beats a fellow-man To groan with fellow-slaves. Furl the boasted Lie! Full freedom lives again! To rule once more in truth, Among untrammelled men. Roll up the starry sheen, Conceal its bloody stains; For in its folds are seen The stamp of rustling chains! Letter from "Gospel Swamp." Gospel Swamp, June 26, 1872. Roll up the starry sheen, Conceal its bloody stains; For in its folds are seen The stamp of rustling chains! Letter from "Gospel Swamp." Gospel Swamp, June 26, 1872. Ed. Southern Californian. Presuming that a few items from "Gospel Swamp," would be acceptable to the readers of your excellent paper, and as you seldom visit the settlement, I will, with your sanction, write a few lines relating to the present prospect of the people. Large fields of waving corn; that extend from the foothills on the South, to the cienagas on the North, testify to the thrift and enterprise of the farmers; and, notwithstanding the recurrence of three dry seasons, the soil, with all its native richness, seems almost impregnable to the effects of the mighty devastator—drought. The summer heat, so destructive to corn growing on moderately wet lands, has damaged but little corn comparatively none. THE NEWPORT DISTRICT SCHOOL, Under the tuition of Mr. Morgan, is in a flourishing condition. There are at present about forty pupils attending school daily, and it is expected that with the next school year there will be about fifty. Every Friday afternoon Mr. Morgan exercises his school in reading, original compositions and extracts, declarations and dialogues. The manner in which the pupils acquit themselves reflects great credit on the training capacities of their teacher, as well as their own inherent and dormant faculties. There was same amount of business six days that is now done and it would be more satisfactorily performed clerks, by having one day to recuperate. But should any object rangement because of the day to be observed, sons close up their place on the day they regard bath; this would allow junction in business, and certainly be small claim or a consecient regiment if they were unobserved making such objections import of the command seventh part of our time as a period of sacred rehearsal part of the positive part (viz., the dject to Him who is "L Sabbath." SEARCHERS FOR HOMES Need go no further than Gospel Swamp, for certainly they can be satisfied with the quality of the land-the nearness of a good school, and the certainty of Divine services. I came very near forgetting to mention: CHURCH FACILITIES; Preaching 11 A.M., 2 P.M. and "candle lighting." Not that the people are so very religious, but that the ministers of the Gospel take a delight in endeavoring to convert the sinner. Ye 'homeless and despairing' come to the great "Gospel Swamp," for here you receive spiritual as well as bodily nourishment, and plenty of it, too. W J. W. THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION.-Mr. Jefferson used to relate, with much merriment, that the final signing of the Declaration of Independence was hastened by an absurd trivial cause. Near the hall in which the debates were then held was a livery stable, from which swarms of flies came into the open windows and assailed the silk-stockinged legs of honoful members. Hankerchief in hand they lashed the flies with such vigor as they could command on a July afternoon, but the annoyance became at length so extreme as to render them impatient of delay, and they made haste to bring the momentous business to a conclusion. The man whose hair turned white in a single night is surpassed by the New York girl who lost hers completely off in one dance. Nothing could do more mend Anaheim as a place dence, to those whose mongest us would be desire secure an orderly observance Sabbath and a due respect worship of the sanctuary longer be said on the other this continent that Anahe markable for nothing but guard of the Sabbath and of God's house. The better of all her German citizens such representations of the ality, and we feel sure that no means be the first to oblation of pledges so homely by her business men. To the clerks we say right, go ahead! P vince omnes. A soldier, telling his the terrible fire at Chu was asked by her why he get behind a tree. "Treasure" "There wasn't enough fire." A correspondent of the paper wants to know what and death notices show for? For the best of re is a notice of co-partnership the other is a noteworthy Business is business. Sunday Closing Movement. [On the Norwegian Gazette] In Eron,—Allow me to contate the clerks of Anaheim on the business that has attended their arts to induce the business men of place to close their doors and spend business on Sundays. This clearly a step in the right direction, and one for which the young deserve great praise. Their rest to be permitted to enjoy one in seven, as a day of rest, is but request to exercise a right which awarded to them by a higher auruity than any