Southern California. SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1872 The Tobacco Antidote. "WITHOUT MONEY AND WITHOUT PRICE." We see the thousands whose wills are paralyzed by tobacco, who struggle to be free but give up in despair. They need an antidote for an insatiable appetite. To such as are utterly stupefied by the drug, and such as revel in saliva and smoke—glorying in their shame—we make no appeal, but to such as "groan being in bondage," Here is our antidote, friend. Try it. We ask nothing for it. 1. Make the most of your will. Drop tobacco and resolve never to use it again in any form. 2. Go to an apothecary and buy ten cents' worth of gentian root coarsely ground. 3. Take as much of it astar each meal, or oftener, as amounts to a common quid of "fine-cut" or "ca-vendish." 4. Chew it well and swallow all the saliva. 5. Continue this a few weeks, and you will come off conqueror. Then thank God for freedom. REASONS. 1. Gentian root is a tonic, bitter in taste, and will do much to neutralize and allay your thirst for tobacco. 2. Gentian root is a nervine. It will brace up your relaxed nerver, and save you from the "awful gone-ness" under which you agonize. 3. Gentian, for a short time, is an innocent substitute for the quid or pipe. It employs the mouth, beguiles attention, and gives a helping hand to a drowning man. 1. Gentian root is a tonic, bitter in taste, and will do much to neutralize and allay your thirst for tobacco. 2. In a recent article, Caleb Cushing states the remarkable fact that England was only conquered by the United States; "It is notable that no true English army ever surrendered itself to a foreign enemy except in the United States, but that twice in the war of the Revolution, and once in the second war, an English general capitulated on the field of battle, and surrendered his force to the arms of the United States. There is no parallel to this series of events in all the numerous military operations of England, in Europe, Asia, and Africa, from the time of William the Norman to Victoria." Count Mitkiewicz one of the Grand Duke Alexis' party, who arrived the day before yesterday on a short vii it to the Comstock range, is responsible for the following toot: Whether original with him or not, it is good: "Here's to the American Eagle and the Russian Bear, one wears feathers and the other hair; one is here and the other there, but together they make a jolly good pair." — Gold Hill News. A young lady who has been taking quinine in large quantities became so impregnated with iron that one cold evening, when her lover kissed her at the door, he had the same experience that small boys do who approach their mouths to lamp posts, and, before he could separate his lips from here, was caught by his ought to be mother-in-law. Moral—don't take quinine. There is a very stout old lady who rides a good deal in the Cincinnati street cars, and for whom, no matter how crowded they may be, the passengers always find a seat. Her persuasiveness never fails. Her method is to bustle in and prepare to sit down on the passengers' laps. The hint is enough. The Pay of Governors. — New Hampshire and Rhode Island pay There is a very stout old lady who rides a good deal in the Cincinnati street cars, and for whom, no matter how crowded they may be, the passengers always find a seat. The Pay of Governors.—New Hampshire and Rhode Island pay their Governors $1,000 each; Connecticut, $1,100; Delaware, $1,333 Illinois, $1,500; New York, Texas and Louisiana, $4,000 each; Pennsylvania, $5,000, and California, $7,000. Another link in Mr. Darwin's chain of evidence is supplied by the report that during the recent epidemic in Brazil the monkeys there were as prone to take the disease as were the human residents. Other animals were exempt from contagion. The debts of California has with in the last four years been reduced from $5,164,000 to $3,462,000. The annual receipts of the State are about $550,000 more than the expenditures. A New Jersey woman who was deaf and dumb when she was married has recently given birth to a child, and can now both bear and speak. The child, however is deaf and dumb. Mrs. Partington tells of a minister who had served the Lord for thirty years; first as a circus rider, then as a locust preacher, and last as an exhunter. A deaf and dumb convention was held at Boston recently. Three hundred people were present, and materially edited each other. General Merchandise. THE OLDEST ESTABLISHED BUSINESS HOUSE IN ANAHEIM.
