A CHANGE OF AGENCY.—As will be observed elsewhere. Mr. Robert N. White has retired from the Agency of the Anaheim Lighter Co., and is succeeded by Capt. Chas. Wolff. Mr. White has made many warm friends during his sojourn here who will regret his departure from among us. He carries with him our best wishes, and a hope that fortune may smile on him in whatever new field he may engage. Capt Wolff lately commanded the Schooner Wm. H. Meyer, bringing lumber to Anaheim Landing. We have not the pleasure of a personal acquaintance with him, but feel assured that he must possess to an eminent degree the qualities of a gentleman and a thorough-going business man, to have been honored by the company with this very responsible position.
THE CIRCUS.—The New York Mammoth Circus came promptly to time last Tuesday. The weather was unfortunately so windy and dusty that rather a slim house, for Anaheim, greeted the performers. The company has added many new features to its programme since its last visit, the most interesting of which is Horatio Nelson's musical machine, a curiosity in its way, and similar to a piano in sound. The performance with cannon balls and the 160-lbs dumb bell is a wonderful exhibition of human strength. The Company is now performing at Los Angeles.
A GOOD WAGON —One of the best and finest looking freight wagons we have ever seen has just been completed for Chas. A. Ferguson by those skillful workmen Crum & Co. The painting on it also, done by the Payne Bros. is a splendid specimen of work. We hope that all those who have wagons or buggies to buy will give their money to our home workmen instead of sending it away for imported work. By helping our own manufactures, we help ourselves.
REDUCTION IN FREIGHT.—We eighty acres of land in the Los Coyotes rancho, reserving a strip of land thirty feet wide on each side of the township range and section lines for roads, railroads and ditches, for $500.
Alfred Robinson to Edmund D Barker, for $700 a portion of Rancho Los Coyotes.
Philipp Davis to Pablo Dominguez; 4 acres in the Santa Ana rancho, for $138 75.
BITTEN BY A CAT.—We are informed that Mr. Wm. Fithian, who lives about 3 miles north of town, met with a singular accident lately. Two cats, in fighting, fell into his well. He got one of them out and was in the well dipping the water out when the remaining cat, in an almost drowned and dying condition, quietly crawled up to him and seized his leg with her teeth, biting clear through, and holding on with a death grip that Mr. F. could only with the greatest difficulty release The leg swelled, and showed alarming symptoms at first, but is now getting better.
NEW MUSIC.—The famous publisher M. Gray, San Francisco, sends us some new and beautiful pieces of music. Among them are the "Josie Mazurka" for the piano, "Ruth Waltz" for piano, and a charming little song and chorus entitled "Good Night Little Daisy" written by F. W. Green.
For sale by Brodrick & Reilly Los Angeles.
CASH VS. CREDIT.—Mr Calisher finds that the cheap cash principle works well. He is enabled to sell cheaper than any other store, by buying and selling exclusively on the pay as-you-go principle. He has received an agency for agricultural machinery and will soon have a large supply of the latest improved patterns,
THE EARTHQUake AT SEA.—The earthquake shock on the 26th ult...
REDUCTION IN FREIGHT.—We learn from the Star that B. L. Peel, is now in San Francisco, on business connected with the shipping interests, and that he has succeeded with Messrs. Holladay & Brenham in reducing the freight on grain to $250 per ton from San Pedro to San Francisco; and that the Company have further promised to reduce passage and freight on general merchandise very soon.
SAN DIEGO PAPERS.—A Star correspondent speaks thus of the daily newspapers at San Diego. "The two newspapers printed here are having a hard time of it. Both are losing money, although the Union has the city and county work. It is rumored that they will both go back to weeklies if railroad matters do not get brighter."
SENTENCE OF THE RIOTERS.—Following are the respective terms for which the Chinese rioters have been sentenced to the State Prison. L. F. Crenshaw, 3 years, A. R. Johnson and Luis Mendell each 6 years, Charles Austin, P. M. McDonald and Jesus Martinez 5 years each, Refugio Botello 2 years.
REPUBLICANS! — Remember the Republican primary to-day at Enterprise Saloon. Polls open at two o'clock.
THE EARTHQUAKE AT SEA.—The earthquake shock on the 26th ult., was severely felt at sea by the Schooner Ned Beale which was becalmed in the straits between San Pedro and Santa Catalina Island. The News says that the vessel was tossed about fearfully and finally sprung a dangerous leak.
LANGENBERGER & Co.—These gentlemen have entirely refitted the interior of their store since closing out their dry goods department. The house now deals only in groceries and hardware, and have arranged everything in the neatest and most commodious manner with a view to these branches.
FULL OF WORK.—The shop of Payne Bros., painters, is crowded with work. Only by the utmost diligence do they manage to keep up with orders. Their success is a gratifying proof that the public appreciate good workmen who do business promptly and charge reasonable prices.
PERSONAL:—DeWitt C. Lawrence Esq., of the Los Angeles Star, accompanied by Mr Denker, of the U.S. Hotel, paid us a visit last Saturday.
H. C. Austin Esq., of the Express, came down from Los Angeles last evening.
ARRIL FOOL—The usual joking was indulged in last Monday. A healthy looking money purse was found several times on the sidewalk, but to the credit of our people be it recorded that nobody carried it away—for the same reason that red-hot stoves are usually exempt from larceny.
THE PIANO RAFFLE.—We are glad to learn from the Star that the tickets are selling rapidly for the raffle of the splendid Arion Piano, and that the exhibition and raffle will take place soon. Tickets may be bad at Clark's bookstore.
THE WELL AT SAVANNAH.—The contract for boring an artesion well at Savannah has been taken by Bemia & Adams and will be commenced as soon as one or two prior jobs can be disposed of.
PICNIC AT THE LANDING.—The Picnic at the Landing last Sunday, gotten up by Messrs Evers & Reickmann was a very pleasant affair and heartily enjoyed by those who attended.
WHO IS HELEN BLAZES?—We heard her name called last Monday by a man who had been deceived by some misrepresentation connected with the celebration of the 1st of April.