requirements of it. It is a request to be permitto do that which their Creator commanded them to do, and which He has enforced by a law of nature to which they do well make heed. The one-seventh part our time is required to recuperthe wasted energies of the syssion, and a disregard of this law of being will, sooner or later, bring it its penalty. We would also express our appresion of the cordial response of most of the business men to the re- Horabe Greeley as an Apprative. While Horabe Greeley was an apprentice at East Poultney, Vermont, he handed a portion of the time at the village tavern. He came to be regarded as a sort of town Encyclopedia, and is any one wanted to know anything he went as a matter of course to Greeley. So tradition goes. On this point, Mr. Parton, in his life of Greeley, relates the following, which will be read with interest at this time: Much of this is curiously confirmared by a story often told in convivial moments by a distinguished physiician of New York, who on one occasion chanced to witness at the Poultney tavern the exploits gastronomic and encyclopedic, to which allusion has just been made. "Did I ever tell you," he is wont to say, "how and where I first saw my friend Horabe Greeley? Well, thus it happened. It was one of the proudest and happiest days of my life. I was a country boy then, a farmer's son, and we lived a few miles from East Poultney. On the day in question I was sent by my father to sell a load of potatoes at the store in East Poultney, and bring back various commodities in exchange. Now this was the first time, you must know, that I had He has enforced by a law of their nature to which they do well make heed. The one-seventh part your time is required to recuperate the wasted energies of the system, and a disregard of this law of being will sooner or later, bring with it its penalty. We would also express our apprehension of the cordial response of most of the business men to the rest of their clerks. There cannot be doubt but the interest of all should be promoted by the proposed arrangement. There would be the amount of business done in the days that is now done in seven, if it would be more cheerfully and satisfactorily performed by theORKs, by having one day in seven recuperate." But should any object to the argument because of their views of day to be observed, let such person close up their places of business the day they regard as the Sabbath; this would allow just competition in business, and there would mainly be small claims to sincerity for a conscientious regard of days, they were unobserved by those making such objections. The true port of the command is that one-seventh part of our time is set apart a period of sacred rest. This is a moral part of the precept. The active part, (viz, the day), is subject to Him who is "Lord of the Sabbath." You will allow one also to appeal the judgment and to the better things of all who may have hereto be attended to secular business on Sabbath, to desist from so doing after, and allow this effort at stable reform to become a common success for all time to come. Ask you to lend a helping hand to the reformative measure, 1st. because it is right and praiseworthy, and of itself and, 2nd. because all intelligent, refined and moral people accord a desecration of the Sabbath species of semi-heathenism. Nothing could do more to commend Anaheim as a place of residence, to those whose location to success for all time to come ask you to lend a helping hand the reformative measure, 1st. because it is right and praiseworthy, and of itself and, 2nd. because all intelligent, refined and moral people ward a desecration of the Sabbath a species of semi-heathenism. Nothing could do more to command Anaheim as a place of resice, to those whose location a angst us would be desired, than to secure an orderly observance of the Sabbath and a due respect for the ship of the sanctuary. Let it no longer be said on the other side of continent that Anaheim is rekable for nothing but her disreed of the Sabbath and ordinances God's house. The better instincts all her German citizens revolt at representations of their nationity, and we feel sure they will by means be the first to invite a viion of pledges so honorably givby her business men. To the clerks we say, You are not, go ahead! Perseverantia will omnes. J. MARQUIS. A soldier, telling his mother of a terrible fire at Chickamanga, asked by her why he did not behind a tree. "Troel" said he there wasn't enough for the offense correspondent of a Baltimore her wants to know why marriage death notices should be paid. For the best of reasons; one notice of co-partnership, and other is a notion of dissolution. Business is business. ANCIENT EUROPE—An Archeological correspondent addresses as evidence of the antiquity of the game of euchra the passage in the New Testament which relates howthe priest and the Lexite "passed," and the good Samaritan "assumed."
