Different kinds of Engraving.
"Line" engraving is of the highest order. Great engravings are done in "line"—simply straight lines. Next comes "line" and "stipple." "Stipple" means dots—small dots like this... These small dots are used to lighten up the high parts of the face or drapery. It is very hard to engrave a face in lines simply, and only master engravers have ever undertaken it. The masters understand and practice both "line" and "stipple." In 1700 Claude Mellan engraved a full head of Christ with one unbroken line. The line commenced at the apex of the picture. Mezzotint engravings are produced thus: The steel or copper is made rough like fine sand-paper. To produce soft effects this rough surface is scraped off. If you want a white place or "high light" in your engraving, scrape the surface smooth then the ink will not touch it. If you want faint color, scrape off a little. Such engravings look like lithographs. Etching is adapted to homely and familiar sketches. Almost all the great painters are etchers. Etching is done thus: The copper or steel plate is beaten and covered with black varnish. The engraver scratches off this varnish with sharp needles, working on the surface as he would on paper with a pencil. Nitric acid is then poured over the plate, and it cuts away at the steel and copper wherever the needle has scraped off the varnish. When the varnish is removed with spirits of turpentine; the engraving is seen in sunken lines on the plate.

Why is a hen immortal? Her son never sets. Why have chickens no hope in the future? They have their next world (necks twirled) in this. Why is a hen on a fence like a cent? Head on one side—tail on the other. Why don't hens lay at night? Then they are roosters. Why is the first chicken of a brood like the mainmast of a ship? A little forward of the main hatch. Why is a chicken just hatched like a cow's tail? Never seen before. Why should not a chicken cross the road? It would be a fowl proceeding. It a ship captain had no eggs, what would he do? Lay to (two). And to conclude, a hen is a poor economist, because for every grain she gives a peck.
Gonsolidation of the Territories.—Delegata Chaffee, of Colorado Territory, is working busily in Washington to gain support for his plan of consolidating the Territories. The plan is to unite two adjoining Territories where the population of both will suffice for a State Government, and otherwise to join the Territory to its contiguous State. He proposes to unite Colorado with Wyoming; Utah with Nevada; Washington with Oregon, and Arizona with California. It is proposed to leave New Mexico as a Territory, and to make Alaska a Province.
A solemnism in grammar rhetoric is a violation of the idiomatic rules of grammar or construction in writing or speaking a language. The word is derived from Soli, a town of Cicilia said to have been founded by Solon and people by the Athenians, who were afterward charged with corrupting the language of the parent State. Solemnism differs from barbarism, in that the latter is applied to the erroneous use of single words.
"Greenland's icy mountains," about which the churches so often sing, are far from being the abodes of heathenism. About half the population of Greenland belong to the Lutheran communion, and the whole
"Greenland's icy mountains," about which the churches so often sing, are far from being the abodes of heathenism. About half the population of Greenland belong to the Lutheran communion, and the whole country is well supplied with churches, pastors and catechists. The salaries of clergyman range from $800 to $1,400, which is better then the average in this country.
The Newspapers of the World—Mr. Hatin the historian of the press in France, estimates the total number of newspapers in the world at 12,500, and the average number of sheets issued daily 12,000,000. Europe has about 7,000 journals, America 5,000 and the remainder are divided between Asia, Australia, Africa and other outlying regions on the outskirts of civilization.
If a man will only start with a fixed and honorable purpose in life, and strictly and persistently attempt to carry it out to the best of his ability, undismayed by failure or delay, the time may be long in coming, but come it will, when that purpose will be achieved.
Col. H. D Cook, of Normal, Ill., has patented an iron shingle roof. The shingles are about six by thirteen inches, lap each other so as to insure a water-proof roof, and are fastened by headless nails. The patent is said to be less expensive than slate.
The New York Tribune says: "The total national debt is now but a fraction over twenty-one hundred millions, having been diminished by $275,000,000 since General Grant's accession to the Presidency."
