Novel Ceremony—The ceremony of choosing compadres and comadres for the coming year, a custom peculiar to the people of Spain and Mexico, is to be performed upon the advent of the New Year, by some of the ladies of this city. The custom is an old one, and its origin dates back many years. The manner of its performance is as follows: The names of ladies and gentlemen known to be mutually acquainted are written upon slips of paper and deposited in hats, the name of a lady being drawn simultaneously from one hat with that of a gentle man from another, the two whose names are thus drawn to be compadres and comadres to each other for the year. The obligations incurred towards each other by the relationship are very simple. The gentleman is to be the escort of the lady on any and every occasion that she may desire; and she in turn must consider herself engaged for any and every entertainment which he may wish to attend. Of course, the relationship can be dissolved by mutual consent, either temporarily or permanently, during the period for which the agreement is made. The custom is an agreeable one in this particular, that it insures both lady and gentleman an escort or companion, thus doing away with the disagreeable incidents which sometimes occur through not having partners for an entertainment. And it also secures to the lady having a compadre the positive certainty of having some one to dance with at every hall.—San Diego Union.

Commenced.—The survey of the San Diego and Los Angeles railroad route was commenced yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, the first stake being driven in Old Town at that hour. The surveying party consists of Chas. J. Fox, Chief Engineer, Messrs. Knox & Rumble, Assistants, and eight other men, who do duty as flagmen, etc. The following is the general line of the route, which will be adhered to as nearly as possible: Commencing at Old San Diego and running towards Pawil, from thence to San Luis Rey, then thro'h the Santa Margarita and San Juan Capistrano valleys to Anaheim, and finally terminating at Los Angeles. From Anaheim to San Bernardino, the route for a branch road, will also be surveyed. The party is expected to remain in the field for a month or six weeks.—San Diego Union.
THE CANNON BALL TREE.—Among the plants of Guinea one of the most curious is the cannon ball tree. It grows to the height of sixty feet, and its flowers are remarkable for beauty and fragrance, and contradictory qualities. Its blossoms are of a delicious crimson, appearing in large bunches and exhaling a rich perfume. The fruit resembles large cannon balls; hence the name. However, some say it is so called because of the noise which it makes in bursting. From the shell domestic utensils are made, and the contents contain several kinds of acids, besides sugar and gum, and furnish materials for making an excellent drink in sickness. But, singular as it may appear, this pulp, when in a perfectly ripe state, is very silky, and the odor from it is exceedingly unpleasant.
SEEDS — Which seeds are the longest lived is a question of some scientific interest. Maize has been known to grow when thirty years old; rye at forty years; and kidney beans at one hundred years. Some raspberry plants were raised in England from seeds taken from the stomach of an exhumed Roman With the same body were found coins showing that he must have been buried about seventeen hundred years previously! Seeds — Which seeds are the longest lived is a question of some scientific interest. Maize has been known to grow when thirty years old: rye at forty years, and kidney beans at one hundred years. Some raspberry plants were raised in England from seeds taken from the stomach of an exhumed Roman With the same body were found coins showing that he must have been buried about seventeen hundred years previously! Had this individual extended his last meal a little more widely in the botanical direction, he might have added to our knowledge of the longevity of seeds considerably — San Diego Union.
Small-Pox by Mail — A young lady now ill with small-pox in this city recently received a letter from a sister in Pittsburg, who wrote that she was then sick with the small-pox. Exactly eleven days after the letter was received the young lady who received it was taken with the disease. She was not exposed to it in any other way, and there seems to be no doubt the contagion was communicated by the letter. — Wheeling Intelligencer.
A Connecticut schoolboy stated that the "father of his country" was Brigham Young.
