SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN. SATURDAY, JANUARY 20, 1872 CHAS. A. GARDNER...Ed'r Pep'n' Notice J. C Hill Jr. is hereby authorized to receive subscriptions for the Southern Californian Effect of Rain It is a pleasure to make a trip to Los Angeles now and see how bright and happy the country looks after the rain. We did not realize its full effect until we found our twenty dollars charger nearly stuck in the mud on the Coyote Stats, and we quietly tucked our pantaloons inside our boot legs, to be ready to wade out and carry the horse to dry land. Arrived at the Gertrudes ranch, we found the high plain being ploughed up, for the first time. Dr. Fulton informs us that he finds the soil on this plain, ten feet deep, an astonishing depth for soil on high ground. It is perfectly mellow after penetrating the hard crust that has been formed by the tramping of animals upon the surface during an unknown period of time. This crust is about a foot thick, after which a stick may easily be poked down several feet. We were surprised at the business appearance of Gallatin. Instead of the traditional country store, we found there at the establishment of W. W. Standiter &. NEWS ITEMS Peninsula Coast. Small town in immense New York. A Grand Lodge of Manitoba Utah was organized on the 6th. A street railroad company been organized at Salt Lake City. A concurrent resolution introduced providing for a mail from Nov. 1, until May. A bill has been passed prevent the destruction of birds. The telegraph says actions have been made for a mail. A bill is introduced for creation of Santa Barbara county creation of the new county territory. An application for citizen Utah, has been denied on the basis that applicant was a polyester. The Guardian complains short weights among its members and then again it complains long waits—for a railroad. A bill passed the Seat to pay Grand Jurors in Los Angeles county $2 per day and 25 mileage. The Figaro man (bae says "parters with monograms are now worn by pretty girls are rather a novelty yet, but It is perfectly mellow after penetrating the hard crust that has been formed by the tramping of animals upon the surface during an unknown period of time. This crust is about a foot thick, after which a stick may easily be poked down several feet. We were surprised at the business appearance of Gallatin. Instead of the traditional country store, we found there at the establishment of W. W. Standiter & Co., something more resembling the wholesale store of a city, with its counting house, bookkeeper and salesmen, and all crowded with business. Messrs Frankel Bros have also a large and well stocked store. Gallatin has a fine two story school house, with grammar and primary school, and an average attendance of 90 scholars. There is also a college two miles West which we did not have time visit. Gallatin is a thriving, busy town, and the center of a large and wealthy settlement At Los Angeles we found matters vastly improved by the wet season. We enjoyed a brief but very pleasant visit with many kind and genial friends, visited the skating rink and other places of interest, [we refer to the bank] were treated well and treated often, and all together we had a good time and shall go there again. Business Activity Our town has regained much of its old time business vigor since the advent of a better season. The streets are crowded with teams, the merchants are busy, and farmers are buying all the seed and agricultural tools to be had. Another store has just been opened and still another will commence operations soon. A new restaurant will be opened before long, and it is expected that a furniture factory and store will soon be built on Los Angeles street. The elegant new Anaheim Hotel, more fully noticed herefore, will be opened next Saturday by Mr. Bremmerman, and make additional accommodation for the wants of travellers. The vineyards have nearly all been pruned ground. A bill passed the Seat to pay Grand Jurors in Los County $2 per day and 25 mileage. The Figaro man (bays says "parters with monograms are now worn by pretty girls are rather a novelty yet, but you to see more of them." Nice specimens of spool almost daily brought in by P Gurrier. We hope he will bed from whence it comes. The Wine Dealers' of San Francisco is to be eased and issued weekly, instead of ty, as at present. The Atlantic telegra The Buena Vista Vinicultural Association, which owns at Sonoma one of the largest vineyards in the State, and report says it is the largest in the world, made about 150,000 gallons of wine in 1871, and not 15,000 as stated by a typographical error in our last issue. We believe this is the largest amount made from any one vineyard in the State; several other persons and associations have made more wine, but not from grapes of their own raising. — Wine Dealers' Gazette. Haven't we some vineyards in this vicinity that beat that? How about Lake Vineyard and Cascamento? Another will commence operations soon. A new restaurant will be opened before long, and it is expected that a furniture factory and store will soon be built on Los Angeles street. The elegant new Anabeim Hotel, more fully noticed herefore, will be opened next Saturday by Mr. Brommerman, and make additional accommodation for the wants of travellers. The vineyards have nearly all been pruned, and look trim and neat. Fields of grain are gradually spreading over all the plain outside the city, looking green, bright and cheerful. Many pieces of land are being sold every week, to actual settlers, and population is steadily increasing. A bright and prosperous future is before Anaheim, and she will doubtless make more rapid and permanent improvement in the next two years than any other town in the State. The Atlantic telegraph is to be laid to New York on James M. Smith he elected Governor of Georgia succeed Bullock, absconded. This amendment shall not take effect until after the fourth of March, 1873. Some of the New York legislators, Republicans as well as Democrats, are probably shaking in their boots over the report that Mr. Tweed has a little book, in which he has kept a record of his transactions in legislators—the names, date of purchase and sums paid, and that he will publish it if "pushed."—Ex. SAN DIEGO, Jan. 13.—The following dispatch was sent to the Union, from a reliable source: "San Francisco, Jan. 12—Dferences among the Texas Pacific managers arranged. Roberts will retire from the Presidency. Scott and associates will control. The gauge is three feet. Necessary legislation is promised in Texas. Work will be commenced immediately thereafter, and pushed with great energy."—News. The following brief obiuary notice of the late James Fisk Jr., is from the San Francisco Bulletin: Colonel Jim Fisk was a man of more than ordinary nerve, and of unbounded impudence. Ever since his New England tour with his magnificent peddling establishment, it has been his delight to perform some antic so bold, unexpected and unprecedented that the world would gape with astonishment. His financial and stock jobbing schemes, his Erie manipulation, his dinners, his threat, his steambeats his elbowing of reception committees to one side, and his hundred other bold or cheeky eccentricities have for years furnished an almost constant sensation. His tragic end creates the greatest sensation of all, and seems singularly in accord with his life, for he died as he lived—the centre of the sensation of the hour. FRESH ALFALFA SEED Always On Hand.
