THREE LOVES
There were three maidens who loved a king.
They sat together behind the sun.
One哭泣, "I love him, and I would die."
If has one day he might love me."
The second whispered, "And I would die to hidden his life or make him great."
The third one spake softly, but sounded like With dreamy eyes that were as pale.
The king, he loved the first one for a day,
The wound, his life with fond love blest;
And yet the woman who never spoke
Was the one of the three who loved him best.
A Strange Dance.
There is a singular kind of dance on the greens of the villages in Russia. The dancers stand apart—a knot of young men here a knot of maidens there—each sex by itself and silent as a lot of mutes. When a piper breaks into a tune a youth pulls off his cap and challenges a girl with a wave and a bow. If the girl is willing she waves her handkerchief in token of assent; the youth advances takes a corner of the hand kerchief in his hand, and leads the lassie round and round. No word is spoken and no laugh is heard. Stiff with cords and rich with braids, the girl moves heavily by herself, round and round, and never allowing her partner to touch her hand. The pipe goes droning on for hours in the same key and measure, and the prime of merit in this circling as the dance is called, is given by spectators to the lassie, who in all the dreary round has never spoken and never smiled.

The city of Veiled Women, in Siam number 9,000 inhabitants, of whom all age of the feminine gender. One thousand of these belong to the E.F.N., and the remaining eight thousand administer to their aristocratic wants. In this feminine municipality, female blacksmiths, jewellers, merchants, and manufacturers abound, and the jack-of-all-trades is a woman. The walls are guarded by female sentinels, female policemen patrol the streets, and once a week female military, horse and foot, perform their evolutions on a large parade ground in the center of the town.
Orange Peel Confection. Orange peel preserved in sugar is one of the most delightful confections which a family can use, far superior to the extracts sold in the shops. The peel should of course be perfectly clean, and should be cut in long thin strips. Stew in water till all the bitterness is extracted. Throw away the water and stew again for half an hour in a thick syrup made of a pound of sugar to one peel, with just water enough. Put away, in a cool place, for flavoring pudding, pie, etc. For this purpose it should be chopped very fine. No better or cheaper flavoring can be furnished to a household.
An original poem thus immortalizes the original settlers in Derryfield N.H.
"It was often said that their only care,
And their only wish and their only prayer
For the present world and the world to come
Was a string of eels and a jug of rum."
Puck, a St. Louis paper, comes out with portraits of Greeley with a big pen and Grant with a big sword, accompanied by the conundrum, "Which will prove the mightier the sword or the pen?"
To cook Cod Fish, says a writer in Western Rural, never freshen it, but pick it up fine and put it in a frying pan with a large piece of butter and one quart of milk. Let it come to a boil, then pour in a tea-cut of cold milk with a table-spoon of flour stirred in it. Season with pepper to taste: The fish will salt it sufficiently.
