SOUTHERN CALIFORNIAN. SATURDAY DECEMBER 30, 1871 How to Grow the Quince. A correspondent writes: "I occasionally read that to grow the quince and cause it to bear good crops, it should be pruned to one single stem, and carefully thinned in the pruning of the top. Now, such practice has, in the course of my observation, resulted, nine times out of ten, in a complete failure, the borer destroying ere the cultivator saw the single trunk, or blight gave its death blow. The quince being naturally a bush, if so grown and permitted to throw up three or four stems, crooked and irregular, with only a taking out or shortening occasionally of cross shoots, for the first two or three years it bears good crops and needs no culture after once established, except to permit the grass or weeds that surround it to remain and decay, and to dress annually, lightly, with a quantity of salt. The twig blight and the stem blight are both enemies of the quince; but no remedy have I ever found except my knife, with which I cut away the diseased parts as soon as seen. I have grown quinces for a crop over thirty years, and was bred to their management in my father's grounds, and I always have good results in the bush form, and fatal results, after a few years, when the grower attempted the single tree style." Mark Twain has taken a "new departure" in the lecture business. At Philadelphia the other evening, he introduced himself to the audience in this way: "I ask leave to introduce to you the lecturer of the evening, Mr. Clemens, otherwise 'Mark Twain,' a gentleman whose great learning, whose accuracy of language, whose devotion to science, whose veneration for the truth, and infelicitous harmonies are equal to his high moral character and the majesty of his benign presence. I refer in the vague general terms to myself. It is not the parture” in the lecture business, At Philadelphia the other evening, he introduced himself to the audience in this way: “I ask leave to introduce to you the lecturer of the evening, Mr. Clemens, otherwise ‘Mark Twain,’ a gentleman whose great learning, whose accuracy of language, whose devotion to science, whose veneration for the truth and infelicitous harmonies are equal to his high moral character and the majesty of his benign presence. I refer in the vague general terms to myself. It is not the custom here, I believe, for lecturers to introduce themselves to the audience. I thought, perhaps, it would be better for me to do this myself, and then I could get in all the facts. A good connubial story is related of Horace Greeley. It is said that he once wrote to a female contributor to his paper, requesting her not to send any more poetry. She studied the chirographic wonder long and vainly, but at last called in her friends who pronounced it an offer of marriage. It was accepted as such, and as the surprised editor was to much of a philosopher to make a disturbance, he agreed and they were married. Eggology.—There is a vast difference in the flavor of eggs. Hens fed on clean, sound grain, and kept on a clean grass run, give much finer flavored eggs than hens do that have access to stables and manure heaps, and eat all kinds of filthy food.
