Delivered at the installation of the officers of Anaheim Lodge, No. 207, F. & A. M., Dec. 27, 1871: "Brother Reiser, you have been elected by your brethren of Anaheim Lodge to a seat in the Oriental Chair of King Solomon. It was not in their power to have conferred upon you a more distinguished mark of their favor and respect, realizing, as we do, that you understand well the duties and obligations of Masonry, and that you yield a ready obedience thereto. Some months ago, in conversation with a brother of El Monte Lodge, he informed me that he became acquainted with you under strange circumstances. A stranger, driving a team past his door, stopped a moment to enquire the way and after getting the desired information passed on; but in a few moments, in crossing a gulch fell from his wagon and was fatally injured. A crowd soon gathered around the injured man, with proffers of assistance. He inquired if there was a Mason present; the El Monte brother made himself known as such; he then requested that a messenger be despatched with all haste to Anaheim for Theodore Reiser. That message was delivered, you met your dying friend and brother, received and treasured up his last re- [COMMUNICATE] EDITOR SOUTHERN Brig William H. A crowd soon gathered around the injured man, with proffers of assistance. He inquired if there was a Mason present; the El Monte brother made himself known as such; he then requested that a messenger be despatched with all haste to Anaheim for Theodore Reiser. That message was delivered, you met your dying friend and brother, received and treasured up his last requests and are today faithfully fulfilling your trust. When I came into the country nearly four years ago, Brother Metz, Brother Kuchel and yourself were all the Masons in Anaheim or its vicinity. Eighteen months ago Brother Metz called you to his dying couch, entrusting you with his last requests. Brother Kuchel made you his confidant and counsellor in his business troubles, a knowledge of which may enable you to render his family material assistance in the final winding up of his affairs. But in all this you have done no more than your duty; but you have done your whole duty, and he who does his whole duty does well. It is the mission of Masonry to do good, free from all mercenary considerations. The applicant for the favors of Masonry solemnly declares that his only desire is to improve himself in knowledge and become servicable to his fellow man. There has never been so fine a tribute paid to Masonry in all the history of Masonry for man as the selecting of Masons of a Joint High Commission to arrange the preliminaries for the final settlement of a difficulty that a few months ago bid fair to involve two of the most powerful nations of the earth in a war, the baneful effects of which would have affected the whole human race, two nations having a common origin, speaking the same language and each in the van of progress and civilization, the United States and Great Britain. Earl de Gray, the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England, was placed at the head of this commission on the part of that Government. He commenced discharging his trust by a frank and manly acknowledgement that his Government had perpetrated, a great wrong on the Government of the United States (one of the largest win tries), and having visited portion of the Western portion of the Western portions of these countries populated that feeble more than a few acres fore have to exert theirience to make this lifeative to its utmost close mate being in close sway we may derive much experience. Heretofore all the vines have been five feet apart each way would call quadrilateral all the land to the other crop, requiring no expense, without station therefor than contrary in the country the vines are planted allel rows in the follow two rows, three feet away vines set three feet farrows; then an interval feet vacant space is left other rows like the through the vineyard intervals between their crops of cereals. it is evident that the nu a little less; but a trifle compared with the ben from. Thus, planting each way it needs two rows; in planting three way in parallel rows, feet between, it needs a reference of four feet, or to compensate for what following: 1st. The ten feet bevated for cereals, the answers for the vines—crop. The crop can be the prejudice of the planted sufficiently earthe ground before they attained one-half their 2d. Earl de Gray, the Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of England, was placed at the head of this commission on the part of that Government. He commenced discharging his trust by a frank and manly acknowledgement that his Government had perpetrated a great wrong on the Government of the United States, promising full and ample restitution. Not only was this joint high commission Masons, but those to whom were referred matters in controversy were also Masons. The Prussian Emperor to whom was referred the San Juan Boundary trouble on our coast, is a Mason, and so I believe is the King of Italy, the President of the Swiss Confederation and the Emperor of Brazil. And why is it that Masons are sought to settle matters of such momentous import? It is because nations are learning to be just because Masonry teaches justice, and because Masons are supposed to practice what they teach. The entered apprentice, when placed in position to commence erecting his Masonic edifice, is told that he stands there a just and upright Mason, and is solemnly charged to ever walk and act, as such justice is one of the four cardinal virtues of Masonry, symbolized on our charts by a hoodwinked virgin, holding a balance in her hand, a virgin symbolizing purity and truth, blind, as not being able to distinguish between a peasant and king, a balance in her hand, to show justice at an exact equipoise. Where is language to be found to express our admiration of an institution the teachings of which prompt men to go on call to receive and treasure up and execute with his long fidelity, the last requests of a dying friend, or 1st. The undersigned offer for sale the right to use the CELEBRATED PLIMPTON ROLLER SKATE, In any of the following towns, viz: Anaheim, Wilmington, Los Nietos and El Monte. Roller skating is the most successful and popular amusement ever introduced on the Pacific Coast, scarcely a town of any importance can be found without its 'Rink.' Any party looking for a light, agreeable and profitable business can find it by applying to The ten feet between being cultivated for cereals, the same cultivation powers for the vines—clear benefit—the crop can never interfere to prejudice of the vines. When planted sufficiently early it will be off ground before the grapes will have matured one-half their maturity. Vines planted thus need no irrigation, however small the rain-fall in the winter or Spring, for the reason that ramification of the vines expands and the branches soon intertwining each other, keep the lands in the center in a sufficient state of moisture, admitting sufficient of the heat of sun to bring the grapes to a perfect purity. For the reason above stated the labor necessary in the center or middle of the rows is the pulling and digging out of the weeds and grasses in the Spring, and once in the early summer. To save land for orchards there intermixed in said rows, and at a distance of about 40 feet, planted all varieties of fruit trees, which are kept close below until the body of the tree reached some 10 feet in height before ramifications are allowed to expand, preserving the vines from supernous shade. Thus sir, that in those countries, an industry joined to their long experience, a man with ten acres of land reports his family, enjoys his wine and besides some little for market. Berries, olives, walnuts, oranges all large kinds of trees which would be superfinous shade to the vines are naturally planted on the edges around land. VICKS’ FLORAL GUIDE. For 1872.
