Southern California SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 1872. Make a Note of This: Any one speaks ill of thee," says Epictetus, "consider whether he bath truth on his side, and, if so reform himself, that his conscience may not affect thee." When Alexander was told that the very boys langhed at his singing, "Ab," said he then I must learn to sing better." Plato being told that he had many enemies who spoke ill of him, said, "It is no matter; I shall live so that none will believe them." Hearing at another time that an intimate friend of his had spoken detractingly of him, he said, "I am sure he would not do it if he had some reason for it." This is the surest as well as the noblest way of drawing the sting out of reproach, and the true method of preparing a man for the great and only relief against the pains of calumny. An Indiana editor thus describes a brother of the quill: "W, J. Craig, editor of the Bluffton Banner, a dashing brunette, is rather below the medium size. Though dovelike in appearance, he is of the 2:40 kind, and has never been rubbed down by one of his own size yet; his office is in the third story, and an inclined plane running out of his back window carries away the dead and wounded visitors who call with wicked motives." It is an interesting fact, not generally known, that the flags for the Navy, War, and Treasury Departments are now made seamless, the fabric being woven in white hunting and the red stripes and the blue field dyed in pattern. They are brighter than those sewed in stripes, and by test, have been found to out wear the old fashioned make. A fair-skinned, love-sick youth in Ohio presented his "girl" with a pair of those new fang'd metallic garters on Christmas. He thought they were the latest thing in bracelets, and he only discovered his mistake upon requesting her to "try them on." He does not go there any more. "Johnny," said one of the boys to a bereaved friend who had just lost his father, "yer behaved well at the funeral." "Oh. pshaw," replied Johnny, "with the air of one whose merits were only half recognized, you should have seen me at the grave." An eccentric individual in Rhode Island is printing verses of Scripture and the Lord's Prayer on the backs of new greenbacks. He thinks thereby to secure the circulation of a sort of tracts which will neither be burned or torn up. [Great is advertising.] A Nashville negro set the house in an uproar by raising up and shouting out, "What all this mean?" after he had been shrouded for the tomb. This was Saturday, the 24th ultimo, and the "mourners" haven't stopped running yet. In an old cemetery in St. Louis is a moss-covered tombstone on which A Nashville negro set the house in an uproar by raising up and shouting out, "What all this mean?" after he had been shrouded for the tomb. This was Saturday, the 24th ultimo, and the "mourners" haven't stopped running yet. In an old cemetery in St. Louis is a moss-covered tombstone on which a single hand points heavenward, and beneath is this inscription, 'Gone up.' That was written before the phrase became slang. Josh Billings says: "Yu will notis one thing—the devil seddum offers tew go into partnership with a bizzy man but you will often see him offer to jine the lazy man and furnish all the kapital." A law has been proposed in the French Assembly providing for the first offense of drunkenness a fine, for the second a short imprisonment, and for third the loss of the right of suffrage. A place of business in Rome, N.Y. is decorated with this very intelligent notice: "Mebbe you don't petter had loaf round here, vex you don't got some peesnis, ain't it?" The barbers of Vallejo, California, have united in a petition to have their places of business closed at midnight on Saturdays in order that they may enjoy Sundays. James Russell Lowell has invented what he calls a new heatitude which is 'Blessed are they who have nothing to say and cannot be persuaded to say it.' MERCHANDISE. OLDEST BUSINESS HOUSE IN MAKEM.
