SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1872 Telling Stories. A few years ago a society was formed in New York for the suppression of story-tellers. Artemus Ward, Dan Bryant, Billy Florence, and men of that ilk constituted the active members. Their plan was when a man commenced a story, to get up and saunter away on at a time, leaving the unhappy man to complete his narration to the chair and other furniture. One day Dan Bryant so far forgot himself as to begin a story, forcibly brought to his remembrance by some incident of the occasion. Ward got up and sauntered out, whistling a melancholy tune. One by one the remainder followed suit, with troubled looks and a sad shake of the head, sometimes sighting deeply. By the time Dan had reached the middle of his story he was alone. As the last man passed out, Dan turned to the picture of George Washington hanging on the wall, and remarking, 'Here, old fellow, you've got to hear the rest of this story; I'd like to see you get down and walk off on your ear,' completed his narrative; the Father of his Country and Governor Poy of Indiana, listened to him with that calm benignity so characteristic of him. It is needless to say, the story extinguishers, who were listening just outside, enjoyed this part of the yarn, at least. Speaking of George Washington, he couldn't tell a story, and readily acknowledged it. He told his father he couldn't when a boy, although as things then looked a story would have let him out. It is a pity that there are not more Father of his Country and Governor Poy of Indiana, listened to him with that calm benignity so characteristic of him. It is needless to say, the story extinguishers, who were listening just outside, enjoyed this part of the yarn, at least. Speaking of George Washington, he couldn't tell a story, and readily acknowledged it. He told his father he couldn't when a boy, although as things then looked a story would have let him out. It is a pity that there are not more people to say with Washington, I cannot tell a story, and never try it. Richmond.—The Richmond of today is a bright, bristling busy city of fifty thousand inhabitants. The immense water-power of James River turns a mass of machinery devoted to nearly every branch of industry, and furnishing employment to thousands. Its streets are clean and spacious, its public buildings attractive, its people industrious, its wealth of a permanent, substantial character and there is no reason why Richmond should not advance with gigantic strides towards material prosperity. Its growth of late years has been rapid. In 1810 the population was 9,000; in 1820, 12,000; in 1830, 16,000; in 1840, 20,000; in 1850, 27,000; in 1860, 38,000; and in 1870, 51,000, showing a healthy rate of increase from the first. Richmond is full of history, full of that which is of interest to the visitor: Having been the capital of the Confederacy for four bloody years, it abounds with historic memories, and the tourist will find himself amply repaid for his visit here.—Cor. Cincinnati Commercial. To make bread.—Take an earthy en vessel larger at the top than at the bottom, put in one pint of warm water, one and a half pounds of flour, and a half pint of malt yeast; mix well together and set away in a warm place until it rises and falls again, which will be in from three to five hours. Then put in two large spoonfuls of salt into two quarts of water and mix with the above rising; then put in about nine pounds of flour and work it well; let it rise until night; then make it into loaves New and runny flour requires one-fourth more salt than old and dry flour. Bake as soon as light. The successful photographer's appeal to the baby. "Hi yi! [Begin to dance]. Howdy dowdy! Ding-a-ling-ling! Whoope! [Throwing up arms]. You! You! You! Bah-ah-bah!" The London crystal palace aquarium is 400 feet long and 70 feet broad, and the total capacity of all the tanks is 200,000 gallons of water, weighing a million pounds. Of sea anemones alone there are already in the aquarium about 3000 specimens. These flower-like animals, being deprived in their captivity of the ocean currents which bring them their food, have to be fed at intervals each having given to it a morsel of food suited to its size. It is ascertained that the currency, greenbacks, and bonds lost, amounting it is known to several millions of dollars, will more than pay the cost of engraving and printing the various kinds of currency, etc., that have been issued from time to time.
