Southern Californian. SATURDAY... MAY 18, 1872. Hardness of Wood. It is a great convenience to know the comparative value of different kinds of wood for fuel. Taking shellbark bickory as the highest standard of our forest trees, and calling that one hundred, other trees will compare with it for value as follows: Shellbark bickory ... 100 Pignut bickory ... 95 White oak ... 84 White ash ... 77 Dogwood ... 75 Scrub oak ... 73 White hazel ... 72 Apple tree ... 70 Red oak ... 69 White beach ... 65 Black walnut ... 65 Black birch ... 62 Yellow oak ... 60 Hard maple ... 59 White elm ... 58 Red cedar ... 56 Wild cherry ... 55 Yellow pine ... 54 Chestnuts ... 52 Yellow poplar ... 51 Butternut ... 43 White birch ... 43 White pine ... 30 But it is worth bearing in mind that there is a very considerable difference in woods of the same species, according to the manner and soil on which they grow. A maple that grows slowly on an upland pasture, standing alone or apart from other trees, will last much longer and give out a greater degree of heat than one that grows in a swamp or in the midst of a dense forest on a west, Miscellaneous. But it is worth bearing in mind that there is a very considerable difference in woods of the same species, according to the manner and soil on which they grow. A maple that grows slowly on an upland pasture, standing alone or apart from other trees, will last much longer and give out a greater degree of heat than one that grows in a swamp or in the midst of a dense forest on a west, rich ground will be less solid and less durable for fuel, and consequently less valuable, than a tree of the same kind that grows on a dryer and poorer soil. For sale, to be sure, one would be just as good as the other. To the purchaser oak is oak, and pine is pine, but for home, the tree grown on dry upland and standing apart from others is worth a great deal more. Cervantes was an illustrious Spanish writer, and born in 1847. His tastes and talents were directed towards poetry. In his twenty-second year in the Papal army, he fought bravely against the Turks in the battle of Lepanto, where he received, in 1571, a hand wound which lasted for life. In 1575 he was captured by an Algerian corsair. The incidents connected with his three years of slavery in Algiers are described in the "Captive," which is an episode in Don Quixote." Released in 1580, he resumed military service. Four years afterwards, "Galatea." has first printed book, appeared. In 1605 he published the first of "Don Quixote." In 1613 he published the "Exemplary Novel," then followed his critical and satirical "Journey to Parnassus." Cervantes died on the 23d of April, 1616, Shakspeare dying on the same day in England. In a recent interview with some travelling Americans, the Pope is reported to have said that if he should ever leave Rome he would be glad to take up his residence in New York because no city in the world contains more earnest Catholics, or those more devoted to the highest and best interests of the church. Most man concede that it looks foolish to see a boy dragging a heavy sled up hill for the fleeting pleasure of riding down again. But its appears to me the boy is a sage by the side of the young man who works hard all the week, and drinks up his wages on Saturday night. In a Webfoot graveyard is found the following epitaph: "We shall always have everything to please us." Most man concede that it looks foolish to see a boy dragging a heavy sled up hill for the fleeting pleasure of riding down again. But its appears to me the boy is a sage by the side of the young man who works hard all the week, and drinks up his wages on Saturday night. In a Webfoot graveyard is found the following epitaph: "We can't always have everything to please us. For our little Johnny has gone to Jesus." Of course here was an opening for some building poet of a more skeptical turn, and who added that— "You can't always sometimes most generally tell; perhaps little Johnny has gone to—Idaho." A girl of the period comments thus on Mormonism: "How aburd! four or five wives to one man, when the fact is, each woman in these times ought to have four or five husbands. It would take about that number to support me decently." A German, while crossing the Allegany mountains during the winter, states: "Dat yen going up de mountains his foot slipped him on the ice and he coom down on the broad of his back mit his face sticking in de mud, and dere he sbtood. "Which of the Feejee islands are you from? asked a visitor of one of Barnum's cannibals the other day. 'Tipperary bedad,' was the reply of the ravenous anthropophagian. A citizen of Gosport, the other night, mistook his wife's beast bottle for his favorite "little brown jug," and took a long pull and a strong pull therefrom. He is now regarded as a rising man.
