ANAHEIM GAZETTE. SATURDAY NOVEMBER 4, 1871 Thoughts about Railroad. Railroad projects are being broached all around us; neighboring towns and counties are agitating the question earnestly; and it is quite probable, in view of the great need for such improvements to open up and develop the resources of our vast agricultural regions, that some plan will be submitted to the next Legislature for a general system of railroad building throughout the southern counties. Los Angeles county, as the Empire County of southern California, as the center of wealth, population, arable extent and commercial importance, will be sure to be foremost in consideration in these plans, and Anaheim, occupying as she does the position of a business center for all the southern part of this large county, with her present recognized importance and her hopes of still greater consequence in the future, should not be behindhand in putting in her claims for consideration in these calculations. The "slate" will be made up and we may be left out in the cold if we do not come forward and make ourselves heard in the matter. As an editor, whose time and attention are due to all business of public welfare, we deem it our duty to call attention to these facts, and we suggest that a public meeting be held at Anaheim on Saturday 18th inst., at noon, for the purpose of consulting together upon this important matter, and that at the same time the citizens of neighboring communities, as the Santa Ana country, Monte. San Gabriel, San Jose, Gallatin, Compton and Wilmington, be invited to send three Delegates each to such meeting, and thus profit by that "multitude of counsels in which there is wisdom". The pressure of business duties has allowed us to consult with but very few of our citizens upon this matter, but the following named gentlemen to whom we have submitted the foregoing, fully concur, with us in our views upon the subject: A. LANGENBERGER, EDWARD EVEY, Starvation in San Joaquin Valley. Under this starling heading, the San Joaquin Republic gives an account of destitution and want which seems incredible in our own Golden State. It says that in that part of the valley lying west of the San Joaquin River from Grayson as far west as Moores Landing, the farmers have raised nothing for two seasons; that many families have lived for weeks on ground squirrels, and that such an article as bread has not been seen in their houses for many days. Other families have subsisted almost wholly on boiled barley. This is a sad story, and the sufferers should be relieved from those large towns which are the outlets of the trade of the valley. BEET SUGAR.—We have been favored by Mr. John W. Clark, with a very sweet item for this issue, which we regard as appropriate matter for our inside. It is a sample of the best sugar made at Alvarado, and is beautiful, clear and good tasting sugar. The manufacture of this article has proven very profitable to the Alvarado Company and would doubtless make a most successful business here, whenever capitalists chose to invest money enough to put up the machinery. The cost of starting the refinery at Alvarado was, we believe' about $150,000. The San Francisco Figaro contains a capital hit at the Los Angeles massacre by a fictious account of a similar affair at Lo Sang Eles in the South of China where a similar scene is supposed to have been enacted, reversing of course the nationalities of the partici- moon, for the purpose of consulting together upon this important matter, and that at the same time the citizens of neighboring communities, as the Santa Ana country, Monte. LANGENBERGER, EDWARD EVEY, JOHN W. CLARK, JOHN FISCHER. PHIL. DAVIS. RICHARD HEIMANN, M. CALISHER, Market Report. We are indebted to Littlefield, Webb & Co., Commission Merchants of San Francisco, for the following report: San Francisco Oct. 26th; Flour 500 to 800 per bbl, Rye 230 to 237½ per cwt, Barley 187½ to 205, Corn 215 to 220, Bayou beans 325 to 350, Castor beans 400 to 450, Mustard seed white 350 to 450, brown 550 to 600 dark brown 400 to 500, Potatoes 70e to 125 Sweet do 125 to 150, Butter 25 to 55, Eggs 37½ to 65 Bacon 12½ to 16½ Wool burry and coarse 15 to 24 fall clip choice 25 to 28 extra choice 29 to 32 Wine (white and red, casks returnable) vintage of 1870. 15 to 15 Los Angeles 20 to 25 Anaheim 25 to 28 Hay $17 to $23. Supervisors.—The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Supervisors is to be held on Monday 6th inst. The Artesian Well.—This enterprise which Mr. Spurgeon is pushing so manfully forward at Santa Ana is giving good promise of a speedy and successful result. On Tuesday last a column of sand 60 feet in height was forced up into the pipe and the fact is evidence of a tremendous pressure down below there somewhere which it is hoped, is the looked for stream that shall be found when the sand is removed. Mr. Spurgeon deserves great credit for his enterprise and perseverance in the matter. Such men as he are valuable to the country, and we wish him unbounded success. If you want a dress that will fit and put up the machinery, The cost of starting the refinery at Alvarado was, we believe' about $150,000. The San Francisco Figaro contains a capital hit at the Los Angeles massacre by a fictitious account of a similar affair at Lo Sang Eles in the South of China where a similar scene is supposed to have been enacted, reversing of course the nationalities of the participants. And additional force is given to the allegory by calling loudly upon our government to demand prompt reparation for the outrage and, if necessary, declare war against China. A Prize.—Mr. P./A Clark drew $5 on ticket 22,711 in the Folsom Lottery. We are not informed as to what he proposes to do with all the money, but hope he will spend it in Anaheim. New Comers.—Mr. Harris and Mr. Bohannon have just arrived, both we believe with families, to settle at Tustin city. Mr. Caldwell and family passed on Wednesday last, from Soda Ranch, Salinas Valley, to settle at Santa Ana. Mr. Converse Howe and family from Alameda county locates at Westminster, as also Mr. Howe Sr. with family. A number of families have stopped at Anaheim whose names we have not learned. Welcome to them all. Riverside.—This new settlement on the Santa Ana River, 12 miles south west of San Bernardino, contains, according to the Guardian 38 families and 17 unmarried men, all of whom have lands selected and are preparing to put in crops this fall. The Guardian calls for 17 unmarried women to go for these bachelors. Shooting Accident.—Mr. Converse Howe who arrived here on Saturday last from Alameda county, and who has located in the Westminster colony, had the misfortune to shoot himself in the right arm near the shoulder while pulling a shot gun out of a wagon on the way down, at Brown's station, 10 miles beyond Santa Barbara. The accident happened on the 25th ult. and the wound, which is only a flesh one, is rapidly recovering, obliging Mr. H. how- of a tremendous pressure down below there somewhere which it is hoped, is the looked for stream that shall be found when the sand is removed, Mr. Spurgeon deserves great credit for his enterprise and perseverance in the matter. Such men as he are valuable to the country, and we wish him unbounded success. If you want a dress that will fit and be fashionably cut and well made, call on Mrs. S. A. Hawkins, Gazette building, who will not only ensure all these conditions, but will make only reasonable charges for the same. FIREMEN!—Remember the monthly meeting of the company on Monday evening next. MANUFACTURES AT WESTMINSTER.—We have the pleasure to record the opening of a new era in the history of Westminster, the commencement of manufacture, of home industry and all the advantages that follow in its wake Mr. Johnson of the colony, has just completed a two horse wagon, which has been ironed at Anaheim, there being as yet no blacksmith shop, at the colony. We congratulate our friends upon having taken an important step in progress and prosperity. Freight List. Freight Ex California October 31st, 1871.
