Lawrence, formerly of the Anaheim Gazette, and more latterly of the Los Angeles Star, to purchase material and establish a newspaper among them. Mr. Lawrence has procured the press and other necessary material which is already on the way to its
Personalis.
De Witt C. Lawrence of the Star, favored us with a visit on Saturday last. He is enjoying good health and looking well.
Volney E. Howard Esq., of the Los Angeles bar, passed through, yesterday morning, on his way home from San Diego.
We are glad to see Mr. Theodore Cassid, of Santa Ana, out again this week after his late severe illness. His many friends will rejoice to hear of his recovery.
Deeds Filed.
Alfred Robinson, Trustee, to Jan. H. Maddux; portion of rancho "Los Coyote," 59 acres-$708,84.
James H. Maddux to S. H. Fick, att; 59 acres of Coyote ranch, for $708,84.
Serves Him Right.—We always predicted that a man would come to grief who advertises in the paper and tells every body all about his business. A man named J. Smith (not John Smith) came here awhile ago and let every one know that he was a bootmaker, opened a nice little shop ("Our Shop," on Los Angeles street) and published it far and wide that he could make better boots than anyone else and make them cheaper than the wretched affairs bought at the stores. Well, people found out that it was so, and orders came in so fast that J. Smith soon had his hands full—had to hire an assistant. But even
Havilah, Kern Co., feeling the want of a newspaper organ to properly represent their interests, have engaged Mr. De. Witt C. Lawrence, formerly of the Anaheim Gazette, and more latterly of the Los Angeles Star, to purchase material and establish a newspaper among them. Mr. Lawrence has procured the press and other necessary material which is already on the way to its destination and will shortly start a paper there, to be called the Havilah Miner. Mr. Lawrence is a young gentleman of culture and ability and has had the necessary preliminary experience to thoroughly qualify him for the responsible duties of editor and publisher. He is gifted moreover with high musical attainments and will prove a valuable acquisition to the society of his new home. We congratulate him upon the fine business prospect afforded by this new enterprise and the more ample field for the exercise of his varied talents.
The Broken Bridge — We learn from Mr. Mitchell, late Road Overseer of this Township, that the bridge to which we referred last week, was built of the best material that could be procured for the purpose. There were four stringers, each 4x6 inches, and as they were only 8 feet in length it certainly seems as though this should have been strong enough for all ordinary purposes. Mr M. informs us that it was broken by a 12 or 14 mule team, drawing a heavier load than usually appears upon this road.
Seeds by Mail — We are glad to see many parcels of seeds coming through the mail to parties here, and even noticed the other day quite a large package of grape outtings, some 18 inches long, brought in the same way. The liberal terms upon which such articles are transmitted is a most beneficent arrangement on the part of the postal department, and is calculated to do a great deal of good to the newly settled portions of the country.
The poisoning case at El Monte has assumed quite an interesting attitude. As we learn from the News, the alleged poisoner Phillips is suspected of having been too intimate with the wife of the man Pruity who was poisoned. So it resolves itself at last into the old story that "there is a woman at the bottom of it." The bail of Phillips was reduced to $1,200.
Heimann & George — We are glad to learn that this popular firm are having made here much of the large stock of furnishing goods required for their trade. This is a commendable act on the part of these gentlemen, and should entitle them to a very large share of the goodwill and confidence of the people of Anaheim.
Snow — The rain storm of the valley seem to have been a snow storm in the mountains for the tall range is covered, pretty well down, with a clear white coat that makes things refreshingly cool these mornings, even at this distance.
For the very best photographs, finely retouched negatives or large photographs, of every size and style, go to Flanders' Photograph Parlors. Downey Block, Main street opposite Commercial; he never allows an inferior picture to leave the gallery.
San Diego Stage — We understand that an effort is being made to have the stage make the distance
and even noticed the other day quite a large package of grape outtings, some 18 inches long brought in the same way. The liberal terms upon which such articles are transmitted is a most beneficent arrangement on the part of the postal department, and is calculated to do a great deal of good to the newly settled portions of the country.
A Good Sign—Of a failing business man is the withdrawal of his advertisement from the newspaper. When a man is ashamed of his own dealings and knows that he has lost the confidence of the public he naturally dislikes to see his name in print; withdraws his advertisement, and retires to a back seat, to give place to some better firm.
RAIN—a fine little rain (nearly half an inch) fell Tuesday morning 16th inst., and improved the appearance of things considerably. Qaite a sprinkle also occurred on Thursday and served to keep the ground moist and preserve the fresh, green appearance of vegetation.
A STRAY MAIL—a bag of north-thern mail for Anaheim came up from San Diego by yesterday's stage and we were made happy and rejoiced in the receipt of Los Angeles dailies six days old, with other mail matter of a corresponding freshness.
FISH—the Anaheim fish man waits town on Tuesday. He found ready sale for his fish at 20 cta per lb.
